I know I've been away for a long time (about 6 months or so) because I was in a place with VERY limited computer access. I just wanted to give a quick update - I've arrived at my new job teaching English in Indonesia. I'll have a bit more internet access now but I won't be bookcrossing much as there aren't too many people fluent enough in English to leave a lot of books lying in random places. Also, I couldn't pack too many books due to space and weight restrictions so I got a Kindle.

Anyway, hi to all, and I hope not to be a complete stranger.
Hobbit, where are you teaching in Indonesia? I studied abroad there during university. I loved it! Bonus, bahasa indonesia is really easy to learn!

I'm in Sidoarjo. It's 30-40 minutes away from Surabaya, on Java. Where were you?

I'm trying to pick up some Indonesian but I'm still at the stage of trying to learn basic stuff like numbers, courtesy phrases, etc. I've just been here a week so I'm also cramming my brain with strange sights & sounds plus all the stuff about a new job in a new profession. So I'm going easy on my expectations of myself - but I'm picking up a new word or two each day.

I was in Jakarta and Peliatan in Bali. I traveled a bit to Surabaya and Yogya in Java. Wonderful time, but that was many years ago now (1996!). I found that knowing basic phrases helped tremendously to get around town and meet with neighbors (Sudah makan? Sudah mandi?) I think though that the most common phrase I got in the market was "Sudah kawin?" (Are you married yet?)! I was 20 at the time and thought this was both hilarious and troubling! I miss all the wonderful food there too! My host mother made the most delicious gado-gado (a rice salad thing with peanut sauce) and tempeh goreng (a spicy fried tempeh - fermented soy).

Will you be blogging about your experience? I love reading the travel blogs of fellow BOers! How long will you be there? If you have a chance, try to visit Bali. It is a fascinating place as it is a little Hindu oasis within a Muslim country. Lombok is wonderful as well!

I'm working on learning some basic phrases: Good morning, excuse me, what's the price, ...

Yes, I have a blog and I've made 1 entry since arriving in Indonesia. I'll be here 1 year. I'm hoping to visit Bali and Komodo, as well as other places. Yogya - perhaps next weekend as we have a 3-day weekend for some holiday!

My Blog about my travels!!

I'm baaaack. Wild-released 3 books - one in a pub, one in a church, and one in a phone box. :)

Our bus from the airport was delayed. We got in after midnight. Now it's one am and I'm shattered. Just waiting for Mr P to finish up his email check and then we are off to bed!

Ooooh, dd - have a wonderful cruise!!

Cheesy -- I'm flying to St. Louis on Thursday, 15th. I'll have the entire afternoon free -- and a car -- if you want to meet up. I'll send you my cell # via PM.

Just wanted to check in. I know I haven't been around much. Been mostly on facebook. When I finally get some time to myself it's so late, or early in morn that I check up on everyone on facebook. I leave a post on what's happening to me, than log out. I've been keeping up on my reading and have some books that need to pass on. So whenever Matt and I can get together and figure out what we want to do with our read books, we'll be catching up her than.
See ya'll on facebook LOL!
