Title: Atonement

SciFisstrs - July 3, 2008 05:34 AM (GMT)
This is a cross post that I had .

I have a question about a book. Has anyone read Atonement ? Megan and I just watched the movie the other night and we both felt that it was missing something. Meg said I guess there is more in the book, there is a book? Yeah I said but I did not read it. Nor do I want to now that I seen the movie.

Can anyone tell me if there is more in the book, and what did we miss?

Haven't read yet or seen it, but didn't the movie have Keira Knightley in it? Reason enough to hate it, imho.

I read the book, but haven't seen the movie so I can't help with comparisons.

I read the book then saw the movie, and I think the movie worked for me because I read the book first.

most of the book deals with characters' inner thoughts, which can be difficult to bring to the screen and might be what you felt was missing.

this article at The Onion AV Club puts it better (and in a few more words)

I tried to read the book. I got to like page 10 and really just didn't know what the words even SAID. I'm a pretty smart person, but that book made me feel stupid. LOL. I have the movie here to watch one day ;)

I loved the book though and want to see the film. Will have to be when DH isn't about though - I doubt he would watch it!

I must agree with you on Keira Knightley she doesn't look right. Something about her face is off and I think her teeth are too big for her mouth. So when she says her words it looks like she has difficulty expressing. But again it's only my opinion.

Her acting isn't that great either. Same character she plays.

I read the article and agree with some of the stuff it says. After what everyone says I don't think I would of liked the book. I thought there was too much emphasis on different things that I didn't think that mattered. But that's just my opinion

I'm still interested on what everyone thinks after they watch the movie and read the book.

I haven't read the book, but I watched the film last night and absolutely loved it...Best film I've watched since Stardust...I'm also not a Knightley fan, but I thought she was quite good in this. James Mcevoy was yummy..if shorter than I'd thought.
I'm in two minds about Mcewan's work. I do think he can spend a bit too much time proving his intellectual superiority to the reader, but I really, really liked this film.
