Title: What is the longes series you have read?

Marlene - May 1, 2008 06:59 PM (GMT)
Or should I say which?

I ask cause yesterday I was talking about the North Americans series and I think it contains of 9 books, and I was saying I do not read so many books of one series, but then I realised that was wrong.

There was one series I read all books of and it was much more than 9 books.

Jalna by Mazo de La Roche.
This contains of 16 novels and I read all of them I guess in 2003/2004

What about you?
(I might even forget a series now)

TwiggySC1973 - May 1, 2008 08:07 PM (GMT)

needmorezoloft - May 1, 2008 08:13 PM (GMT)
I've read I think up to 10.. or 11 in the Lemmony Snicket series, I think it has 13.

That's the most I've read of a long series, the others are

The Sookie Stackhouse Series (reading book 7 now)
and Harry Potter (I've read all 7)

Daelith - May 1, 2008 08:32 PM (GMT)
Without taxing my little brain to figure this out, I'm going to guess that Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series is the series I've read the most. I've got quite a collection of others going though. Maybe if I'd quite goofing off on line and go read I could get through more of them. :P

Amberkatze - May 1, 2008 08:38 PM (GMT)
Sweep series by Cate Tiernan was 15 books in total....

I think the Dark Hunter books by Sherrilyn Kenyon must be at least 12 books...

Anita Blake series by Laurell Hamilton is 15? I think I am up to book 9...

I am sure there are more if I think about it ;)

Oh and I have read the Alex Cross books too!

freelunch - May 1, 2008 08:53 PM (GMT)
the Virgin New Adventures series totals 84 books - I have them all and I've read the first 48...

...but it may not be the kind of series Marlene has in mind :)

My longest so far has been "The Wheel of Time" by Robert Jordan. 11 books all around 1000 pages long. Unfortunately, he died last year and the last book was not finished. I have read where he left very detailed notes and outlines and was dictating story plots and twists and turns up to the time of his death. He had a very rare disorder and he knew it was terminal. I look forward to the last book of the series and hope that the person who puts it all together captures Jordan's sense of humor and drama that have made this series one that I have loved for years.

I would know a new book was coming out and I'd start listening to the audiobooks to refresh my memory. SO when the last volume comes out - for a couple of months before that I will be MIA while I re-listen or read the whole series in preparation for the grand finale.

cheesygiraffe - May 1, 2008 09:42 PM (GMT)
The J. D. Robb, pseudonym for Nora Roberts, In Death futuristic mystery series. I've read all 26 of them. The 27th comes out in November. :o

That was going to be my response. I think it was late last year when I was on Amazon that I realized how many books there were in that series. I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT! I have read each and every one as they have come out.

Other than that, I stuck with Fearless (Francine Pascal, YA) for about 15 books. Then they changed the girl on the cover and the stories got all crazy. And I'm up to Book 10 of the Dresden Files.

Lemonitsa - May 2, 2008 12:39 AM (GMT)
already mentioned in previous posts:
Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time
Harry Potter
Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunters
(I'm sure there are more but my brain doesn't want to work)

but the longest one I have read is 21 books, and it is The New Jedi Order, a Star Wars series. It's one continuous story, not stand-alones. If you don't read them in order you'll get really mixed up (and severely spoiled.... and upset if you're a fan)

lexilewords - May 2, 2008 12:56 PM (GMT)
I think Anne McCaffrey's Pern series...somewhere over 15 books I think. The 12 Kingdoms by Fuyumi Ono, its 11 books + a short story long, I've read books 1 and 2 as they are the only English Translated officials out. Full Metal Panic! novels I've read 1-2, 7-8 I think out of 10 or so volumes. 1-2 is officially translated while 7-8 was fan translated...

or in non-english there's my Ouke no Monshou (The Royal Crest) by Chieko Hosokawa...that's over 72 volumes long, but its a manga XD

Tribefan - May 2, 2008 01:29 PM (GMT)
Dragonlace when I was young... 53 books! :o

Daelith - May 2, 2008 01:41 PM (GMT)
I forgot about the Anita Blake series. I've read through Incubus Dreams and Micah. How many is that? 13?! Called it quits with that series after those.

I read the first 6 of the Wheel of Time series. I have #7 but just can't seem to get into it.

Stephanie Plum series - 15 of those. The 13 of the original series and 2 of the holiday specials.

Read all the Harry Potter books.

All 8 of the Callahan Garrity mysteries by Kathy Hogan Trocheck
All the Molly Bearpaw and Mitch Bushyhead mysteries by Jean Hager - 9 total of those

A lot of Anne McCaffrey's Pern series too. I haven't cared as much for them since her son took over writing.

ladiibbug - May 2, 2008 04:22 PM (GMT)
Great topic, Marlene!

I've read all 11 books in Robert Crais's Elvis Cole/Joe Pike PI series. #12 comes out this July. Plus I've read all 3 of his stand-alones.

In the last few months, I've read 1-10 in Lora Leigh's paranormal Breed series.

And 1-11 in Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Better get #12 at the library soon!! :rofl:

I'm watching the calendar for June 6 for Phury's story, #6 in J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series ... Lover Enshrined ... anxious to see what "the boys" will be up to next! :ph34r: :kiss: :blush:

My very favorite series is by Italian author Andrea Camilleri: His Police Inspector Salvo Montalbano series ... I've read 1-8, with 9 and 10 coming out this year.

fantasy221 - May 2, 2008 05:29 PM (GMT)
The Baby-Sitter's club when I was a kid! The series was well into the 100's when I finally stopped! :lol:

Xeyra - May 2, 2008 06:12 PM (GMT)
A portuguese series of teen adventure books roughly translated to 'An Adventure', of which I read around 40 books, though the series continues even now.

msjoanna - May 2, 2008 06:23 PM (GMT)
I think I'm not much of a series reader...

I read a lot of Sweet Valley High books when I was younger; also Babysitter's Club.

Since then:
--Harry Potter: all 7
--Clan of the Cave Bear, etc. by Jean M. Auel: all 5
--Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: 4
--People of the Wolf, etc.: a couple, then got bored

I've now started the Ian Rainkin Inspector Rebus series, but I've only read the first one so far.

I've also started the Georgia Nicolson books, but I think I've only read the first two of those.

I've also read the first Dresden Files book and have the second headed my way soon.

Interesting topic.

TwiggySC1973 - May 12, 2008 05:18 PM (GMT)
I had forgotten Babysitter's Club. Loved those books!

Breeze - May 12, 2008 05:48 PM (GMT)
Initially I was going to say Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone at a total of 18 (with 2 on TBR).

The posts here reminded me of the Clan of the Cave Bear, Babysitter's Club and Sweet Valley High, Harry Potter and, it just came to me, Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books!

oooohhhh! I've read all these too, plus all of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series, not to mention Raymond Fiest, Piers Anthony Xanth series... Gosh, I read so many Fantasy Series when I was younger... :shrug: :sigh: Ahh, the good old days when all I had to do was read!!! :cry:

Working on Darkover now... up to #5, but I have all (35) of them on my TBR pile! Plan to finish #5 today... :thumbsup: :reading: :read:

Is Terry Pratchett's Discworlds considered a series? It is to me!

meshe - May 12, 2008 08:58 PM (GMT)
How about the In Death books by j.d.robb? I'm not sure how many of them I've read, but there are quite a few of them.

TwiggySC1973 - May 12, 2008 09:11 PM (GMT)
I have Jack Higgins Sean Dillion series TBR (14 books) and I've read one so far.

A few years ago, I spent a few months reading the entire Dune series cover to cover. It's one of the true epics of science fiction, and while there were about 1500 pages that could have been edited out, the good parts more than made up for the drag. I'm still puzzling over Chapterhouse Dune to this day (in a good way) :)

My mom discovered the JD Robb "in death" books sometime last year and has been devouring them ever since. She's held on to all of them, so I might give it a try. Always up for a good series!

ramson - May 13, 2008 03:53 AM (GMT)
I am currently reading #15 of the 16 written already (not sure how long this one will go on) of the Penn Dutch Inn Series featuring Magdelena Yoder by Tamar Myers. (I've also read the first five out of fourteen of her Den of Antiquity series featuring Abigail Timberlake.)

I've read thirteen of the fourteen Catering mysteries featuring Goldie Schultz by Diane Mott Davidson.

I've read eight of the ten Hannah Swensen cookie mysteries by JoAnne Fluke.

I've read seven of the eight Chocolate Shop mysteries featuring Lee McKinney by Joanna Carl.

I've read six of the seven Blackbird Sisters mysteries by Nancy Martin.

I've read six of the ten (or is it 11 now?) Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot.

I've read five of the nine Tea Shop mysteries by Laura Childs.

Also read the first five of six Bubble Yablonsky books by Sarah Strohmeyer.

I have alot of other series with fewer books read in them. Since I am not swapping anymore I don't have any books owed. (Used to only use TBR in the swaps so I always knew what I needed to read next.) Its a bit daunting to look at the shelves and boxes of books to figure out what to need next so just recently I decided my new goal is to complete all the books belonging to a series that I have in my possession that I can before starting any more new series. (But that Jaine Austin series by Laura Levine is really, really calling to me...)

Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series 15 books so far.

That is what my longest series was. Scarpetta books and I'm up to Blowfly now. I didn't like the last book. Than thinking that was it and I moved it to greater books. But when she wrote Blowfly I thought what the hell? I'll go fer again :lol:

Marlene - May 13, 2008 12:42 PM (GMT)
I should see on Google which is the longest book series.
anyone knows?

Yes there are those small thin books but you also have series where each book is 1000 pages. :ph34r:

so does that count or is it per book? :)

elsi - May 13, 2008 12:45 PM (GMT)
Hmmm....

When younger I read many of the Nancy Drew series -- 56 books in the original series, but I think I stopped reading somewhere around book 44. Since 1979, new books have been released, bringing the series total to 175! (Do I see a challenge to track down and read all the Nancy Drew books?)

I also read a lot of the Bobbsey Twins -- the original series contained 25 books and now goes to 72. Looking at publication dates, I probably only read 16 or so.

So, the longest series that I have read:
* Cat Who by Lilian Jackson Braun -- 29 of 30
* In Death by J D Robb -- 24 of 27 (or is it 28 ?)
* Pern by Anne McCaffrey 20 of 20
* Kinsey Millhone by Sue Grafton -- 18 of 20
* J P Beaumont by J A Jance -- 16 of 18
* Bishop Blackie by Andrew Greeley -- 15 of 16
* Kate Shugak by Dana Stabenow -- 15 of 15
* Kay Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell -- 13 of 15
* Stephanie Plum by Janet Evanovich -- 13 of 14
* Anna Pigeon by Nevada Barr -- 13 of 14
* Pip & Flinx by Alan Dean Foster -- 12 of 13
* Joanna Brady by J A Jance -- 11 of 13
* Father O'Malley by Margaret Coel -- 11 of 13
* Charlie Moon by James D Doss -- 9 of 13
* Jessie Arnold by Sue Henry -- 11 of 12
* Benni Harper by Earlene Fowler -- 11 of 12
* FBI Series by Catherine Coulter -- 10 of 12
* Temperance Brennan by Kathy Reichs -- 10 of 11
* No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith -- 8 of 9
* Acorna -- 8 of 9
* Harry Potter -- 7 of 7
* Petaybee by Anne McCaffrey -- 6 of 6
