The book appears to be divided into sections by year so will do one thread on each decade.

BEWARE - These threads wll almost certainly contain spoilers - However I would request that if your comment refers to a later part of the book that you make this very clear - perhaps putting the comments in white, so only those who want to will read them :)

I read this book as part of a bookring and did not reread it for this readalong, so I'm only going to comment here in the last thread. I can't remember exactly where in the book different things happened...

I thought the middle section of the book was really disappointing -- it jumped so quickly over years and years and just gave the most basic outline of what happened -- no chance for character development at all.

Overall, I found most of the characters extremely distant and hard to relate to. They seemed to constantly do things that made no sense or were just silly.

I'm interested to hear others' comments.

I am exactely in this middle part and I'm getting the same idea.

Right now I'm leaving work to do some more reading at home. I'll be back to discuss further.

I did not understand where the son's hatred for his dad came from.

Even though you are right and I did not like one character, I could not stop reading. I read it so quickly. Now I have a TC book, much smaller but it has already taken me 4 days instead of the 2 I needed for Memory Keeper

I do not mind not liking characters but I want to know how they are like they are, how they became that way. I also thought her behavior weird and especially how her son reacted toward it. Not! angry at his dad instead .

I don't understand it either, Marlene.

Just finished the book. I liked it overall.

Finished it last night and I'm in the process of watching the movie that was on Lifetime back in April. Spoiler in white I really hated the fact that David died before he could tell Norah about Phoebe. It was just such a cop out for the author. But I was glad that Caroline came to Norah about her daughter, she just should have came to her so much sooner.

Overall I liked the book, but as others have said I found all the characters quite unlikeable. But prehaps in life a lot of people aren't likeable...
I guess it's difficult for us to appreciate now, what would make David make such a decision, but perhaps it was more understandable at the time?
I'm not sure if Caroline was very brave, of everyone at least she stood by Phoebe and tried to make a better life for her, or whether her motivation was purely selfish. Why Paul felt so evil about his father i don't know???

I noticed in the readers guide a comment that photography was used as a metaphor through the book..this unfortunately passed me by..You have to be a lot less subtle to get a metaphor over to Sunny!!
Agree with Twiggy about the cop out!

I watched the movie last night, it followed somewhat with the book. A lot of circumstances were changed like David's death ( I won't say how in case someone wants to watch). Even some of the dialogue was changed like David's remark about Paul not being able to practice his guitar after the stealing cheese incident; in the movie the mother has the line of "you think there's no consequences of what you did and things can go back the same?" They left out the whole West Virginia incident from the movie. To me it was just as choppy as the book. I didn't like it.

Metaphor? I guess I'm too slow on that too... :giggle:

I didn't even know there was a movie! Guess I'll look for its torrent...

:ditto2:
Unlikeable characters who did silly things all the time, missing years ... and yet I kind of liked the book. Probably after hearing a lot about it, my hopes were too high.
And yeah, it really annoyed me when David died too. A real cop-out.
