Title: Starbucks Store Closing List Released

shaunesay - July 18, 2008 11:29 PM (GMT)
I didn't know if anyone else here is as much of an SB addict as I've become, but if you're interested, here is the list of stores that will close:

http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/USStoreClosureInfo.pdf

Only 3 in Kansas, I am SERIOUSLY surprised, I figured we'd get hit hard just because it seems like we have so many so close together, but they must be making it. Two of the three I have been to, but they're not really on my main route. I feel bad for anyone losing their jobs though, as I know how it feels up close and personal. :(

Megi53 - July 19, 2008 12:47 AM (GMT)
Thanks for posting this, shaunesay. My Starbucks isn't closing, I was glad to see (they let my son and his band play in their courtyard!) but sadly, my daughter's nearest store will be gone.

Thanks for posting - I'm a SB addict and I didn't even know they were closing stores.... but I don't watch the news either.... I knew they were doing a lot of restructuring and such - they were supposed to come out with a new breakfast sandwich in the spring and that got cancelled when their management decided they needed to get back to the basics of coffee and pastries... I don't like their pastries much though and wish they would change those! Anyway, none of those listed are near me - we have a TON of them here too - I pass 7 on my way to work! :giggle:

HoserLauren - July 19, 2008 01:46 AM (GMT)

Everything I've been reading (googled it after reading Shaunie's post) is all about US closures - haven't seen anything about any international stores....

Aw, man! And that's one of my biggest complaints is that I wish they offered some real breakfast food! I would be in real trouble if they did say a ham and cheese sandwich/biscuity thing, I'd be there EVERY day!

We have like 4 all on one street, that's why I'm surprised none of them were on the list, but they must be pulling in enough to justify keeping them! I'm glad, I think... it's not necessarily a good habit!

HoserLauren - July 19, 2008 02:42 AM (GMT)
Hopefully they get their act together, restructure, and create a more stable brand. Though I admit that I'm making my own coffee much more frequently than buying from any store.

There may be some Canadian store closes eventually. They're focussing mostly on international opens and domestic closes at this point, so far as I've heard. I wish they'd stuck with the breakfast sandwich idea, too. We never got any in Whitehorse 'cause we are too far away from any supplier, but the problem, I was told, was that the sandwich warmer and the smell of the heated sandwiches interfered with that "coffee" smell that Starbucks loves so much, so that's why they got nixed. (Here's a true story: Way back when I was, like, 12, I went to Vancouver with my best friend and walked into a Starbucks for the first time in my whole life. As I stepped through the door, a slightly puzzled look crossed my face and I couldn't stop myself from saying, "It ... smells like coffee in here." I guess they achieved their goal that day!) They've come out with some new protein health drink that's a "forever" member of the line-up, but it has nothing to do with coffee, so I don't know how it fits in with their esspresso branding and return to the core of coffee thing that they started in the spring, but it has resulted in a bit of a kuffufle since all the banana-allergic members of staff have to be laid off now. (That includes me.)
Still, on the subject of closings, I know that both the stores here in Whitehorse are safe. I mean, we only have two! They opened the one downtown HOPING it would draw some of the business off the Chilkoot location, but then the local shop down the street closed its doors (not because of Starbucks, but because of insurance costs 'cause their location had burned down, like, twice), so now they've got tonnes of downtown business and hardly drew any of our business off the "fringe" store. They could probably put a little one in at the community sports centre, or on campus, or at least one other location closer to Riverdale (where I live) and we still wouldn't be suffering in our town. Mind you, I've seen spots in Vancouver where there are four stores, kitty-corner to one another, within 4 blocks of one another, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of the larger centres see some closures. I expect that not a lot of people will lose their jobs, though. There are still so many stores open that most employees should be able to be absorbed into the remaining locations.

momx3lovesbooks - July 19, 2008 03:45 AM (GMT)
Oh man the closest one near me is closing. Im bummed.

Jordanne - July 19, 2008 07:28 AM (GMT)
I am still hoping they'll open some Starbucks stores in the Netherlands

giz-angel - July 19, 2008 08:33 AM (GMT)
Don't think there is an effect here - I'm not a massive user of starbucks although I do go in sometimes - but I have no loyalty I am just as likely to go to Cafe Nero, Costa or Pret  I prefer the food in Costa they have fab sandwiches. But it's so expensive - that's the thing that annoys me most.

there are 3 in Schiphol but they are not really planning to go here because we already have a coffee tradition.
Countries, like The US, didn't and UK, Japan China had tee traditions.

Well that is what I've heard. There are quite a lot of people that even signed a petition for a Starbucks.

here is more info

I think we do have lots of places where you can get the best coffee. Only thing I miss is take away coffee.

bluecat07 - July 19, 2008 10:24 AM (GMT)
We have about six of them in Frankfurt and I love them! Everytime I go into the city and I have time I go to Starbucks, get a Caramel Machiatto, read my book or newspaper and watch the people pass by. There are some brands that try to imitate Starbucks and are a bit cheaper but we don't have many of those yet. And the German cafés are so old fashioned and you get served and after you finished your coffee they expect you to leave of course. That's what I like about Starbucks - you can stay as long as you want without having to order more than a coffee.

When I did my internship in NYC in 2004 it was paradies! A Starbucks on every corner! I especially loved the one in a bookstore (can't remember its name) where you could also read the magazines for free. That was awesome! :D

Oh yeah! My fave store had started handing out little flyers announcing them - with pictures and everything! They looked fantastic and I was looking forward to them! I hope they do come out with them eventually.... ;)

No, it's not necessarily a good habit, but there are much worse habits to have! I'm at SB twice a day during the week and at least once on Sat and Sun....

I haven't tried that protein drink - it really doesn't appeal to me - I go to SB for COFFEE!! But I think it's an attempt to have something for the many health conscious people who are eliminating evil things like caffeine from their diet, and SB still wants their money. I've never heard of a banana allergy - so you can't even handle them?

I agree with you on that - SB is ALWAYS hiring! I have an acquaintance who manages one and she asks me to come and work there every time I see her! They are apparently an excellent employer, but I like my daytime hours job and weekends off..... ;)

I sometimes go to Aachen (a German town) which is near and they have a SB as well. I love that!

Schiphol is a bit far for me Marlene :D

And I don't think you can compare SB to the Dutch places... no way.
That's one of the things I love so much about going to England!

Daelith - July 19, 2008 12:54 PM (GMT)
Quite a few of the one's near me will be closing which doesn't surprise me at all. They've put too many too close together on Germantown Road. Plus they have one in the Barnes and Noble and then a regular store right next door to that. The one in B&N will not accept Starbuck's gift cards though. So you leave with your books and walk across the parking lot to the regular store that does.

The one I don't understand why they are closing is the one in Oakland, TN. It has not even been open a year yet. That is a very fast growing area. Foolish of them to shut that one down.

AceofHearts - July 19, 2008 02:34 PM (GMT)
We have the breakfast sandwiches here but I have never tried them. The new drinks are glorified smoothies. A bit too many calories than I like (250) but taste good. I tried one when I went with Chronic the other day

The same thing with the one near me. The paint isn't even dry yet on the walls! It's a college town and if given the chance I am sure it'll profit.

If they close this one (and Im sure they will) I'll have to drive almost 3 hours for the next actually Starbucks, we do have a few knock-offs around.

JessicaEby - July 20, 2008 04:04 AM (GMT)
I'm not a Starbucks fan... but you see, I absolutely HATE coffee! I hate the smell of coffee! I rarely shop at the bookstores with Starbucks in them just because I don't like to be around the smell that invariable drifts into even the farthest reaches of the bookstore! But I do go to Starbucks once in a while before exams as they're nearby and I can get a big drink of something non-coffee-ish (like green tea or hot chocolate) and study while I wait for my write-time. If it's nice I'll just study outside.... but I AM Canadian, and when my exam days aren't snowy and subzero they always seem to be rainy!

Anyway, my boyfriend's room mate was quite upset because our city just got its 2nd Starbucks location. He is a coffee drinker, but claims he won't go to Starbucks because "it's way too complicated to order there." Now Adam and I can't stop laughing/making fun of it.

Now back in Canada I was never a Starbucks fan - I was all for Tim Horton's, and I still think they make THE best cup of coffee. For anything other than the basic coffee, I'm a Second Cup kinda gal - and Second Cup's dark roasts just can't be beat! Hey, how is Second Cup doing now anyway????

I'm not too fancy at Starbucks because I ONLY like coffee - can't stand flavorings or caramel or whip cream - I'm a "skinny flat latte" there... unfortunately, that only describes my drink and not ME! (and that's a non-fat, no-foam latte, BTW - coffee lingo IS complicated and I also know people who won't go to Starbucks because they think they don't know how to order or feel silly ordering, it does take getting used to!)

indygo88 - July 20, 2008 01:00 PM (GMT)
I feel guilty....! Right now as we speak, they're building a new Starbucks here -- right on my way to work! :bananacheer:
They announced they were going to do so about 1-2 years ago, then when I heard several months ago that they were going to close a bunch of the stores, I figured they had scrapped the idea of building this one. But lo and behold, they're just zipping right along with construction. Looks like it will be ready to open within the next couple of weeks. Yippee!!! :bananahop:

I certainly HOPE it's not being built just so that I can see it close down in a few months...

Second Cup is GREAT! There's one in the mall in Cambridge... I prefer the TO locations that are their own stores.... but the drinks are just as yummy in the mall. Second Cup's Italian Sodas blow away all the other Italian Sodas around here... they make them with actual soda water instead of just &Up/Gingerale.... and Second Cup has the most delicious summer time beverages, like Cherry Vanilla Chillers and (my downfall) Skinny Chocolate (formerly called Frozen Hot Chocolate... but Skinny Chocolate is specifically made with skim milk... and chocolate chillers use other milk) :yum: I'm too cheap to get them often as a small is about $4, but when I do buy them, I LOVE them!

fantasy221 - July 20, 2008 09:01 PM (GMT)

Yep...NYers will go into shock...I mean they need a SB on at least 3 street corners every 2 blocks!

I am a starbucks addict...and a loyal member of their rewards program (although admittedly, I'm confused by it). We didn't lose any here in Dayton so I'm relieved. I love my local SB and they love me. (well, really, who wouldn't).

I HATE drip coffee so it's espresso beverages all the way for me. Did you know that you can add a shot of espresso to the Chocolate Banana Vivano? yum!

That is the only thing my husband drinks. I like the one with chocolate chips in it. Luckily for me there isn't one on the way to work, so it's a treat for us when we go.

We are doing a morning shake (herbalife) that's cafe late flavored and with light vanilla and chocolate soymilk and SB ain't got nothing on me.

It doesn't affect me. There isn't one here. The closest one is an hour away. I see they are closing several in Alabama. I've been to the one in the mall in Huntsville. But it's an hour and half from me. I was hoping we'd get one being we have a University here even though it is small.
