Thanks for posting this info
We don't feed our babies this stuff, but I'd definitely be glad to know if we did!
SciFisstrs - March 17, 2007 11:08 PM (GMT)
Sammy doesn't get this food either.
sarradee - March 18, 2007 07:10 PM (GMT)
It's not just cat food, it's a major recall of many different types of canned dog and cat food.

Yet another reason I feed my pets raw...
mysterious - March 18, 2007 11:45 PM (GMT)
That is the same list I saw too, our cat food brand isn't listed.
ladyjanet - March 19, 2007 02:35 PM (GMT)
Thanks for listing this! I hadn't heard and we had a can of Iams for kittens on the shelf. Sparks won't eat it (she only likes her Purina One kibbles) so I just tossed it.
needmorezoloft - March 19, 2007 03:35 PM (GMT)
Good to know!
I don't have pets
My sis I think feeds the dogs dry, but I'm gonna let her know just in case!

They've recalled stuff here in Canada too now, apparently. My dad was reading stuff about it earlier. My kitty eats Science Diet a lot.... and in December we gave her some of the Iams in question, and she hasn't been doing really well since then. She got really bad and we took her to the vet, and he said he thought it was something with her kidneys but he wasn't quite sure what. He gave her this general antibiotic/antiviral combo med, which she took for a while and got much better. Then she stopped eating it no matter what we did, and now she goes up and down :s
candieb - March 21, 2007 06:08 AM (GMT)
Wow, they added stuff since I looked at this last week... and we are using Nutra something -- or we were until they put us on the 'script stuff... Hmmm... I'll have to check the can in the fridge, I don't THINK it's the same stuff, but that would just figure - ugh.
My friend's neighbor's dog had 9 puppies a month or two ago... 7 have died from kidney failure :(
JessicaEby - March 21, 2007 06:21 AM (GMT)
My cat's in one of her doing-better phases right now, but I'm not sure what she's eating.... it's dry food, though. She used to eat dry food all the time, the wet Iams that she had just before her kidneys went crazy were the first wet food she'd had in a loooong time.... the vet gave us some kind of wet food that he said she should eat cause she's old (I think it's MediCal or something) but she refuses to eat if we give her that stuff.
chambejd - March 31, 2007 02:40 PM (GMT)
The recall has been expaned to include the Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food.

I just heard that it was exteneded to Del Monte Pet foods, and Pounce (the treats for cats). I think I also heard that Purina has been recalled. Also they said that cats have a higher sensitivity than dogs to the whatchamacallit poision. ( I would imagine that puppies and small breed dogs would have a higher sensitivity than larger breed dogs, too)
ETA: You can find the Del Monte Recalled food
here

It's just Purina Alpo Prime Cuts moist dog food.
http://purina.com/None of their cat food and none of their dry food is recalled.
I was worried for a minute as I feed my cats Purina dry.
noumena12 - April 1, 2007 05:56 PM (GMT)
Yeah...my mom called in a panic...but her kids get the wet version.
Ours are eating Royal Canin right now and so far are safe.
AlterEgoZoe - April 1, 2007 05:57 PM (GMT)
Oh thanks for the info Pepper! I was worried I would have to take the cat food back to the store (Chapeau gets Purina Dry).

   You know, I have been really sad about this whole pet food fiasco (and relieved that our kitties food wasn't on the list!) but just now I read this and now I am just freaking furious!!!
CFO of company that recalled tainted pet foods sold half his shares right before news went publicI know I shouldn't be surprised... but I am completely disgusted with big business all over again, you know?
JessicaEby - April 12, 2007 01:45 AM (GMT)
I heard that Medi-Cal soft food was recalled here too.... that's what the vet gave our little one after she got all messed up from (or, at least it looks like it was from) the other stuff. :( Smart Kitty for refusing to eat it after a can or two...
terrafreaky - April 12, 2007 02:19 AM (GMT)
We're pretty sure that this is what caused my little Niblet to go into kidney failure late last year. (at the age of 6. GRR) But of course I have no food and no cat to test, so I'll never know.
I could just scream. They had no idea what it was at the time & she suffered greatly. We had to make the choice to let her go.

The FDA has posted an Excel file with all the recalled pet foods -

And the latest recall is Natural Balance Venison Dry Formula both dog and cat:
Natural Balance is recalling their Venison and Rice dry dog foods and Venison and Green Pea Dry Cat foods.
http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/Not related to the Menu Foods recall, this one is another issue entirely, but it affects the people who switched over to Natural Balance to escape from Menu Foods.

ETA: Ah, ha. It is related to the Menu Foods issue, there was melamine found in the rice protein concentrate.
cheesygiraffe - April 17, 2007 02:47 PM (GMT)
Both my cats are fine. I think.... Although thanks to my mil's dog staying with us last week, they now have fleas. :( Our yard needs to be sprayed for them. That's where the poor dog picked them up.

Hi-
Has your vet checked your kitty for CRF (Chronic Renal Failure)? My cat, Tigger, was diagnosed with it a few weeks ago, and it is manageable once you have identified it.
