Lynn I'm joking of course; I just have to read books I'm owing (and I'm not fast reader especially if the book is in foreign language, although I've noticed that more I read less I'm noticing the difference. I just can't help myself when I don't know certain word (even though I know the meaning of the sentence from the context) and I have to check with dictionary. that reading makes slower of course).

It's strange that Winton is not translated and he's obviously so popular in AUS (one Booker would help quite a bit!). This is very unusual cause our publishing houses are very active. For example we are usually first country that publishes Coetzee's noves in foreign languages, the same goes with Coelho, Rushdie, Tonny Parsons (who is here in Belgrade at the moment promoting his new book), McEwan, Pamuk (his latest "The Museum of Innocence" has been translated few days after first translation in German appeared and Serbia is the only country that has published his debut novel "Cevdet Bey and His Sons") and many others.

Marlene's reveal:

The Heretic's Daughter by Katleen Kent

Posted Image

Kent, a tenth-generation descendant of Martha Carrier (who was hanged as a witch in Salem in 1692), personalizes the witchcraft trials in this fictional account by Martha’s daughter. Sarah Carrier was just nine years old when she and her three older brothers also were arrested for witchcraft, spending months imprisoned under horrific conditions while following their mother’s dictum of admitting the charges against them to escape death. But Martha gave her life maintaining her innocence in the face of lying accusations that were fueled by her sharp tongue, her family’s unknowingly bringing smallpox to Andover from their home in Billerica, family disputes (including tensions between a mother and her preadolescent daughter), and grudges between neighbors—all at a time when any negative event was thought to be the work of the devil in human form. Kent brings history to life in this vivid, sometimes wrenching account of a child and her family sustained by love through the hysteria of the time. An illuminating literary debut.

4.5 stars on amazon out of 92 reviews.

I do not owe this book and will buy this book for the person who is the lucky "winner" and then will let the shop send it to them. I will register it myself and give the person the BCID.

msjoanna's reveal:

The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga

http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/7583924

Posted Image

"Extraordinary and brilliant... At first, this novel seems like a straightforward pulled-up-by-your-bootstraps tale, albeit given a dazzling twist by the narrator's sharp and satirical eye for the realities of life for India's poor... But as the narrative draws the reader further in, and darkens, it becomes clear that Adiga is playing a bigger game... Adiga is a real writer - that is to say, someone who forges an original voice and vision. There is the voice of Halwai - witty, pithy, ultimately psychopathic... Remarkable... I will not spoil the effect of this remarkable novel by giving away ... what form his act of blood-stained entrepreneurship takes. Suffice to say that I was reminded of a book that is totally different in tone and style, Richard Wright's Native Son, a tale of the murderous career of a black kid from the Chicago ghetto that awakened 1940s America to the reality of the racial divide. Whether The White Tiger will do the equivalent for today's India - we shall see." - Adam Lively, The Sunday Times (London)

---------------------------------------

This book won the Man Booker prize in 2008. I'm excited to have found a copy just a few days ago and am looking forward to reading it.

Great books so far. I really liked Breath by Tim Winton, but haven't read Cloudstreet yet (it's on Mt. TBR). Thanks for posting my reveal for me.

I know you're joking m'dear - I'm just doing my bit to spread the word of 'our Tim' to those who may not have had the pleasure of reading him yet! I know that his books have been translated into about sixteen other languages... so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before a Serbian edition of one of his books is available!

Actually, I'm deeply impressed that you read in another language (as I am by all our other BO friends who do the same thing). I was actually thinking about it the other day and marvelling that you all speak (and write) English so well. Sadly, my foreign language skills tend to be limited to asking the location of the toilet or for another drink!

I can hold a halting conversation in French - though suspect that I sound something like the village idiot to my listener :erm:
I DID think I had a grasp of basic Spanish until I was informed in Cuba that I wasn't actually commenting on the weather... but offering myself sexually to anyone willing to take me on!
I WAS wondering why all these jazz musicians were following me around Havana...!!! :giggle:
And I just wish someone had told me before then! Apparently, I had travelled through Peru and Argentina - offering my, er, services to a variety of taxi drivers and hotel managers

Hmmm, lets see.

I love the Halloween costume Talya. I'm just going to the bookleaves meeting as a wizard. I have a shirt I bought in Nepal that makes me look riduculously like Harry Potter. It didn't look like that on anyone else. I do need to find a wand and something sparkly to do with my face though.

I would like to see molekilby's reveal. I don't believe I've ever "meet" molekilby before. Nice to meet you. :)

Folks I'm rushing out (looking for a job as I mention before in this swap) and now I'm going on an interview about a job abroad (Italy). Don't know when I'll be back but have fun and chat and everything you usually do. Will comment later (Lynn I'd love to hear what you were saying; I have similar experience in Spain but it was slang sop there was no way I could knew what I'm saying).

Ruby, I PMed/sent e-mail molekilby yesterday to remind him about the swap since he wasn't on the site few days. Hopefully he'll see the message soon.

Ciao!

There are other men on bookobsessed??? he he he just teasing.

Hey Milan - good luck with the job hunt. I hope something pans out soon. Hell, I had to fly halfway around the world to find a job.

I have a really good friend who worked on Antarctica for two seasons. He's trying to talk me into finding a job there, I'm considering it. It's really good money, and a ##$% of an adventure.

I already e-mailed molekilby, so I don't feel like I can change my mind.

Well, there's always chatting.
