Title: Readthrough - The Crimson Petal and the White
Description: Vote if you intend to take part
Sunlightbub - July 21, 2008 09:38 PM (GMT)
In the last read through vote the winner was The Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faber.
I just wanted to check how many people intend on participating :)
It is a bit of a doorstopper, but to whet your appetite here's a synopsis:
Gripping from the first page, this immense novel is an intoxicating and deeply satisfying read. Faber's most ambitious fictional creation yet, it is sure to affirm his position as one of the most talented and brilliant writers working in the UK. Sugar, an alluring, nineteen-year-old whore in the brothel of the terrifying Mrs Castaway, yearns for a better life. Her ascent through the strata of 1870's London society offers us intimacy with a host of loveable, maddening and superbly realised characters. At the heart of this panoramic, multi-layered narrative is the compelling struggle of a young woman to lift her body and soul out of the gutter. The Crimson Petal and the White is a big, juicy, must-read of a novel that will delight, enthral, provoke and entertain young and old, male and female.

It's a read-along. We all read the same book and discuss it.

I might join in -- I have a bookring copy of that book right here in the house with me. I'll seriously consider bumping it up to discuss with y'all.

Funny, I just got this book recently from the Bargain Bin at Books-a-Million. I'd love to participate, but it's quite a book and I'm very busy these days, haven't been reading much! Will there be a reading schedule?
Xeyra - July 22, 2008 05:58 AM (GMT)
I voted Maybe because I'm going to be away for two weeks in August and I'm NOT going to carry my hardcover edition of this monster around. That thing weighs a ton!! :P
I may be able to pick it up when I return in mid August.
Sunlightbub - July 22, 2008 07:22 AM (GMT)
As to rules..there aren't any!! I'll post a thread (or a couple as it's such a biggy) and when you feel like it you can post and read others posts...no stress involved and you can take as long as you like!
msjoanna - July 22, 2008 05:46 PM (GMT)
I'm going to be away from Aug. 13-20 and Aug. 22-Sept. 16. I don't know when/if I'll have internet access on either trip, so I don't think I'll be much of an active participant if it starts in August.
That said, I'll throw the book in with my vacation reading and try to read it while travelling so I can at least read through the threads when I return.

Well, theoretically yes, but I have too many owed books which I need to read before the baby gets born and I am a slow reader so there is no way I would have time to read this doorstopper right now!
How many pages does I capture the castle have? Maybe I can make that...

I started this yesrterday and thought it would be ones of these books that I struggle with, not only due to the length but it looked too highbrow for me. But I have been pleasantly surprised in that I am loving it so far and am finding it a quick read. Hope everyone else is enjoying it. Looking forward to discussing it.
