Title: Paranormal & Urban Fantasy swap
Description: when should we do this?

CheriePie - March 20, 2007 09:43 PM (GMT)
For the last several months, Apolonia has been hosting the Paranormal, Erotica, Chick Lit, and Fantasy swap monthly over on BookSwap Live during the last week of each month to keep some of us Paranormal junkies happy. Thank you Ap! :D

Last month, I hosted instead and we played at BSL, but chatted here. During that swap, I mentioned moving it entirely over here starting in March, and changing the genres somewhat... to kinda "make it my own" and not feel like I'm stepping on Ap's toes! (That way she can continue the Paranormal, Erotica, Chick Lit, & Fantasy one over on BSL if she wants.) So here we are!!!! :tada:

I'm planning to do this monthly I think, held here, and the new genre will be Paranormal & Urban Fantasy*.

Okay, now that all that's outta the way... user posted image, I'm trying to decide when to hold this.

Shall I stay with the last week of the month, which would put us at the 25th? Or, because of the upcoming Raiding Bookshelves swap (which should be HUGE), Cheesy's Mystery swap (yeah cheesy, we all know it's gonna be a mystery one) , and the Who's Fooling Who Sweeps, maybe push it to the 1st or 2nd week of April instead?

So what say you o' Paranormal and Urban Fantasy junkies?? user posted image
By voting on the time, I'll also be able to gauge interest, but please feel free to add any additional comments to this thread.

* Urban Fantasy is sometimes called Dark Fantasy or even Paranormal Fantasy as well. Think Kelley Armstrong, Laurell K. Hamilton, Carrie Vaughn's Kitty, Simon R. Green's Nightside, Jim Butcher's Dresden, Hendee's The Noble Dead books, etc. You get the picture, the stuff we categorize at BookCrossing as Sci-Fi & Fantasy.... Plus there's a whole slew of new authors putting out new stuff in this genre all the time.

By mentioning LKH, I'm not encouraging you to use the older Anita books in this swap since we all know they're "relay killers". Anyone who wants to read them, already has... or at least has them on Mt. TBR.

EllyMae58 - March 20, 2007 10:02 PM (GMT)
If you're doing it here, I'll play!

Oh, and bad CP for hotlinking!! :whip: You monkey! :giggle:

I voted for March 25..'cause Cheesy might do the mystery swap on the 1st, and if redhot-brat does her anthology swap, it might be Easter weekend.

cheesygiraffe - March 20, 2007 10:08 PM (GMT)
 Cherie's a bad monkey!

I voted for the 25th for the same reasons Kel did. ;)

ETA - I'll take that banana though... :bananawhip: :P

wss4 - March 20, 2007 10:16 PM (GMT)
I won't be here the 25th. Going to Disney on the 24th and going to be gone for a week. But I can always catch the swap next month. I need to read more anyways. lol

Watching to see what date is decided.

Me and Cheesy see this big monkey with a banana that says HOTLINKING IS FOR MONKEYS!!

ETA: Maybe you should change your picture? :giggle:

 you're right! I can only see the smiley and he's doing a "tada". No wonder I didn't get it! Thank you for setting me straight Kel!

But that's hilarious!! And I'm glad I get the joke now!! I needed a good laugh!!

*off to fix picture now* (I think we need a *tada* smiley here so I'll add it to our board since I can still see it.)

CheriePie - March 20, 2007 10:26 PM (GMT)
All fixed!! :D And we now have another new smiley for the board. : tada : :tada:

BTW, I'd have probably had to clear my cache first to see the image you all saw, and I didn't do that... so I guess I'll just have to admit to being a monkey!! user posted image

PepperVL - March 20, 2007 10:37 PM (GMT)
Hmm... well...

I might be persuaded to participate in this swap... but not if it's the 25th. I'll just be getting back from out of town that day and I'll be exhausted and there will be no swapping for me.

Of course, I need to mail out more books before I swap anyway, so if it's on the 25th, I'll just catch it later.

I've voted. Hoping I can find some decent stuff at the library sale at the end of the month. Plus hoping things will slow down a bit for me at work. It's been nuts this week and it's only Tuesday.

It's kind of a slang word... I'm surprised y'all haven't heard of it. Maybe it's a New England thing...

In any case, though it wasn't in the regular dictionary, I found this definition at the Urban Dictionary.

3. skooch

1. A bothersome or nagging person.
2. To nag or consistently bother a person

1. He keeps calling me. He's being a total skooch.
2. Sorry to keep skooching, but I really need my Madness CD.

When I used it, I didn't mean that Ace was bothersome. I was thinking more along the lines of troublemaker or brat actually... which is kind of what it's understood to mean around here.

redhot-brat - March 21, 2007 12:14 AM (GMT)
Ivoted for the 25th ... Tied it up. And yeah ... What excatly is a Skooch?

25 here as well, but Tuesday after Easter seems to win so far

PepperVL - March 21, 2007 11:01 AM (GMT)
You could always host one on the 25th and again on the 10th...

Eeek!! That's no way to get the owed TBR pile down Pepper!! :whip:

At this point, it looks like the 10th is only slightly winning out over the 25th. My own proclivities lean towards the 10th actually because one of my friends will be visiting from New York this weekend, and we've got a schedule chock full of social events and obligations all day Saturday and Sunday. So I wouldn't even be able to take the time to get things set up for the swap until probably Sunday night anyway.

Then we've got both you and Wendy traveling on the 25th, so neither of you could play if we did it on the 25th.... I wonder, is there anyone who chose the 25th who wouldn't be able to play on the 10th?

cheesygiraffe - March 21, 2007 11:59 PM (GMT)
I picked the 25th but I am able to play on the 10th. :yahoo:

redhot-brat - March 22, 2007 01:26 AM (GMT)
Well I voted for the 25th , but pretty much either works fine for me. So if the 10th is easier for eveybody else .. I'm fine with it too.

Actually I was talking to shaunie on IM right before she signed off for the night and had this thread up on my screen:

CherieGeekChick: pepper said she didn't have a huge OWED TBR pile, maybe she still has a huge TBR pile..... i'm gonna have to spank you!
shaunesay: lol
shaunesay: I meant that
shaunesay: I don't consider it a TBR unless it's owed to someone else.
shaunesay: Otherwise it's just in that huge collective depository of books to some day get around to when I'm in the mood.
CherieGeekChick: heh we need an acronym for that....
shaunesay: what?
CherieGeekChick: HCDBTSDGATWIITM
shaunesay: I have this one HIBHRIY
shaunesay: yeah, I'm thinking neither of those will catch on very well
CherieGeekChick: heh too hard to pronounce! :P
shaunesay: just not as easy as ROFLMAO
shaunesay: mine is Have It But Haven't Read It Yet, cause I answer that a lot.

PepperVL - March 22, 2007 04:28 AM (GMT)

I consider it to be TBR if I have it and haven't read it, unless it's part of a series and I don't have the earlier books so I can't read it until I get more books. So if I have book 2 of a series but not book one, I don't count book 2 on Mount TBR, but the other books I have but haven't read are TBR.

I have Mount TBR and my Incomplete Series pile (which is MUCH smaller).

And then there's Mount To Be Mailed...

nan1970 - March 22, 2007 02:29 PM (GMT)
I voted for the 10th because I have tons of TBRs to take care of, and because life is gonna be crazy for me until around Easter.

I'll play whenever, though, and I'll be sure to leave my moves with someone so that we don't have a repeat of the last swap I was in..

Ya'll are so funny. And it makes me feel better that I'm not the only one to categorize my books. Especially TBRs.

Brand new TBRs
New used TBRs
BC TBRs
Series TBRs
Borrowed TBRs
Library sales TBRs
Owed TBRs - of which I don't have any right now.

At least I don't currently have a To Be Mailed piled. I sent all those out last Saturday.

CheriePie - March 22, 2007 09:31 PM (GMT)
My TBRs are broken down similarly as well. We've got:

Owed TBRs (stuff owed from swaps, trades, VBBs, rings and rays, 1-6 mo turnaround)
Reserved TBRs (often planned RABCKs, non-library borrowed books, and the like not as time sensitive as Owed, 6-12 mo turnaround)
PC TBRs (which get the least amount of time in my reading queue unfortunately)
Mike's TBRs (stuff I've already read but am hanging on to so Mike can eventually read)

Shelbycat - March 23, 2007 09:11 AM (GMT)
I wish i could join in on this swap but i don't think i have anything suitable. I suppose i could always go out shopping ... *ponder*

Shelbycat - March 23, 2007 01:05 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the welcome! :waves:
I think i've decided to try to go to Hay-on-Wye for my birthday so i can look for some books for this swap. In which case i'd like it to run any time after April 2nd.

caseyw - March 23, 2007 01:53 PM (GMT)
Hi Shelbycat! :waves: Great to have you with us here at Book Obsessed.

Not sure where you're located, but you might try checking with your local library for discarded books they might sale or second hand stores for some inexpensive ways to build up your BC shelf.

Shelbycat - March 23, 2007 04:28 PM (GMT)
Right, i've found a book so count me in whenever this starts! It's number 2 in a series so i can't actually read it :( But it looks really good *tempt*
I'm so overexcited!
