Title: Wishlists
AceofHearts - July 17, 2008 09:54 PM (GMT)
I was hoping wishlist would be incorporated into BC but since the mess this morning I realize it will only be a wings feature.
Where do you suggest I transfer my massive wishlist?
tranq1 - July 17, 2008 10:17 PM (GMT)
I'm not a wings member and I see that there is a wish list added on my bookshelf page. The moved over the books from Cliff several months ago. The list is out of date and it is hard to update because I can't sort it into alphabetical order.

Evidently you can manage it but you can not sort or search.

I'd make a request for that in the forums or wherever you do that. cause at this point erm.. well this is the time to do it. I wrote them this morning making a point of several things - not the least being that the search-ability of the wishlists was a *huge* feature of cliffs and one of the main reasons.
*goes back to tussling with upgrade of her own*

Moving your wishlist off BC is really only a good idea if you care about sorting and searching your own wishlist. Non-winged members can still see your wishlist if they go to your specific page and click on wishlist. Non-winged members just won't be able to search the wishes and invite you to rays/rings or know that they can rabck you a certain book unless they go to your wishlist specificly. I guess I just don't see the point of moving a wishlist to a different site. It doesn't really benefit you in any way that I can see. Please feel free to enlighten me!

Well, um, Non-winged members WILL be able to search the wishes and invite you to rays/rings or know that they can rabck you a certain book without specifically going to your wishlist.
Plus, I prefer to sort my wishes so I can definitely see what's on there.
AceofHearts - July 18, 2008 12:00 AM (GMT)
Sorting and searching my own wishlist is important because otherwise how can I find and entry to delete to to know if it is already on the wishlist
wss4 - July 18, 2008 01:22 AM (GMT)
I have started a wishlist on GoodReads. I still take books off of Cliff's when I get them, but I have not added any new ones since he is shutting down. I tried to mess with my BC wishlist, but just found it to be too much hassle.
So now all of my new wishes just get listed on GoodReads.

Are you talking about on BC because the last I heard was that non-winged members won't be able to search wishes? Has this changed?
If you are talking about on a different site, please explain how they can find out what you have on your wishlist without going to your specific wishlist. Are you saying that they are going to search all of the wishes on goodreads/bookmooch/pbs and hope they see a name they recognize as a BC member and then invite you to the ray by going back to BC and sending a pm?
chambejd - July 18, 2008 01:46 AM (GMT)
I guess I didn't make my point clear. I'll try to explain better. If you take your wishlist to a separate site, the only people that are going to see it are those that are going to want to look specifically at your wishlist and those people are going to probably want to look at your entire wishlist (for exchanges or because they specifically want to give/send a rabck to you, etc), not just look to see if you have a specific book wishlisted. Those same people that are going to look at your wishlist on a separate site can also do the same thing on BC by going to your profile and clicking wishlist. At least on BC, your wishlist will still be searchable by those with wings.
I know if I'm going to rabck something, I'm not going to go to five different sites to check everyone's wishlists...I'll look at BC and see who wants it. It just seems that to move it to a different site drastically reduces the people that will see your wishlist.

Good Point
I guess I can always ask someone with wings to search for me
SciFisstrs - July 18, 2008 08:06 AM (GMT)
I just noticed the link to the wishlist. Geez I had to do a lot of fixing up. Seems like they have the name of the book and author right but when you check on the isbn it's all wrong. Not all of it but most of it.
I'm still not done yet.
zzz - July 18, 2008 11:10 AM (GMT)
I'm also adding books on my Goodreads wish list (just in case) but also on Cliff's and on BC.
Maybe BookMooch would be smart move since you'll have chance to be informed if something from your wish list is available for grabbing
chambejd - July 18, 2008 12:02 PM (GMT)
Oh!!! Look what I just noticed!!
If you "global overview" a book you are able to see all the wishes for that book without wings.
zzz - July 18, 2008 12:05 PM (GMT)
does non-winged member has "Who's Wishing for this book" under "global overview"?

Yes, I have it and I am not winged. This is what I see:
Wishes for this Book: 18 (See All)
Of course, the ISBNs will have to match up. There will be some people's wishes that you probably wouldn't see because they may have put in a different ISBN or the ISBN that gets autofilled isn't the same as the book that you are looking at.

Yes I add the majority of m wishes to BookMooch as well. In fact I get a lot of my wishes fulfilled by BookMooch, but of course I check my wishlist many times a day. lol
Guess I should clean up and use my Bookcrossing wishlist but it seems like such a big job. It was such a mess after the move over from Cliff's.
chambejd - July 18, 2008 02:15 PM (GMT)
Yeah, my BC wishlist was such a mess too. I just went through it yesterday and deleted all the wrong ISBNs that they pulled for the ones with the wrong cover art and saved them with no ISBN and then most of them automatically found the right picture, luckily.

When you are on the JE page of any book look over to the right by the title and picture and you will see a link that says Global Overview for this book right above Browse Booksellers and Add to Wishlist.
Just click on that and you will come to the Global Overview page.
TwiggySC1973 - July 18, 2008 03:12 PM (GMT)
Oh ok, great for sharing that. That will work too!

cool, I didn't know you could do that, I'll have to take a closer look at it and get mine fixed around.
I've been updating my Cliff's list, do we know if they are going to re-pull from Cliff's, or is what we see what we get right now and we need to fix it?

I'm pretty sure they said they weren't going to re-pull.
I went through and updated mine a while back and now that I've been using it for a bit, I really like it. Too bad about search/sort being a plus function though...that seems like pretty basic functionality if they're going to put the wishlist on the site.

From what I've heard, that upload from cliff to BC was a one-time thing so the way your wishlist is right now on BC is how it's going to stay. Unless you start updating it there. :)
I got my wishlist straightened up when this thing was on Beta, though some covers just refuse to show even with correct ISBNs... very annoying. But, you know, shouldn't complain since on Cliff's we didn't see covers at all!
Amberkatze - July 18, 2008 03:51 PM (GMT)
I use Bookmooch. I find it easy to use and I don't care if I can mooch books or not but I can edit and update my wishlist easily.
There is too much typing involved in using Cliff's and I find the site can be unreliable...also it is supposed to be closing.
BC wishlist is just a waste of time and with all the rubbish going on there at the moment I can't be bothered.
Goodreads hasn't got a wishlist feature but you can make your own category...although it is a little time consuming and Bookmooch is quicker.
The quickest wishlist is of course Amazon...and they recommend books to you based on what you buy and add to your lists. Also if you only have an Amazon wishlist and people buy things off it they automatically disappear which means no doubles...doesn't work so well for me being in Europe but if I was in the States I would most likely just use Amazon.
Daelith - July 18, 2008 04:37 PM (GMT)
I'm keeping mine updated at Cliff's until it's gone and I've got the one at BC. Also took the time to make one at goodreads. Best thing I've done, more for myself, was copy my Cliff's list and put in Excel format that way I can sort it by category then author. Got frustrated last time I was at a used book store and kept having to go from one area to another. Bam-Bam did too cause just as soon as he got comfortable, I'd move again and I'd get this long suffering sigh as he heaved himself up to follow. :giggle:
Plus I figured out how to upload the Excel list to Zoho.com.

Great. Solves my problem. Thanks!!
and I can look at other people's wishlists. So the exchanges will be okay
SciFisstrs - July 19, 2008 04:46 AM (GMT)
Well I just finshed going through that BC wishlist. 2 days it took me. I did find that Global overview and used it. Yet again I run into a problem. A book that is registerd to several people I tried to click on wishes for the book and it had 0. Shouldn't have at least 1, mine?
I'm wondering if this is the winged member feature?
Still can't find all images for books, even with the right isbn
Anyways I put a little note on my BC profile and have a link to my other wishlist, as well as cliff's. I also flipped the links on my siggy here. The link to wishlist is to the other one. But still have the BC wishlist at bottom of siggy.
Maybe for Christmas Matt and can get wings just to see what all we are missing. Nothing else we can do I guess
caligula03 - July 20, 2008 07:02 PM (GMT)
I transferred mine to my website and plan to keep it there even though I have wings. I don't like the way BC has implemented the wishlist.
lexilewords - July 20, 2008 10:04 PM (GMT)
i've always relied upon my Amazon wishlist more then my Cliff's one. Its easier for me to sort through and I like the ability to divide my books according to genre.
giz-angel - July 21, 2008 08:30 AM (GMT)
I;m trying to keep my cliffs wishlist and BC wishlist up to date - I checked them yesterday and updated the BC one from cliffs.
KathyB - July 21, 2008 10:08 AM (GMT)
I think I will just move mine over to my own website. That way I will be able to add notes if I want. A lot of times I will read a book and then want to listen to the audio also. This way, I can have an audios only list and a book list too.
Kiri - July 21, 2008 10:57 AM (GMT)
I went and made a split excel sheet via google docs. it is *distinctly* a work in progress, but I am keeping track of my rays, rings, and etc via it too. you can reach it via my BC page is anyone is interested.
Edit: or actually that second link in my sig there

:shedevil: I get so sick of this. I am trying to add some new books I had add on amazon to bookcrossing but guess what... I can't. Nobody has registered those so this means I can't wish for them.
Tried 3 books just now but al 3 are not registered on BC.
Ha, Make that 4
Okay 6 out of 8 I could not add.

Hey, Amber - I'm in Europe and I use amazon.co.uk. You could also use .de if you read in German much. I think the wishlists work pretty much the same way as the .com site, but there's no problem with customs and the shipping is cheaper.
The thing to be careful of is that amazon.co.uk works great for books, cds, and dvds, but they seem unwilling to ship anything else (housewares, etc) outside the British Isles. But since we're talking about books here... :reading:

So how did you add them? I was under the impression that the only way to add a book was to search for it, then hit the add to wishlist button when you find it. How did you add it, if it is not registered on someone else's shelf already?
