Description: Does anyone have links?
giz-angel - May 3, 2008 07:39 AM (GMT)
I remember someone - BrynSC? had a web page with how to put links and scrolling boxes etc = I had it book marked on my old PC but now I wanted to pass it to someone else I can't find it grrrrr
Any ideas?

Will look this thread very carefully - my profile looks pathetic :(

I used to have someone's page bookmarked too, but our computer died and I've never been able to find it again.
I can't remember what your profile looks like zzz, but if it helps, your spotted dick looks awesome.

I spent a lot of time hunting up useful information on how to gussy up my bookshelf... but my laptop where all the information and links were stored died, too!
The link wss4 provided is a good place to start, indeed, with basic html... of course, if you know how to bold, etc, on here with bb code, it's very similar in HTML, except html uses <> parenthesis instead of []
However, I can tell you these things...
there's a bookcrosser named [URL=http://www.bookcrossing.com/sendmessage/Jinglefish]JingleFish
[/URL] who can tell you how to get scrolling text across your page...
I have a series of scrollboxes for lists of books I have, or books I've read, or bookrings I'm signed up for, on my page. Their format is as follows:
<select name="scrollable" size="3"onclick="window.location.href='http://'+this.options[this.selectedIndex].value+'';">
<option value="www.bookcrossing.com/journal/3146170/">The Book of Proper Names by Amelie Nothomb</option></select>
Ok, so there's only one book given in the example, but that's ok. For every other book you want to enter, just start another line with <option value="URL"> You don't have to have a URL to put in -- it can be left blank or be linked to a wikipedia page instead of a bookcrossing journal (I do that sometimes when it's a book I haven't read yet), but if there is a bookcrossing journal page listed there, or any other viable URL, then when the person views the box on the bookshelf, and clicks on the name of the book visible in the box, then the journal page will be automatically opened. When you're done with the box, close it with the </select> It's worth mentioning that in there it says size=3 <-- that size is changeable, just make the number bigger or smaller as suits you, or your bookshelf. This scrollbox is pretty basic, and I can't tell you much more about the html because it was simply given to me by a very helpful and generous bookcrosser. (sorry, I just woke up -- if this didn't make much sense, just go look at my bookshelf and if these books and links are the kind you're interested in sharing with your friend, I can PM her or give you more info later.)
I also head up each new little box with a line like this:
<font color=FF0080><b><u>Bookrings/rays Currently In My Possession:</u></b></font>
just so people who what on earth I'm listing in the little box. That colour code came from the awesome page I used to have bookmarked.
I used to have a great HTML colour list, and other pages... I'll see if I can hunt them up again and post them in here after work today or maybe tomorrow.

On Bookrelay I had a thread about how to do cool HTML stuff for your shelf but that's gone ... boo hoo

| They've added an Edit option! Yay! It allows you to change the title to say pending if you want without disrupting the cover because the listing is attached to a ISBN. Of course, this doesn't help previous screwed up books, which will have to be added again (and only then edited to mention its pending status). |

Think you have the wrong thread Xey cos that makes NO sense here

I'm not sure that any of these have anything cool or unusual, but they're the ones I have bookmarked:
ComputerHope.comWebSpawner.comhtmlgoodies.comWebmonkeyVisiBone(With all these links, you'd think my shelf would be way cooler than it is.....)
CheriePie - May 4, 2008 01:11 AM (GMT)
Somewhere in this forum, I gave instructions to Ap about how to add a background. Don't feel up to hunting it down though (nor being coherent enough to explain it all again)... perhaps someone else might, or maybe Ap bookmarked it. :erm:
ETA - Lazy man's way... pull up
my shelf and View HTML and copy all my code. I use a lot of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for the link colors and such, but the scroll boxes are straight HTML.

I honestly thought the Spotted Dick was a joke. And then today I'm reading along in A.S. Byatt's 'The Virgin in the Garden' and there it was!
"...He liked crude jokes -- would suddenly whip a hot teaspoon out of a scalding cup of tea and sting Daniel's hand with it, would discover, grossly, half-crowns and florins in his helpings of SPOTTED DICK, perform a lengthy........"
LOLOLOLOL!

I've done that and was completely lost. There are 13 pages of codes
Will try to locate thread where your instructions might be...
HoserLauren - May 5, 2008 12:20 AM (GMT)
If you pull up code and search for profilebio, I believe it's the long line of code after that.

Brynn's page actually doesn't exist anymore I don't think, they moved a couple years ago and she's never really gotten back into bookcrossing, after some rough RL times. I did catch her on IM probably a couple months ago and it sounded like things were going pretty good for her, so that was a relief at least, but I'm guessing she may not be coming back to BC, different life focus and all. It happens. *shrug*

Really? Wow that's a lot of code :giggle:
I would point people to my profile but I'm actually hosting my profile on my website because Bookcrossing wouldn't let me do what I wanted to do.

So THAT'S where that post went! I was looking all over for it in the thread I meant to post this and couldn't find it!

tqd has some instructions for boxes/lists - there's a link on her bookshelf.
This site is how I first started to learn html & it has a great colour chart.
