So I am going back to New York on holiday and we want to make a few day trips. Already sorted out trains/buses for Philly and Atlantic City but I am having problems with Long Island.

I would love to go to one omf these typcial cute looking towns like you see on TV which is near the beach and has some cool shops....but the island is sooooo big and I have no idea which place to choose.

Mountuak has been ruled out as it takes to long with the train to reach. Bellport and Oyster bay look insteresting but I thought I would ask here first to see if you guys have some insider tips!

We looked at joining a tour but it costs an awful lot for one day and we don't want to be stuck doing the tour...we are people who like to wander and discover for ourselves.

Thanks for any input you guys have!

I don't know where to recommend. I've only been to NYC once and I loved it, but spent most of my time in Manhattan.

That is what we did last time...so we really want to do some day trips this time.

I think I am just gonna open google maps, close my eyes and point. :giggle:

Don't know about the area but I have found that a lot of these places have their own webpages. Close your eyes and point and then check out if they have a webpage you like the look of

I found a whole webpage full of links to many of the places. However those webpages are not exactly infomative...lack of photos for one....

Will do some more research over the weekend.

The only time I've been to Long Island, I had the opportunity to take the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road). A business colleague drove me to a customer meeting in Long Island and then dropped me off at the train station so I could get back into Manhattan. I was totally blown away when I realized that the name of the station was "Hicksville". Oh my!

I think that the Hamptons are on Long Island. Take a look at the Visitor's Bureau for the Hamptons -- http://www.hamptonsvisitorscouncil.com/

Oooh -- found this site -- http://long-island.newsday.com/things-to-do -- has links to museums, concerts, theater, beaches, etc.

Wow - just saw this. I grew up in Deer Park, Long Island - why are you going there?? I would say go some place close to Jones Beach. It is suburbia and I can't tell you a place to visit....outside of Montauk...it is good for Pizza - New York style.

Thank you Elsi. I found the LIRR page and that was what made choosing where to go even more difficult. Too many choice!

@Books - We are in NYC and want to do a day trip to Long Island. Would like to see the beach but really want to experience the kind of picture we see over here on TV :). I guess we are looking for a town/place we can spend a day at looking around, shopping and having something good to eat.

I hoped that some of you guys Stateside may have some ideas but it seems you are all more jealous :)
