Title: Sci-Fi-Fantasy reading group: NEW POLL
Description: Choice between two
GateGypsy - May 6, 2008 10:51 PM (GMT)
OK, as Shawnie suggested, Here's a new poll. I know there were several people who said they'd read one of several books, and when the numbers started adding up, I found it difficult to determine which books were truly preferred.
There were several people who said they would not participate if we read Golden Compass. Some who said they specifically wanted to read that book. Some who suggested Triffids were worth reading about... but I'm trying to get an idea of how many will join us now...
Please vote for one book, the one you want to participate in discussion with the post, the one you figure you already have or can reasonably easily get your hands on. Please also post, once you've voted, to tell me which you voted for and/or why, so I can get an idea of how many people may or may not be participating this time around.
Sorry to seem so indecisive or disorganised. It's my first time doing anything like this! Bear with me!

I voted for Golden Compass (although I prefer Northern Lights ) because I've already read the triffids (on a lot of sites I use Triffid as my screen name, and we have a cat called Triffid!).

Wow, I take it you liked the book, then?
I like the title "Northern Lights" better, too -- but that's not what it says on my silly movie-tie-in version. Is this kindof like when they published Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the US under the title Sorcerer's Stone?
Thanks for putting in your word, VeganMedusa. I really appreciate your patience with me while I try to sort myself out in this!

Yup! :D And the TV series scared me to death as a kid (haven't seen the movie).

I voted for Golden Compass, because I've read it, and thought it was interesting, and have the movie here to watch too.
I'm fine either way though, Triffids sounds a little iffy to me, but I'm willing to give it a try. ;)

I voted for Golden Compass (Northern Lights) because I do need to re-read it so I can continue the series and I have a copy (in Portuguese).

My reading has slowed down considerably this year (working on the dissertation), but I'd like to participate in a discussion. Sadly since my reading time has taken a drastic cut, I didn't have time to read the previous book.
I don't have a copy of nor have I read (nor have time to read) the Triffids book.
I have read and loved The Golden Compass (heck, I've published on the trilogy), so I wouldn't need to spend time reading it since I'm really familiar with it. Thus I could participate in the discussion with minimal time-consumingness. (Yeah, I know that's not a word)

I really want to read the Triffids, but I have a copy of the Compass that I've never been able to get into. Maybe having a reading group discussion (and solid goals) would make me read it...
I would totally join the group if we could do this book... Not trying to be exclusive, but sometimes I'm just not a Sci-Fi/Fantasy girl...
Although I feel like I need to get into some good series fantasy (Mary Stewart Arthurian series and a few other Arthurian fantasy type books are on my shelf begging for a chance to be read)...
The Compass might be a good start, LOL.

I just got the audiobook digitally from the library for Compass/Northern Lights, so maybe it'll help me get into it.
:-)

Sorry, Giz, looks like the overwhelming vote is for Northern Lights/Golden Compass!
The popular vote looks to be pointing at Pullman's book, so if everyone's ok with that, then, Shaunie, what happens next?
Xeyra - May 10, 2008 08:08 AM (GMT)
Giz, you can still participate in the discussion since you read the book previously and, you know, may have a lot of things to say about it, even if they're negative. :)

I totally don't mind at all - it's cool cos I do really have so much TBR so it would be mad to keep buying new books too. I am looking forward to see what you all think of Compass. :)

We start reading!
And see if everyone that wants to has access to a copy, or if people are willing to share, etc.
I'll put up some discussion threads in June sometime, so we can start gabbing!
I'll post a thread here in a sec that that's our official choice and see about copy scheduling. :)
