Title: Last Unread
AceofHearts - February 24, 2007 03:41 PM (GMT)
I have a problem where the little blue button indicating there are unread posts does not show up regularly beside the topic titles and I miss some of the posts. Is there something I should be doing so they show up?

Me to Ace! so I'm sure it's a forum issue and not just yours. It's friggin' annoying though hey? :bash: If the 'go to last unread button' isn't there I don't bother looking at other threads most times.
I think Cheesy suggested going to 'todays active topics' or something like that but I find that a bit tiresome to, because it brings up things I'd never look at (VBBs). Plus you still have to scroll through and find the last place you were up to in the threads you like :whip:
We're use to being spoilt .. haha! Hoping something can happen to make it better but I don't like the chances as I think it's just how the basic forum is.

Here's what I've noticed (and it may or may not be working the same for you...)
The blue last read buttons are working just fine.
HOWEVER, closing my browser is equivalent to marking every thread in the forum as read. So when I come back to the site, it only gives me the little blue buttons on threads that have been updated since I was last actually at the site. If there was a thread I didn't go into last time I was here, it's still been marked as read and won't have the button any more.

w00t w00t! :bounce: Thank you Pepper for explaining it in terms everyone can understand.
I was sitting here going to write about the topics read cookie and how it's set to expire at the "end of session" and all this other stuff that usually make people go huh?
But also, I was seeing the behaviour like you described, and hadn't yet taken the time to figure out the logistics. That whole thing about showing updates and all.
But anyway, the way my info fits in with yours is that yup, because of the session only cookie that I mentioned, when you close your browser, the topics read cookie is removed (and acts like a mark all read). And when you come back next time with a new broswer session, only the threads you've already visited are updated with the little blue guy when you come back. That info is probably kept in a persistent cookie or with your login info (which is cookie-based too).
Thanks for explaining it so much better than me chickie!!

So the next question...
Is there anything we can do about it?
I've missed posts because of it too as I don't always have time to go into all the threads I want to every time I visit the site, and then when I come back I forget to go into them because they're marked as read.
I'd much rather keep the blue buttons until I've manually marked all the threads in the forum as read or actually gone into and read all the threads. The way it currently is, there's no point in just popping into the site for a couple of minutes on my lunch break or something - it does me more harm than good.

I don't think so, but I've been searching now and again on the various support forums to see if it's discussed. Unfortunately, since the word cookie often appears at the bottom of the main page, it was kinda taking that into consideration in the searches and I wasn't coming up with the results I was hoping for. But so far no luck in that no one else has asked after this.
If I can't find anything in the coming week, I'll see if I can try to take your wording to describe it and ask after such functionality in the invisionfree support forum.

I find that annoying also. I don't think it was like that in the former forum was it?

No it wasn't. Things would stay marked as unread until you either went to the page or clicked the link to mark all topics in that forum as read.
But that might be the difference between the basic forum we have now and some of the upgrades we had before...
