Description: how to make the knotted kind
TwiggySC1973 - February 1, 2007 11:59 PM (GMT)
I want to make one for paperback books and I need another one for hardback books for those times when I like to read different books at the same time.

I'm not sure what they are :s

I found this googling, hope it helps some.
"Use hemp twine (the softer kind) and beads. Measure your string 3 or 4 inches longer than you need the finished piece to be. (You can always trim off the excess, but you can't add to it.) Be sure the beads have a hole big enough to accommodate the string or twine you will be using. Tie a knot in one end, string a few beads (3 or 4) then tie a knot above the beads to keep them from slipping up to the top. At the top, place smaller, coordinating beads and tie them off the same way. Be sure to leave the middle empty. The beaded ends will hang out the top and bottom of the book. So measure accordingly and keep the size of your beads in mind as well.
Experiment with different themed bangles, tassels, glass or acrylic beads, crimping beads, hemp twine, beading wire, thread, embroidery floss, etc. The possibilities are limitless!"

I make/use the ribbon kind.
Half stays in the back of the book, the front half marks my page, I flip it up and over the top of the book while I read, and place it back to mark my page when I'm done.
Sorry they didn't scan up very pretty, :( the scanner puts a glare on the beads, but these work for me.
Each one is a different length HC, Soft cover and Paperback.

Here's a example of a book thong:

I've seen those. Cinderella247 makes those, she sent me a few, they are single length and the plus side of the hemp/twine is it is cat proof ;)
I keep my ribbon ones out of claws way.

You can use leather too. Any kind of string would work. But the stronger the better I imagine. :)
I have a book thong that you made me Myst. :D

Oh..then you must be really special, I didn't sent those to just anybody. ;)

Antheras makes some nice ones with a very thin wire
ladyjanet - February 2, 2007 03:21 PM (GMT)
I like to use waxed cord. I never thought about making them twice as long to flip over the book Myst- I'll bet they stay in the book better that way. (I've found that heavy beads pull the thong out of the book if it's pages side down in my bag. )

I have good luck with it staying in when doubled.. like a thong wedgey ;)
Okay, I showed you all my thongs, lets see some of those others.
Waxed cord / thin wire :D

I'm special as well. I use one that looks like the pink one, if it actually isn't exact that one.

Thanks for that info everyone. I am gonna try and make them now :D
My mate bought me one back from the US and I have never used it the way it's 'suppose' to be used. I have always had it half in the marked page and half over the outside (down the binding). Holds in place! I didn't know it was suppose to have the ends at the top and bottom of the book .. haha! Will see how that works next time
AceofHearts - February 2, 2007 10:20 PM (GMT)
Lauren and I made some for our birthday pals with ribbon but the waxed linen cord sounds great. Do you think this might be available at Michael's?

Thanks fantasy. I love to crochet and think I might try that one.
fantasy221 - February 3, 2007 03:57 AM (GMT)
yeah I only know one stitch but I think I can handle that. I plan on trying it too just as soon as I find some beads. And time. ;)
SciFisstrs - February 3, 2007 07:03 AM (GMT)
The ribbon ones are so pretty mysterious :)
But with the crochet one I don't think I can do that. I couldn't even ask Meg for help she is worse  But I think with Meg's helpI can swing the wax cord kind :D

Thanks Fantasy. I could do that ! :D
Next time I'm at a crafty type store I'm going to check for waxed cord.
The crocheted version and wax cord version would allow me to use some of the charms I have on the end.
CheriePie - February 3, 2007 11:04 PM (GMT)
I certainly wouldn't mind something like this from my valentine's or birthday partner since I'm sooo at the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to arts and crafty stuff like this. *hint hint* in case one of my partners is reading. ;)
TwiggySC1973 - February 7, 2007 02:34 AM (GMT)
The kind I have is (it looks like cross stitch floss to me) that is knotted in a chain with different colors and on the end it has beads. Someone gave it to me in one of my partner exchanges and it has red, green, and pink beads on the end with a plastic strawberry on the end. I guess it's knotted like those knotted bracelets.

I'm not sure these can be considered as "Thongs" , but for those into arts/crafts kinda stuff ..... they are VERY cute bookmarks. They are called Bookmark Buddies.
I have one called Hippity Hoppity Horse ... (I cheated) I bought mine at a local bookstore for $4. After showing it to a friend though ,she used a small stuffed toy pattern (cut in half) and added in the elastic for the same effect.
Either way , bought or made, they are adorable book critters and look to cute sticking out of the top and bottom of your book.
Here's a link to a site that sells them for $2.95 ... if you wanna see what they look like.

These are cute too. Matt bought one like that for my birthday. I use it mainly for the hardbacks. I think it's a little heavy for paperbacks.

I looked at them and they look kind of thick... or is that just me? Would you be able to close your book over them? Or only hardcovers?

That's why I said I only use it on hardbacks. Because sometimes even a hardback doesn't close all the way because of thickness of the body. Plus the bear's head I adjust so it fit's snuggly. Also I have a pocket on the side of my bed. It's a mattress cover, and if I don't postion the bear's head somehow my covers lose my place.

i used to make bookthongs/bookmarks with embroidery threads and i used to create them using the friendship bracelet tecniques. i had a fair sized bag holding all my embroidery skeins for this purpose, but sadly i lost it all when i moved house with my parents a few years ago.
i didnt have the heart to start my embroidery skein collection all over again cos they are expensive and each item uses a fair bit of thread per colour strand i did. i dont like using normal cotton cos it just doesnt look as nice.
redhot-brat - February 13, 2007 02:24 AM (GMT)
They aren't really that thick ... atleast not the one I have. The center piece that fits in the book is just a standard piece of elastic. The only probelm I ever have with mine is our puppy thinks it's a toy and pulls it out of my book every chance he gets. LOL.

LOL  totally loses it's functionality as a bookmark by that point, huh? :bash:
redhot-brat - February 13, 2007 07:16 AM (GMT)
LOL ... Yup .... and I STILL can't get my hubby to understand why I hide my book when we go to bed at night. He's answer is ... " use a different bookmark".
I guess you gotta be a reader to get it. I LIKE my horsey best.
