Title: So Good you have to Steal it
Description: Starts March 17th
apolonia - March 16, 2007 02:28 PM (GMT)
This swap was originally being hosted on BSL but I've relocated it here, I think it might be a little easier.
This one is a little different than the usual swaps so please read the description.
Any Genre is fine, there is a catch though. You must offer a book so good that someone steals it. If the book you offer doesn't get stolen then the player who ends up with your book has the option of looking at your shelf and naming a minium of 5 TBRS or AVLS, you must choose one and send it to them in place of the book you offered. (Of course the player may keep the book even if it didn't get stolen if they are happy with it.)
Check-in every 12 hours, (at least) if your going to be gone longer than 12 hours please post in the forum. It's not required, but if you'd like feel free to leave your reveal, or moves with other players.
If you know how to update, please do. When I work I'm usually gone for 10-12 hours so I love the help.
Here are the players so far that have signed up on BSL:
If you still want to play please confirm here. New players also welcome.

EllyMae58 - March 16, 2007 03:18 PM (GMT)
Oh, this one sounds neat. I'll play! Sign me up, pretty please!
ETA: Oh wait, maybe not. I have to take the car in tomorrow, and so I'll be away from home for part of the day, 'cause then I'm going shopping with my mom.
What to do what to do....
ETA again: Okay, yes, I'll play. I found the perfect book! I will probably just have to leave my reveal and/or moves (depending on the order) for the first part of the swap since I'll be gone...and then on Sunday too since I have a meetup.

Could I play? I have to work tomorrow, but I'll leave my reveal and move with someone.

Okay since some peeps haven't played a game over here before, nor Aileen (hopefully she'll come over and play too since I'm gonna try to make it easy for y'all) -- I'm going to post a concrete example of how to prepare your reveal, using a book I used in the Best of 2006 swap earlier this year.
You'll compose and send this to a couple other people using your Inbox here on the forum, so that you can use the forum's italics, image, and html tags like so:

Owls Well That Ends Well by Donna Andrews
This is the 6th book in Donna Andrews's hilarious Meg Lanslow Mystery series.
It's not required to read these books in the order they were published. In a few cases, it might give you some additional background about some of the main characters and their personalities, but it certainly doesn't affect the story negatively by not doing so. I started with the fourth book myself, and then went back and found the earlier ones.
Book Description Ever since Murder with Peacocks won the Malice Domestic Contest (not to mention the Agatha and Anthony awards for best first novel), Donna Andrews has kept readers laughing. As Publishers Weekly says of Crouching Buzzard, Leaping Loon, "There's a smile on every page and at least one chuckle per chapter."
But the secret of Andrews's humor isn't sharp gags and one-liners. From Meg Langslow and her boyfriend, Michael, to the minor characters who cross the stage and disappear, Andrews writes about real people, and invites the reader to join in the fun.
In Owls Well That Ends Well, Meg and Michael have bought a very elderly house from the estate of the uncrowned Queen of the Packrats, a woman who bought everything and kept it all. When the house became overcrowded, she moved the overflow into the barn. When the barn was crammed, she began filling the property's sheds. When she died, her "holdings" left the various grandnieces and grandnephews with decades of junk. They avoid the job of cleaning it up by selling the place "as is" to Meg and Michael, sticking them with the lot. Their solution: a yard sale.
... (clipped for brevity) |
Just like when you're composing a forum message, you can view your PM before sending it. It's usually a good idea to send it to at least one other person who's in a different time zone from you, possibly even overseas, so that someone might be available to give your reveal if you're sleeping.
To get an image to use, and this comes up on BookSwap Live as well, I find it easiest to use Amazon. Taking the above book as an example, I go to
it's Amazon page and
right click on the image.
UPDATE 31-MAR-2007: I've actually found it even easier to do the below steps using the image from the BookCrossing journal page instead. That way, if there's any of that extra "Search Inside" stuff attached to the image, it has already been stripped out for you! :D
From Firefox: From the right click menu, choose
View Image. (Hold down the Ctrl key while clicking View Image to load in a new tab instead of the current one.)
To get rid of all that "Search Inside" stuff, remove BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-dp-500-arrow,TopRight,45,-64_OU01_ from the URL in the address bar. After removing all that, hit Enter to verify the extra stuff is gone and you've got only the image.
This is the URL you'll use in your description. From Internet Explorer: From the right click menu, choose
Properties. Next to Address (URL), you'll see an http address. Drag your mouse over that, making sure to scroll down so that you get it all (it should end in .jpg), or if you triple-click, it should select the entire field, including any parts you can't see. While it's still highlighed, press Ctrl-C to copy it to your clipboard. (Or you can right click on the highlighted text and choose Copy, but if you do this, make sure you don't left click first or the highlighted text will become unselected/no longer highlighted.)
Paste this copied URL into your browser address bar and manipulate it the same way as above, removing the BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-dp-500-arrow,TopRight,45,-64_OU01_ part, and then hit enter to verify it looks right.
This is the URL you'll use in your description. The example I gave above is just a suggested format you might want to follow. Feel free to make it your own, include your own review, whatever you'd like...
Ask if you have any other questions... :D
EDITED TO ADD: Just in case this isn't obvious... if someone else sends you their reveal, you're not supposed to peek until you need to show it. :nono: :peek:

Ok I've updated the list, I'm still waiting to hear from a few more. I'll start us sometime tomorrow. It might not be till night because I want to give the others who signed up on BSL a chance to come over here. So we are still open if anyone else wants in.
EllyMae58 - March 17, 2007 02:59 AM (GMT)
Who wants my reveal, just in case it's needed tomorrow and I'm not around?

FOUND YOU!!!!!! :waves:
Here I am Apolonia and looking forward to playing. I'm sure you'll all be patient with me as I've not played on this site before but it seems a similar format to the bcuk extra site so I shouldn't be completely hopeless.
I assume books details are posted here among the chat - is that right?
Now to get my irresistable book (fingers crossed) so that I am ready to play, find a good avatar for my sig, etc.
Love your bunny avatar CheriePie!
CheriePie - March 17, 2007 09:30 AM (GMT)
Hi Candy! I'm glad you made it over!!! :waves:
I haven't swapped over in the BCUK forum but I believe you use a similar format over there, where it's all just done manually.
If you scroll up a bit, I gave an example of the info usually included with your reveal, basically the same stuff we'd enter over at BookSwap Live. The only thing that makes it a little harder here is we don't have a Rich Text Editor, so you have to place the codes for URLs, IMGs, etc. in your text manually, or use the code buttons above your post box to do so.
w00t w00t!! :woot: :woot2:
Heh, oh and re my bunny avatar... I know... isn't it just sooooo appropriate?? :giggle:

yup, though sometimes for large swaps we keep a separate reveal thread too, which makes it easier to look through what's available without scrolling through like 20 pages to find all the reveals. :D

Welcome Candy, glad to see you made it! It's pretty simple here, I'm sure you'll catch on quick. Plus everyone here is helpful.
I am going to start 2 new threads, one for reveals, and one for playing/chatting.
