I feel that hosts should be allowed to set up whatever rules they feel like, and it goes without saying that if it's some crazy rules they just won't see the participation they want. Having participated in many swaps, I'd say what you end up with is pretty unpredictable. Or maybe I am just bad at strategy. I have stolen a book on 4th thinking that this popular book will be stolen and I will then get a chance to steal back the book I want, only to have the game ended unexpectedly with the last reveal. I have safely sat quietly a wishlist book through most of the game until the last few moments. Also, very often in games, I notice that some players will steal a book just to give the book holder some fun at playing in the game. Allow me to venture that, if a swap applies this rule, it should strongly encourage the participants to offer an alternate book if their books are not stolen. |

What I don't understand about this rule is why the first person? What about the 2nd, 3rd, 4th...person who reveal a book and don't end up playing again. What is so special about the first person? A swap is a game of chance. A game I have often played knowing that the chances of the book I end up with is going to be one I already read. However I still play because it is fun, we are a community and we care. We care so much about each other that I always getting offers of another book when I end up with something I already read. We are such a great community that fellow swap players have sent me something from my wishlist because I didn't need their reveal because I already had it on my bookshelf. But don't get me wrong! I don't go into a swap thinking I will get something I want because everyone here is so nice. I just wanted to point out how great everyone is....What I wanted to make a point of is that Swaps are a game of chance. The odds are sometimes not in your favour when you play but you win what you win because it is chance. You always win, even if you don't like what you win. Just because you are first on the list should you really get what you want? This rule is like saying a casino manager will give you back the money you spent betting in his place when you leave. It takes the fun and the point out of the game. Or maybe that is just the way I see it.... Whichever way...the PUF and Teen Swaps that I host will not be using this rule. I have never used it, haven't missed it and don't need it. Edited by Amberkatze, Nov 27 2009, 01:34 AM.

Because the first person has no choice but to reveal, the second and so one have the chance to steal that first book or reveal another one. So that's why, because the first person has no choices. |

WTH. I haven't been here for a few days and to my surprise I see people have gotten so angry just because I do not like this to me new rule? I am without words at the moment. trying to type for 5 minutes now but too worried to step on more toes. better just shut up or wait till I can find the words. |

Marlene - I don't think anyone is angry. It's a healthy discussion with differing opinions, but everyone has been extremely civil. I think we're all still friends! |

I thought that too. That was what I was trying for at least. Maybe it is just that I am so used to democracy I'd prefer to have a poll or at least some say in the matter. that is all. |

It's funny, I'm also a Yankee from New England, and every year there would be a big fight over this rule. Some people play that the first person gets whatever they want, no matter if they were stolen from or not. Some people play the first person gets the last steal if no one stole from them. Some folks just nix the rule all together. I don't think it matters. I'd just leave it up to the host to post at the beginning of the swap what their rule is. |

I agree with Amberkatz, the chance is part of what makes it fun. I feel like I always win, and have read and loved some books I never would have even heard of if it wasn't for you folks. |

I just got home to read this entire thread. I don't care if this particular rule is used or not. I'd just like to know before hand. It seems this topic has been discussed pretty fairly IMO. Which is good to see.

I agree with Cheesy. As long as the rules are stated up-front, then the players have the chance to opt-out if they don't like it and play if they are fine with it. |
