Title: BookRelay Updates
Description: Status of the move

CR - January 8, 2006 04:39 PM (GMT)
Ok, here's an update...

- BookRelay.com has been moved to a new, dedicated server.

- I have modified the Internet's DNS entries to point to the new server...this will take 2 to 3 days to propigate (spread all over the Internet)

- I have made bookrelay.com a "primary domain". Before it was an "addon domain", added to my own personal web site. So before, when you were going to http://bookrelay.com, in reality you were going to http://kuesers.net/bookrelay. That's why you sometimes saw error messages that said "/home2/kuesers2/public_html/bookrelay" in them. Now the error messages will say "/home/relay2/public_html"

- I have added a few security features that will hopefully help, and not get in the way...so if you see any weird errors, let me know, and I'll try to fix it.

- I've set up daily backups, so that if anything weird happens, I can get a backup up and running quickly, without going through support to get them.

- So far, with only me on the server, it is VERY fast. You all will have to let me know if you see an improvement.

There is still quite a bit of work to be done, including:

- Converting all of the pages to point to the new server and file locations (today)

- Moving the database to its own dedicated database (hopefully today)

- Waiting for the Internet to recognize the new location of bookrelay.com (I'm going to change the "we're down" message to show that it's on the new server, so people can start letting me know when they see the new message.)

- Testing to make sure everyting moved ok

- Opening BookRelay up to the world.

There are a few things this new configuration will allow me to do if anyone is interested:

1) If you want a "bookrelay.com" email address (either a pop account or a forwarder), I will make them available for a small price (read donation)

2) If you want to host your own small web site on the server, I am happy to host them...for a little bit bigger price (read donation)

3) I can install pretty much anything I want now, so I will be updating to the latest and greatest of whatever I can get my hands on.

My best estimate now is that we will be back up and running in 2 or 3 days (on Tuesday or Wednesday). Here within the next day or so, you will probably go to http://bookrelay.com and get some funky error instead of my "pretty" page.

This was fast, I get some funky messages now like this

"
Warning: main(DB.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/relay2/public_html/header.php on line 5

Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required 'DB.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/relay2/public_html/header.php on line 5"

I just visited the forum and no errors, although I did miss some threads

It DOES look like it's there, doesn't it? I guess we shouldn't use it, though?? or should we??

MissyZ - January 8, 2006 05:50 PM (GMT)
Migt be safer to leave it until we get the go ahead...

ZmrzlinaToo - January 8, 2006 05:51 PM (GMT)
Noticed a few threads have been truncated, particularly the Relay Wishing thread.

And blogs are missing entries, but I bet it is all because not everything has been transfered. I am going to wait until we get an "all clear" from CR.

Ishepoh - January 8, 2006 06:12 PM (GMT)
Your doing great work CR!! :bananadance:  :bananadance:  We are all 100% behind you! If we can do anything, just let us know :D

Now....GET BACK TO WORK!! :whip: (j/k) :P

meshe - January 8, 2006 06:24 PM (GMT)
Yep, I think waiting until we get the all clear is the way to go. He did say it would probably be Tuesday or Wednesday before everything was ready to go.

Nope. Don't use it. It's not actually up yet. You're getting the old forum.

Danesnboxers - January 8, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
Awesome job CR. Thanks for all you do.

morsecode - January 8, 2006 11:12 PM (GMT)
CR, this all sounds wonderful
Thanks so much!

It looks like bookrelay.com is spreading across the Internet. I can now see the new one too. Weird thing is, differnet people will see it at differnet times. Some people can see it now, some won't until Tuesday or Wednesday.

I'm still working on converting the database (It's HUGE!), but otherwise things look pretty good.

CR - January 8, 2006 11:49 PM (GMT)
^^^That's me ^^^

MissyZ - January 9, 2006 12:21 AM (GMT)
bookrelay.com says it's on the new server for me...

Gotta love DNS...

Weird thing is...it will probably go back and forth between the new server and the old for you a couple of times between now and Tuesday.

Trust me...it's really not there yet

Guest - January 9, 2006 02:05 AM (GMT)
Ok, I've done my part. If you can get to http://bookrelay.com and actually see the site, you should be good to go. Go do a few things and let me know if you see any problems.

The rest of you...just keep waiting. All we're waiting on now is for DNS to propagate.

CR - January 9, 2006 02:07 AM (GMT)
Ok...very weird.

I just saw the new site and tested it, and now my DNS is pointing to the old site again. That's the kind of weirdness you'll have to deal with for a couple of days.

Either way, we're close. :bananadance:

I've got a list of things I couldn't do at the relays, CR. Want it, or should we wait to see if it self-corrects once it's pointing to the right spot?

Antheras - January 9, 2006 02:19 AM (GMT)
All I see is the notice about the server move.

Then you're still pointing to the old site. That's ok...I expect quite a few like you until Tuesday or Wednesday...and righ tnow, I'm like you too! :bash:

Shoot it at me. I'll see if I can get things in working order before everyone else comes home.

sarradee - January 9, 2006 02:34 AM (GMT)
I see the new site, but it looks like a day or two is missing. The ARC relay shows me as the last person with a book on offer and it was accepted from me the other day. Also all the relays are at least three days old.

I thought that would probably happen.

Order of events:

1. The old server got overburdened
2. They moved everything to a temporary server
3. People used stuff on the temporary server
4. They set up the new server, and pulled everything form the old (not the temporary) server.

So anything that happened since I got the original email...Friday night, I believe...is probably gone. I don't think there is anything I can do about it, but I'll try...so I'll shut down the site for another day to see if I can get them to give me the database from the temp site.

KarinAlyssa - January 9, 2006 03:12 AM (GMT)
I don't see anything for now, but I'll look it up tomorrow to see if there's a change.

CR - January 9, 2006 04:33 AM (GMT)
Ok, I got the data from the temporary site, so we can have updates from up until they brought the site down (hopefully). It looks like everything is there.

The process of converting the database to work on the new server is time consuming, but I should be able to finish that tomorrow AM and have the site back up tomorrow afternoon (give or take DNS weirdness)

I don't know if I'm seeing the new or the old site but when I click the link above I get this message: "Site down temporarily. Be back up soon." And I'm not sure if when I go to the forums I'm getting the one on the new server or the one on the old server or however that goes. I'm so confused. LOL. Meanwhile, I'll be around here until you tell us it's good to go back. :)

Thank you so much for all your hard work, CR.

I get the lovely "The page cannot be displayed" error message
for both
http://www.bookrelay.com/
and
http://www.bookrelay.com/forum

I'll be hanging out here until I'm told otherwise :D

Guest - January 9, 2006 12:59 PM (GMT)
Ok, the database is moved over...for any of you chumps that managed to sneak in and post a post or two while we were "down"...well, those are gone gone gone! The last post is by SandDanz talking about the site going down...and wondering if the forum will be down soon...yep!

I'll leave it "offline" for a few more hours...while I test some things. After that, anyone that can see the new site can use it, and let me know if you have any problems. I squashed some big ones last night, so hopefully we'll be good to go.

noumena12 - January 9, 2006 01:50 PM (GMT)
I'm still seeing the old server :(

Hmmm.... I get the *new* relay site now. And there's something I want to accept...
should I hold off?

SandDanz - January 9, 2006 01:54 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure what I'm seeing, but I don't get the message about it being down anymore (at least from the hell hole that is... will have to check again from home later today)

The new one says:
"[your user name], This IS the new site. Problems? Let me know."
In the place where CR usually has a message saying that you are his favorite member

Yes, me too. :) And I get the new forum too... or at least I did just a moment ago. :)

noumena12 - January 9, 2006 02:29 PM (GMT)
The message I get says...
"Site down while we're moved to a new server. Should be back up 1/10 or 1/11 (or whenever you no longer see this message) :-) ... I think this is still the old server."

Betsy-StL - January 9, 2006 02:43 PM (GMT)
