Title: Hair color
Description: help me decide
cheesygiraffe - February 12, 2007 10:14 PM (GMT)
I'm getting my hair cut and colored on my birthday, Thursday. I know I'm just getting the split ends cut off because I'm growing my hair out but I can't decide what color I want to go with. I'm not doing highlights or streaks or what have you just one solid color. I was born blonde but alas it's mousy brown with lots of gray peppered in there now. I colored my hair blonde in my teens and twenties. Last year I went with a coppery color. I can't decide if I want to do that again or something else. What do y'all think?
I will post a pic of me from a couple months ago. Don't scream from fright though.
CheriePie - February 12, 2007 11:04 PM (GMT)
I almost chose Copper, but that sounds too red to me, and based on your description, sounds as if it'd be lighter too.
I'm thinking an Auburn Brown, which has some red to it, but is more brownish, would look beautiful on you, especially with your curls and all! And it's in the medium brown range.
appaloosatb - February 13, 2007 12:31 AM (GMT)
I think all giraffes should be orange. :P
Seriously though, have you ever done a strawberry blonde? With your light complexion, blonde with just a hint of copper/red would be lovely. :)
By the way, color me jealous! I love your hair.

Only cheesygiraffe is orange. All other giraffes are various shades of brown and yellow. :P
I tried strawberry blonde once and I looked washed out.
Thanks for the compliment but some days I want to trade my hair for straight hair when it doesn't behave.
Kyrissaean - February 13, 2007 01:22 AM (GMT)
Well of course my first thought was giraffe-spot-brown.... :D
But then giraffes tend to have a streak of sass, so a bit of coppery shimmer would probably be good! So I did pick copper, but I'd say not too light a copper if the strawberry blonde washed you out or you might end up with the same thing.
rannie - February 13, 2007 01:30 AM (GMT)
I like the color you have it in the picture. Medium brown with hints of red sounds
good too.
SandDanz - February 13, 2007 05:11 AM (GMT)
Eeep! Cheesy & I are tied for most posts... ahhhh... this post will change that.
SciFisstrs - February 13, 2007 06:55 AM (GMT)
Your hair looks nice Cheesy. but if you want to change it up a bit I pick copper.
giz-angel - February 13, 2007 09:51 AM (GMT)
Pink cheesy - it's the only way to go ;)
However, I suspect that's not very helpful..... so I like the auburn brown idea.
I have pink streaks at the front right now and the colour keeps running when it rains
cosmic-gin - February 13, 2007 10:33 AM (GMT)
I voted the coppery colour to :D I'm sure anything would look great on you though. You're a beauty not a beast .. who would dare be frightened of your face cheesy? :bash: Make sure you post a pic when you get your hair done....
camis - February 13, 2007 10:42 AM (GMT)
I voted other - I'm thinking more deeper reddy brown, maybe mahogany??
wss4 - February 13, 2007 01:14 PM (GMT)
I'm with the auburn crowd. I think that the richness of the reddish tint would really go well on you.
morsecode - February 13, 2007 02:15 PM (GMT)
coppery, definitely coppery
though, you are pale enough (like me!) that you might look really great with rich dark brown hair
noumena12 - February 13, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
I love being a red head...for starters...it covers the gray nicely! :whip: I think you'd look great in Copper!!! And it won't be too far off from your natural color.
mysterious - February 13, 2007 03:43 PM (GMT)
I am not sure about coppery tones... I love them, but it can make some people look sallow and washed out.
You look like you have brown eyes, light skin and a redish undertone to your skin. (vs peachy/olive/neutral)
I am not a risk taker so take advice from me with that in mind........ take the color of the stuff that is just coming in at the scalp, bring it up a shade lighter, add highlights (called gray disguise) and then bring in a few low lights with an auburn undertone vs coppery.
You are one of those girls that looks like you could pull off blonde-red - or brunette if the shading was right.
cheesygiraffe - February 13, 2007 05:58 PM (GMT)
What if the stuff coming in at the scalp is gray?
lizziwhizz - February 13, 2007 06:01 PM (GMT)
iwant to vote for rich dark brown, too. it would cover grey well and be a real change. i think it would be nice with your skin tone.
Also, what a great thing to do for yourself for your birthday! a little bit of pampering goes a long way!
Melinda010100 - February 13, 2007 06:34 PM (GMT)
Oh Cheesy, your hair is so gorgeous! I remember seeing pictures of you where it looked lighter than it is now- I voted copper.
dancing-dog - February 13, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
I know I'm in the minority here but I think salt & peppery hair looks kind of cool! And just think, the upkeep is minimal!
<dancing-dog, who is slowly getting the salt & pepper look herself & trying to talk herself into thinking it is something good!>
giz-angel - February 13, 2007 11:12 PM (GMT)
See the one good thing about being ginger is no grey hair..... although I hear what you are saying dancing dog..... I'm just not completely convinced it'd suit me!
cheesygiraffe - February 13, 2007 11:14 PM (GMT)
I must say my gray hairs are actually white ;)

then they are merely natural highlights La Cheese
meshe - February 14, 2007 12:12 AM (GMT)
my hair is dirty dishwater blonde if left natural. I generally have both highlights and lowlights put in at the hairdressers. Right now it's been about a year since I've had any highlights and I'm trying to let it all grow out to see what it'll look like naturally. I don't have any gray, but with hair my color, I think it often just looks sorta dirty and dingy with gray. I'll probably get more highlights but right now, I'm just being lazy. I did let my cousin cut off the yucky ends at Christmas and now have a shoulder length bob. It's simple and easy since my hair is thick and straight. Very little work required.
I love the salt and pepper on folks with really dark hair. My mom has never colored her hair, it just grayed naturally from her coal black and her hair is beautiful and always has been.

Me too and that's what I have. I just wouldn't take the effort to keep any color up. My hair is very dark brown and the grey coming in his silver (God's highlights, afterall). I like salt and pepper as long as the grey isn't that yellowy grey.
PepperVL - February 14, 2007 02:08 AM (GMT)
I'm not a big fan of dying hair. You're born with the hair color that suits your complection... and there's nothing at all wrong with gray/white hair.
Of course, I'm not a big fan of doing anything to my hair at all. I don't even blow it dry or use hair spray most of the time.
CheriePie - February 14, 2007 03:37 AM (GMT)
I found my first gray hair on my 21st birthday, and by the time I was 30, I was over 50% gray on top of my head. And because I am so conscious about taking care of my skin and all so that I age gracefully, I really don't need my hair making me look older than I am, especially when there's nothing I can do about it.
So I do color my hair. For the longest time I did my own coloring at home, the semi-permanent stuff, but now that I'm about 75% gray on top (at only 38 years old), I let the hairdresser do it. (Also because I don't have to pay for perms anymore so regular hairdresser visits have always been in my budget for as long as I can remember.)
In any case, yeah it might be one of my few vanities, but being that gray in my 30s, and the fact that my otherwise oily skin has kept my face young looking, I'm not about to go gray just yet! Damn evil grays!! :shedevil: Hate 'em!

Some people look good in salt & pepper...but NOT when you have mousy brown hair like I do!! It's is just plain ugly. I've always said that when I go beyond being able to only color every 4-6 weeks because there is too much gray...I'm just coloring it all gray. On me, that in-between stage just isn't pretty,

I'm dark brown too.
Haven't tried dying my hair yet, right now it looks more like......the FALL season.....you got this entire dark forest but one morning you wake up find out a select few have changed to silver. More this year than last.
My husband (same age) has bypassed salt and pepper.... very little pepper left on that head.

I don't agree that your born with the hair color best for you complexion. It's all genetics. Do you think those born with deformities should leave them there? Okay that's way drastic but I like coloring my hair and hate the color it is.

I agree with you Ann.

I haven't died my hair in a long ass time.
I remember my aunt had some gray, but apparently she dyed it and I didn't notice until she got outta prison and she (no lie) had a gray streak in her hair like Mortisha Addams. I LOVED IT!!! I thought it was so cool, but she couldn't stand it and dyed her hair again.
cheesygiraffe - February 14, 2007 09:13 PM (GMT)
Your hair is dead so you can die it :P
Your aunt was in prison? :o

There are, of course, exceptions to every rule, but I honestly believe that for the vast majority of people, the hair color they have naturally (or had naturally if it's gone gray/white) is the best color for their complection. The more people vary from their natural color when they dye their hair, the faker it looks (in my opinion).
I'm not saying that people shouldn't dye their hair. I'm saying that, MY OPINION is that, should people choose to dye their hair, they should stick to subtle changes rather than drastic ones because that is what I THINK looks best.
As for the deformities thing, that is a completely, totally different subject that I am so not even going into.
PepperVL - February 14, 2007 11:19 PM (GMT)
I think that came out sounding harsher than I intended.
Never mind me. It's a bad night. I wasn't trying to tell you what you should or shouldn't do, Cheesy, just stating my opinion on the matter. I know it's not the popular one.
Sorry.

I am probably timid as well, that is why I told La Cheese that I'm probably am not a hair color risk taker. The poll speaks for itself and is probably the best sampling of opinion. Only one mention of giraffe spots to support the other extreme
I was just putting myself in her place and thinking as you get older (not that she is old at all) you probably want to brighten your hair by a shade. With highlights and low lights I thought it would look more natural. I know every strand of my hair isn't the same color, unfortunately, my hightlights are silver at the moment but still to the point I can just cut those strays out if I wanted to. :P
cheesygiraffe - February 15, 2007 01:02 AM (GMT)
Your fine Pepper. I was being silly.
And I'm tempted to color my hair a very odd color just because but then I'm too straight lace to do that. :P
cheesygiraffe - February 15, 2007 08:18 PM (GMT)
I had it colored light auburn. We decided auburn was too dark for me so lightened it up.
I don't a picture because my digital camera is broke so I'm posting a pic with what it sorta look like. Except my hair is longer and I have no bangs. ;)
CheriePie - February 15, 2007 09:00 PM (GMT)
cool. I think the auburn would go much better than the copper personally. How are you liking it?
cheesygiraffe - February 15, 2007 09:13 PM (GMT)
I like it. :D Now that I look at that pic of Gillian more I think mine is browner with a hint of red where her's more red. :P
rannie - February 15, 2007 09:19 PM (GMT)
Sounds great, Cheesy. I always said in my next life I wanted to come back a redhead in a convertible. (but I'm way too lazy to color my S&P.)
