The book appears to be divided into sections by year so will do one thread on each.
decade
BEWARE - These threads wll almost certainly contain spoilers - However I would request that if your comment refers to a later part of the book that you make this very clear - perhaps putting the comments in white, so only those who want to will read them :)

I just read 9 pages last night after midnight it looks to be good.

Marlene - June 1, 2008 08:10 PM (GMT)
well I've read about 78 pages and have come to chapter called 1970 so I think I can talk about the book now.

Not that much to say though.
I find the writing interesting although sometimes a bit slow.
Before reading I had no clue what this book was about. I love to be surprised. To be honest when i discovered what was happening, spoiler-> -> >> dad pretends that one baby dies, how boring have read about that so many times I was a bit disappointed but I think it could be a great story.

so far I am enjoying myself.
do i need to add spoilers if i write about the pages we have agreed on?
because I was not sure I decided to make some text white.

I'm into the late 1970's so far..

Finding it quite a quick read, but still enjoyable. Am interested to see how it is all going to turn out!

Marlene - June 2, 2008 12:27 PM (GMT)
yep me too camis.
I am at page 251 now. Really enjoying it and did not expect to read it so fast.
Very small print and 400 pages but last night I could not stop reading.

aargh i have to start doing something.
vacuum for instance.
In an hour some one comes to help me trim a tree in my garden. :pirate:

I'm not reading it as fast as you guys, just finished the 1960's. I thought it was interesting at the beginning, but the end of the decade really got slow for me. If I have some spare time at work today, I'll start the 1970's there...

I just started it tonight and am up to 1965 I think. Like Marlene said, it has been done before, but I'm still enjoying it. As far as I've notice, we don't know the doctor's name? Makes him seem even more distant than he is.

What, the dad? David Henry.

camis - June 3, 2008 12:42 PM (GMT)
Also, does it remind anyone else of The Girls? I just thought the writing style ws very similar

VeganMedusa - June 3, 2008 12:44 PM (GMT)
Umm, it's 12.41am? That's all I've got as an excuse. :giggle:
Maybe the chapters focussed on the nurse call him by his name, but the ones focussed on Norah don't? I don't know. I just remember him being called "the doctor" a lot. I'm going to bed!

Yeah I've gone through the 60s and just slightly in the 70s. I just don't get David Henry. He can't pretend to be sad even though he's carrying this big burden of lying about the child.

I finished the 1960s section so I thought I'd pop over here.

First of all, I expected a bit more from the sleeper hit of last year. I haven't read even half the book, granted, but I'm still expecting to be awed. Which I haven't been so far. It's a nice read, with some pretty good writing, but I found myself drifting in some places. I'm trying to understand David's motivation for doing what he did but even with his sister having had the health problems she did, I really can't even begin to forgive him for what he did.

But I'm more confused about Caroline and her storyline. First, the fact she got scared away from an institution by seeing someone getting a haircut. Ms. Edwards... you might have gone for something a little less... huh? Because, despite such institutions not being the most perfect of places, especially in the 60s, I would have found it more believable if Caroline had been scared away by neglect or something else more impressive than someone in a nightshirt getting a haircut.

Also, maybe it's my completely unromantic self speaking, but a guy meets you once and then chases after you for a year? I'm finding that little event a bit hard to bite, but, who knows, maybe love at first sight was more common in 1965...

I'd have also loved to know a bit more about what happened to Caroline and Phoebe in between her running away with the baby and the place we start in 1965, with her already employed. I guess I'm a bit of a fan of show, not just tell, and I think it's a bit of a easy way out to gloss over details like that. The initial struggles strike me as very important and we only learn of them on occasion, when Caroline conjures up a memory or two. Although this works well in some cases, I'd rather have followed this initial journey more closely. Maybe that's just me.

Despite this, I'm enjoying the book. But it's a slow read (doesn't help I'm also trying to read a 500+ page tome I owe from a swap) so it may take me a while to catch up to you girls (and boys?).

I just reached 1970 last night. I like the book, but at the same time am kind of underwhelmed so I have to force myself to pick it up now and then.
I agree with most of what you just said, Xeyra - about the missing time and the love at first sight. It's so common in movies and it always makes me retch - it's so easy to love at first sight, but once you have to hear him fart and burp and whatnot, that's when you find out if it's real.

I'm moving really slowly on this one...which isn't usually a good thing for me.

Like others have said, so far I'm underwhelmed. It reminds me of 'The Girls' too Camis, but I actually enjoyed that a whole lot more.
I can't really think of much to say about what I've read so far. I'm finiding all 3 lead characters slightly irritating, as I don't understand their motivation at all..Not sure about this novel at all at this stage ( Just finished 60's)
And speak for yourself Xeya - I have to fight off men who've met me once and then follow me around!!
