Title: A List of "Relay Killers"

shaunesay - January 28, 2007 09:55 PM (GMT)
The other list that I linked to is obviously not available, so help me out by posting here what titles/authors you consider relay killers. Also let me know what genre it should be included in.

A Relay Killer is a title that was at one point SO popular that most people already have a copy of it (or multiple!) and so most people won't choose to steal it in a swap. If you really want to use it for something, try it in a VBB, but don't be surprised if you end up having to replace it, because everyone that might want it probably already has it.

I'll compile the list here in the first thread as you post, and then link it to my site again. Thanks!

Fiction and Literature
John Grisham
Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood
The Lovely Bones

Mystery and Thriller
Cat Who ... - by Lilian Jackson Braun, all except newest
John Grisham
The DaVinci Code - Dan Brown

I wasn't sure where to put it, but since it was talkin' about books, I thought book talk was a good place ta start! ;)

So we can move it wherever, if we want it!

For the paranormal swaps and relays, I'd say most of the older Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles.

And cheesy, this might be good in the relay section, but it'd also be appropriate for the swap section as well. So possibly pin it in both places?

And also VBB's and exchanges maybe?

cheesygiraffe - January 28, 2007 10:02 PM (GMT)
Wow so many places it needs to be. I opened a can of worms didn't I? :P

CheriePie - January 28, 2007 10:04 PM (GMT)
Yeah, it's appropriate for nearly all of the games' sub-forums. So I suggest we start building it here and then decide what to do.

Too bad that we can't have the messages linked somehow though so that if we did post it as pinned in all those places, we'd just have to update it once and it'd be reflected in all places.

AlterEgoZoe - January 29, 2007 12:14 AM (GMT)
Can I add one? Anything by VC Andrews seem to go out the window...

Maybe we should make a note too that it's not that these books are bad (despite the name!) just that more than likely everyone who's wanted to read them already has. I know when I first started playing here I was concerned with inadvertantly offering up a "bad book"

Snow Waltz in Cedar Bend

Isn't it SLOW not SNOW ?

caseyw - January 29, 2007 03:07 PM (GMT)
Yep it is Slow not Snow. I fixed it. Thanks for pointing it out.

alsgal - January 30, 2007 12:36 AM (GMT)
Can we pin this to the top of the Relays forum?

cheesygiraffe - January 30, 2007 12:41 AM (GMT)
We're going to I promise. Once we sort out how to pin it to all the places it's applicable.

cheesygiraffe - January 30, 2007 12:44 AM (GMT)
Okay I went ahead and pinned it. ;)

I said that in my first post silly! :P

Here's a link to the Top 100 Registered Books over at Bookcrossing.com:
Top Registered

That is a pretty good outline of books that are available in abundance and are not likely to be popular in swaps/relays!

Y'know, I've just discovered Anne McCaffrey and I'm trying to collect her Dragonriders of Pern series, so if anyone needs to post something from that collection I'll probably snap it up pretty quick! :D

Curious: does Phillippa Gregory's popularity brand her historical fiction books relay/swap killers, too?

I wouldn't think so, but I'd wait for some other input besides mine.

You know one thing I use to determine.... if a book goes to Mass Market then it'll more easily become a relay killer because at the low price point, it becomes even more of a staple on people's shelves than it would be otherwise. I'm not sure any of Philippa Gregory's books have went to Mass Market, plus I know a lot of people are still reading them, or just now reading them, so for this specific one, I'd be inclined to say no, but I"m curious about the justifications others would use here.

and with chick lit. Everybody has read the Shopaholic books and Devil wears prada, and if not, they probably don't want to right?

I don't think so.... her books are still very popular and lots of people haven't read them yet.... I know they always get snapped right up on BookMooch!

I don't think so either. I have a few but haven't read all of her's. And I know many are on current wishlists!

I would agree with that too. Besides she has several newer ones out that I know would be tres popular! ;)

I would think it might depend on which particular book(s) you're referring to. I would suspect The Other Boleyn Girl has probably made the rounds for the most part (although the movie might generate new interest???), but some of the lesser-known or newer ones still seem appealing to a lot of people.
