Title: Non Genre???

chronicbooker3 - February 1, 2007 02:56 AM (GMT)
Hey Morsie any thoughts on a Non Genre swap sometime soon. Feels like its been awhile :(

yourotherleft - February 1, 2007 03:36 AM (GMT)
Ooo, I'm ready for another, too. I love a good non-genre swap - non-genre is my favorite...genre! :D

HoserLauren - February 1, 2007 03:55 AM (GMT)
I asked her at the last meetup and she said she would cook something up for us sometime in the near future :D

 mine too!

morsecode - February 1, 2007 02:28 PM (GMT)
How 'bout starting Feb 17th?
Is that good for people?

I'm sorry I've kinda dropped the ball on this (in terms of getting it scheduled), just been busy...

I am looking forward to it though!!!!

azuki - February 1, 2007 02:49 PM (GMT)
Did I hear SWAP? :pirate:

What's the difference between a non-genre and a YBS?

HoserLauren - February 1, 2007 03:59 PM (GMT)
If you want me to help you or take over for this swap if you're too busy I'd be more than happy to!

Feb 17th isn't that good for me. It's my reading week so I'll be in DC. I can do the week before/after :)

Azuki - non-genre is basically any fiction/literature book. So it can't be a mystery, fantasy, chick lit, or anything you could classify as a specific genre. The Kite Runner would be a good example of a non-genre book.

KarinAlyssa - February 1, 2007 04:18 PM (GMT)
I wish I could play :( Please reveal good books, so I can add some to my wishlist!

It's like a YBS except there are restrictions on what books you can offer
You're not allowed to offer mysteries or chick lit or horror or romance or westerns or scifi or... you get the picture

Lauren, I'm perfectly OK with you hosting the swap if you'd like to.

As for the date, I just kinda pulled it out of the air: it's not to soon, not to far off
Settling on another date is fine with me

I will be at my parents between Feb 7 and 11, but I can still play - I just won't be able to check in as often (particulrarly on the 7th and the 11th when I'll be in the car for the better part of the day)

HoserLauren - February 1, 2007 07:38 PM (GMT)
Alright so the 10th and 17th are not the greatest days to start.

How about the 24th? :)

AceofHearts - February 1, 2007 10:46 PM (GMT)
The 17th is also when the Historical Fiction will be :D

I see - I thought non genre means anything goes, no genre restrictions.
Obviously i am still a newbie!! :P

Make an exception for this one time ;)

geishabird - February 3, 2007 05:56 PM (GMT)
I'd definitely participate in a swap like this. As someone else noted, non-genre is my favourite...genre.

morsecode - February 3, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
I'm definitely going to be playing in both
I haven't decided on my reveals yet, though :)

Don't feel bad azuki, I didn't recognize the distinction between the two either so I was glad to see you'd asked by the time I got around to reading this thread. :D

Antheras - February 4, 2007 02:14 PM (GMT)
I'm in!

CheriePie - February 4, 2007 08:50 PM (GMT)
I've got so few of this (non-)genre that I'd be afraid everyone would've already read anything I have.

BTW, what about historical fiction, like The Other Boleyn girl series? Is Historical Fiction it's own genre, or does it fall into this non-genre?

HoserLauren - February 4, 2007 10:34 PM (GMT)
Historical Fiction is a "genre", so it shouldn't be used in the non-genre swap.

Breeze144 - February 4, 2007 11:45 PM (GMT)
I'm in (after some severe pressure was applied at the meet-up today)!

catsalive - February 5, 2007 03:56 AM (GMT)
I don't think Historical Fiction is a genre, is it? It could be anything, romance, thriller, lit., children's, classics. A lot of literary fiction is set in historical times. Where does this leave a book like The Book Thief or Shadow of the Wind?

???

morsecode - February 5, 2007 02:15 PM (GMT)
In the past we've allowed historical fiction.

But I think even we decide not to allow it this time - literary fiction that's historical should still count. At least that's my 2c.

butterfly-noir - February 5, 2007 02:20 PM (GMT)
well I have a historical book almost avl lol, I was planning to use it on the historic fiction swap...I have to check if I have one that fits non-genre, so I can play both...

I was thinking the same thing - Cold Mountain, The English Patient, My Name Is Red, Alias Grace, anything by Sarah Waters or Rose Tremain or Jane Urquhart...these would all be disallowed if classified as historical fiction - and I've never considered them that. "Historical fiction" is a very dodgy "genre", if it is one at all.

HoserLauren - February 5, 2007 10:20 PM (GMT)
I see historical fiction as a genre. Otherwise it wouldn't be called historical fiction. And that's why there is a historical fiction swap :P

If it's shady historical fiction - you can't tell if it really is historical fiction or not, then give it the benefit of the doubt and call it non-genre. If enough people want historical fiction to be allowed in the swap, then by all means. I just hope that the swap doesn't turn into a historical fiction swap.

chronicbooker3 - February 5, 2007 10:46 PM (GMT)
I agree that historical fiction is a genre of its own and we have a historical fiction swap going on this month. There are alot of good non genre books out there that my vote is to keep it simply non genre. Just my two cents, dont want to anger anyone :D

zzz - February 5, 2007 10:59 PM (GMT)
I see historical fiction as a genre as well, truth very wide genre (or should I say with many sub-genres) but still.

Someone has mentioned Shadow of the Wind. I wouldn’t consider that as historical fiction: everything settled in the past is not “historical”. That same story could easily be settled in future or in the space and it wouldn’t be significant change in the plot. So this could be non-genre book.
Complete opposite is with My name is Red where historical background plays quite (in this case extremely!) significant role. That story couldn’t be moved in some other time (even in different century).

Plus there is Historical Fiction Swap already. Moreover in the same months. I don’t see the reason why should we force HF in this one too?

CheriePie - February 5, 2007 11:51 PM (GMT)
Heh sounds like I opened a can of worms.

I agree that certain historical fiction like Philippa Gregory's books about the Tutor period, are more strictly historical than other stories which just happen to take place in a past historical time. For the Gregory books, they are, like zzz said, they have to take place in that time.

The reason I brought it up initially is that sites like Amazon, and my Book Collector software don't classify Historical Fiction as a separate genre, so I wasn't sure if it was one we just kind of made up. But paranormal also falls into that category. Paranormal in and of itself isn't a real genre name, and Paranormal books are expected to be classified first as either Romance, Fantasy, Horror, etc.

But I see the point and I think books like Philippa Gregory's are definitely Historical Fiction and would be invalid for this swap...

Antheras - February 6, 2007 12:32 AM (GMT)
I vote to keep this swap strictly non-genre.

HoserLauren - February 6, 2007 12:43 AM (GMT)
I think the point is that non-genre is when a book can't be categorized into anything else, whether it's into an "official" genre or not.

geishabird - February 6, 2007 01:38 AM (GMT)
I ought to say that I don't like genre-fying in general. I am reminded of something Ursula LeGuin said once, when asked why she wrote science fiction: "Because that's what my publishers call the books I write. I call them novels." :P

I still maintain that a novel is not by definition "historical" just because it it set in a historical period markedly different from that of the individual who wrote it. But I think we may have to agree to disagree on this point!...In the meantime, I solemnly swear not to offer anything in this swap that might be considered in any way historical. Deal? :D

giz-angel - February 6, 2007 12:48 PM (GMT)
I vote non genre too but I am biased cos I don't like that much historical fiction - I am a philistine  but I agree it is hard cos some stuff is difficult to define. Would you call Anita Shreve historical? I guess it is.

Anyway I must find a book for this swap :o

camis - February 6, 2007 02:11 PM (GMT)
I really want to play in this, but haven't got anything available. Do I break my rule and offer a TBR??? Argh, decisions!

azuki - February 6, 2007 11:16 PM (GMT)
Same here, I don't have anything in my AVL. Maybe some in the TBR. But the thing is, until I read it, I don't know for sure it's non genre... So hate it as I may, I have to skip this one.
