Ahhhh, for those of us poor internationals with no access to these exclusive clubs  , what does it say?
candieb - March 17, 2007 07:05 PM (GMT)
Okay, this lady Jessica posted that she only reads christian lit and was tired of all the cursing, like most threads, it turned into other stuff and some were talking about how they have potty mouths, so I posted this (because it's funny, dammit!)
| QUOTE |
Yeah, I curse up a storm too. I blame the 4 years I worked for a construction company *laugh*
I've gotten a little better since my kids starting correcting me. ;)
I don't know if I told this story, but... in the car, I'm the WORST. Just horrible. You name the swear, I use it. I hate driving. My son is the language police. Seriously. So, one day, I'm driving down this freeway that makes me crazy here and this jerk almost sideswipes me because he's on his cell phone. I call him a name and my son says
"Mommy! You aren't suppose to say that, that's a bad word!"
Me: "Yes, I know, I'm sorry"
About 10 seconds later, this lady decides to pull into the fast lane (my lane) and slam on her brakes. Yeah, I called her 2 names and it shook me up because I came [this] close to hitting the stupid #$#@% #$#$#!
Him: "Mommy! That's a bad word!"
Me: "Yes, I'm aware of that!"
Him: "You shouldn't say that word or the other one either."
Me: "Yeah sorry, but the lady almost made us wreck on the freeway, honey"
Him: "But Mommy... you"
Me: "Jamie, just shut the he!! up"
Him: (Sharp intake of breath) "MOMMY...."
Me: (turns radio up so he can't hear me anymore - and vice versa)
It's weird because he doesn't use the words, neither does my daughter, but they are both quick to catch me if I say something. One day they are going to get wise and start a swear jar and make me pay them a quarter or something every time. Dude, I don't think I can afford that. |
Then twit girl said this:
| QUOTE |
CandieB, I am sure you are a very successful woman and I wouldn't even begin to say you are not wise, but the conversation you relayed in your post just flabbergasted me. I could never imagine telling my child to shut the hell up. Why would you do that? My children frustrate me and make me angry often, but I would never ever use that tone or that language with my children.
I realize we live in different worlds and that may be acceptable in yours, but in my world, that is akin to verbal abuse. |
To which I have replied this:
| QUOTE |
Jessica, let me just say this -- I grew up in a very abusive home, verbally, physically and emotionally. I've been through a lot to come to where I am today, which is a wonderful loving adoring mother.
That hurt and I think I need to go away for a while before I say or do something that would be very hurtful to others.
Yes, of course it was joking. I know my son. I know the situation. I was merely relaying a funny thing that happened with my "language police" son. The fact that you took it as anything else just proves that some people look for the worst in everyone. I wish you the best of luck in your life if that is your outlook.
Many people on this forum know me very well, that is why I felt comfortable sharing. What a horrible person you are to say such a spiteful thing. You should be ashamed, in my opinion. To me, this just proves my whole theory about... ya know what? Nevermind, I'll just leave it alone.
I see you've had like 5 posts here, you obviously don't know me well enough to make ANY snap judgements. |
Christian, indeed. What a wench. Doesn't really "bother me" because well, I've known people like her all my life, but she's still a twit.
cheesygiraffe - March 17, 2007 07:29 PM (GMT)
Been there done that Candy. With my kids that is not the lady assuming the worst of you. Sorry about people like that.
meshe - March 17, 2007 09:41 PM (GMT)
Piss on her. You know what kind of mom you are, and what kind of kids you have. I can't imagine what she would think if I relayed some of the conversations that I've had over the years with my now 16 year old son. But, both of us know that we use those words jokingly and lovingly and that takes away their ability to hurt. Others may not understand, but the words have no power until you give it to them. We don't give them the power to hurt.
EllyMae58 - March 17, 2007 09:45 PM (GMT)
I feel that if your son is telling you that you are using bad words and that you shouldn't be using them, that you are doing damn good job of raising him.
Poop on that twit. :bash:
CandieB

Wow what a mouthful that woman has :whip:
candy so sorry
Breeze - March 17, 2007 10:56 PM (GMT)
You've taught him right from wrong and that'll get him through plenty in his life. She's just looking to cause trouble....
candieb - March 18, 2007 01:56 AM (GMT)
Thank you! Someone understands me! *laugh* I was like "this is good, right? He knows cursing is bad" plus it's kind of funny that I'm constantly apologizing to my freaking 6 year old! And I agree with taking away the power of some words. If they grow up never hearing them... hehehe... okay that might be rationalizing too much... *laugh*
Whatever, at least I know I'm not insane (much)
apolonia - March 18, 2007 02:01 AM (GMT)
That lady sounds like a loser, I can't stand people like that. Honestly why would you make comments like that when you know nothing about the person.
Candie stay away from the forums there, come play with us instead.
candieb - March 18, 2007 02:18 AM (GMT)
LOL... I only post on there from time to time... I post here MUCh more, trust me :P I wander over there sometimes when I'm bored or just looking around. They are all nuts over there - well, we are crazier here, but like a better kind of crazy. ;)
Breeni - March 18, 2007 02:54 AM (GMT)
I agree with that Rainey person: words only have the power you give them. My mom keeps trying to convince my kids that butt and fart are curse words.
I am also a sailor mom who has cussed at her children and probably will again (and I work in a children's store), and I can't figure out for the life of me why they absolutely refuse to repeat the cuss words I use! Who's the parent here?
Thankfully, I have finally managed to control my anger enough that I can read that thread and not go off the deep end. That's why I never go over there anymore: no need raising my blood pressure over people like that.
happybunnygirl - March 18, 2007 03:00 AM (GMT)
Sounds like me...I'm always appologizing to my 4 year old cuz he catches me when I say damn. lol
kislany - March 18, 2007 06:07 AM (GMT)
Geez, what a twit indeed! I took it the way you wrote it, a funny story, which shows how well your kids know right from wrong. I was smiling reading that. Until that person reacted.

I agree with this!
On the other hand, one time I told the kid I was babysitting to "shut up" and his mother got very upset because she had forbidden him to say "shut up". I didn't know those were sort of curse words in their house!!
But back to you, Candie, I'd say like several others have already said - don't even think twice about what somebody who doesn't know you says about your parenting skills.

I find intolerance so offensive!! It just sets me off. That is one very closed, narrow minded person.
WestofMars - March 18, 2007 03:41 PM (GMT)
Nou, your reply over there should have come with a beverage alert. Precious.
Candie, you're dead-on right on this one, girlfriend. You live your life the way you do it best. And dammit, I read your blogs. I know you're one of the best, most caring mothers out there and how you do it AND run your business at the same time, I'm still trying to copy.
"Jessica" said it herself -- she's AFRAID to branch out into other fiction because she's AFRAID of the language. Last I checked, bad words won't hurt you (but sticks and stones will). However, living in fear is always harmful. Get over it. Welcome to the 21st century. We swear. That's how life is.

I'm not a member so I can't read the forum!
cheesygiraffe - March 18, 2007 05:49 PM (GMT)
quoting Nou here:
"wow!! It seems to me to be very closed minded to judge people by the language that they chose to use. Jessica, enjoy your christian fiction! I'm sorry that you will never branch out and embrace others."
caseyw - March 18, 2007 06:56 PM (GMT)
I'm a Christian and even teach Sunday school (ages 9-12), but I'll be the first to admit I have a potty mouth. I have to really watch myself at times. Even worse, our parrot, Sugar, has picked up some the words and I just about hold my breath when we have company over that she won't cut loose with something inappropriate.
Anyway, this woman has no right to pass judgement on you or anyone else regardless of beliefs.

Me too! I call it my pirate mouth. :) It comes out when I'm really frustrated. I try so hard not to do it at work because people have expectations of me not to talk like that. I usually save it all for my husband. lol

LOL Breeni, this sounds like me! Perhaps I should first say that I grew up in a home where there was absolutely no cursing - I don't recall being told those words were bad and not to use them - we just didn't and I've never heard either of my parents swear. However..... I went through an angry period in my early twenties and I started cursing, don't know why, it just seemed to happen. Anyway, ever since then I swear a LOT - but my son very rarely swears in adulthood and when he was a kid he never repeated the things I said! Since he was in his teens, there have been several times when he'll hear me swearing when other people are around and he always chuckles, shakes his head, and says "That's my Mum!! and I love her!"
They really truly are just words - why, the 'f' word is one of the most versatile words in the English language - it can be used in an amazing variety of ways and can express everything from supreme joy to intense anger!! The only one that I never use and that makes me flinch when I hear it is the "c" word - there's just something ugly about it - but I know full well that that is only my feeling and I don't think or feel differently about someone who chooses to use it.
There are just so many more important things in life to be offended by - like intolerance!
Oh, and I can't stand people who think they "hold themselves to a higher standard" - to me, that just means they think they're better than others and what they really need is to get their heads out of their butts. :nono:
And, oddly, I do some self-censoring I guess, because I know I've never sworn in front of a customer at work! ;)
AlterEgoZoe - March 19, 2007 01:04 AM (GMT)
I think you're going to hear cursing wherever you go, so it is pointless to censor them totally out of your life. my 2 cents

I just wanna reach out and smack people like her..
WestofMars - March 19, 2007 02:37 PM (GMT)
Here's what I posted. True story!
I have an acquaintance who writes mysteries. In her latest manuscript, her editor called and asked her to remove three instances of the same four-letter word, using the rationale that if the word remained, Wal-Mart would refuse to carry the book.
The word came out. No clue if Wal-Mart sells the book or not; I forgot to ask.
However, armed with this knowledge, it seems safe to suggest to Jessica that she shop in Wal-Mart for her books instead of getting to know the booksellers in her local independent bookstores, who not only need the business but who pride themselves on finding the perfect book for their customers. Wal-Mart has taken on the task of censoring books for her, and she ought to be guaranteed, if not quality in the writing of the books she buys, then definitely a lack of language she doesn't care for.
needmorezoloft - March 19, 2007 02:39 PM (GMT)
| QUOTE (WestofMars @ Mar 19 2007, 08:37 AM) |
I thought of a really good, benign seeming response...
You see, Wal-Mart refuses to carry anything with certain words in it. I know this because a well-published, best-selling (according to her book jackets) mystery writer I've met tells the story of how she had three f-words in her manuscript, and her editor asked that they be removed, so that Wal-Mart would carry the book.
Therefore, it stands to reason that if you don't want to buy books with certain words in them, you should buy books at Wal-Mart.
Good old Wal-Mart. Protecting the public from the f-word.
Gee. In a world filled with terrorism and hatred, I feel safer now. Don't you? |
Thats why I don't buy CDs from Wal-Mart... I'm a big girl.. I can handle the bad words and I don't want someone editing them out.
WestofMars - March 19, 2007 02:43 PM (GMT)
I don't buy ANYthing at Wal-Mart, but that's a different story.
and yes, I edited my post to reflect what I posted over there.
caseyw - March 19, 2007 03:02 PM (GMT)
The Wal-Mart I shop at doesn't censor their books. I've bought a number of books there with all sorts of four letter words in them. Very strange.
As for that woman, if she really wants to be safe as to her reading material, she needs to stick with the Christian book stores like Lifeway.
candieb - March 19, 2007 03:10 PM (GMT)
I buy from WalMart occassionaly (like if it's midnight and no where else is open and I absolutely have to have something). But I despise them. The censoring was the last straw for me. Don't tell me what to read or listen to. I'm an adult.
Breeni - March 19, 2007 03:54 PM (GMT)
I don't buy CDs or books at Wal-Mart, as they're much cheaper to buy online anyway. But I stopped buying CDs there years ago because of the censoring. At least offer both versions so that the consumer can make their own decision. I've never noticed if they edit the books.

I have to say that I shop at whichever store is closest to me and has the best price. If that means Wal-mart then that's where I shop.
cheesygiraffe - March 19, 2007 09:29 PM (GMT)
I'm like you meshe but I still can't stand Wal-mart. :P They are always so busy and crowded. Drives me crazy. I love Target too. They have the best clearance sales on clothes.

But I could just be bitter about them messing up my schedule this week.
Breeni - March 19, 2007 10:36 PM (GMT)
The closest Target is about 30 minutes from my house, so unless I stop en route to work, I don't go there too much. Plus it's a SuperTarget and I always get lost. Wal-Mart's all we got round here.

The Wal-mart that is closest to me isn't real busy. It's nice and big, with wide aisles and a great parking lot. It's really a nice place to shop. It's only been open for 1 year, so it's still pretty and clean and new looking. I think that's why I don't mind shopping there. The other two locations in our County are older and more crowded. Target is all the way across town and I only go there when I'm on that side of town for something else. But they do have great clearance items and not just clothing. I'm always buying candles and pillows and little kitchen items.
