Title: Shall we do another readalong?
Description: read the same book together?
Marlene - April 23, 2008 07:07 PM (GMT)
Maybe someone else can organise it this time, cause I am not so good at it.
Once I have read a book I forget most of the story so quickly so it is hard for me to start discussions or ask questions.
If we would like to do another book, which book are you thinking of?
Have to think, which books are pretty popular right now?
The Book Thief but I have already read it, but maybe a lot of you have not?
any ideas? I am thinking to give people enough time to get a copy of the book.
nursiegirl42 - April 23, 2008 07:15 PM (GMT)
I would do another depending on the book.. as for the discussion part I am not good at that either but it was fun to read a book together!
Marlene - April 23, 2008 07:26 PM (GMT)
Do you have any suggestions Nursie?
some book titles?
chambejd - April 23, 2008 07:27 PM (GMT)
I would do it if I had the book and could squeeze it in between my other owed-tbrs...
Some suggestions: (after looking over the Top 100 wishes on cliffs)
The Shadow of the Wind
Reading Lolita in Tehran
Lolita
Water for Elephants
On Beauty
Suite Française
In Cold Blood
Everything is Illuminated
The Book Thief is a good idea, too!
Xeyra - April 23, 2008 08:35 PM (GMT)
I second the Water for Elephants suggestion. I've heard it's pretty good! :) Maybe we could do a poll.
Marlene - April 24, 2008 09:24 AM (GMT)
yes but I want some more suggestions.
maybe some other genres as well.
I have read only half of Water for Elephants because I had to bring it back to the library. wait too late.
On Beauty? from zadie ......?
I did read in Cold blood of course.
Gothamgal - April 24, 2008 01:39 PM (GMT)
3 Cups of Tea?
I'm not as far along as I'd hoped, so this might push me to finish it, LOL...
Sunlightbub - April 24, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
I enjoyed the previous read along...HAve quite a few of the suggestions tbr, too!!
msjoanna - April 24, 2008 08:13 PM (GMT)
Comments on other suggestions:
- Reading Lolita in Tehran: I was sort of meh about this one.
- Lolita: I've read this, but would reread for a discussion. Maybe a little bit of "ick" factor with the Humbert Humbert relationship with the young girl...
- Water for Elephants: I read this recently and wouldn't reread it for this, but I enjoyed it and think it might be interesting to discuss.
- On Beauty: I hated this book with a passion. The dialogue sucked and the characters were all stereotypes.
- Suite Française: I really enjoyed this one, but it was sort of slow reading for me...maybe too much of a slog for this group?
- In Cold Blood: I think most everyone interested in this has read it by now. I love it though, and would be happy to reread for a readalong.
- Everything is Illuminated: I liked this a lot, but I liked Foer's other book (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) better. I've read both already.
- Three Cups of Tea: I'd be interested in this, but don't currently have a copy. I'd buy one if we pick it.
- The Book Thief: I really enjoyed this, but not enough to reread having just read it last year.
Other suggestions (from randomly looking over my Mt. TBR/Wishlist):
- Something by Sarah Waters --> Fingersmith, Affinity, Night Watch, Tipping the Velvet
- The Group by Mary McCarthy
- Jesus Land by Julia Scheeres --> a very interesting looking memoir
- The Road by Cormac McCarthy --> too violent?
- The Whole World Over by Julia Glass --> the second book by the person who wrote Three Junes, based on a minor character from that book
- The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue
- Mary Modern by Camille Deangelis
- People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks --> might be too new; too expensive to get? (by the author of March and Year of Wonders
- Briar Rose by Jane Yolen --> a fairy tale retelling set in WWII, sounds like the same feel as A True Story of Hansel and Gretel, which I quite enjoyed also
Gothamgal - April 24, 2008 08:14 PM (GMT)
I happen to have a copy of Lolita that I've been meaning to read...
LOL
chambejd - April 24, 2008 08:41 PM (GMT)
I read Fingersmith a couple of months ago and loved it so I would be up for one of her books. I thought about The Road but it is kind of short so I didn't include it, but I would be up for reading that one, too. I would also be interested in The Whole World Over but do you think you need to read Three Junes first? I have that one TBR. I've never heard of your other suggestions, joanna, so I can't comment on those.
chambejd - April 24, 2008 09:35 PM (GMT)
More suggestions after looking though my TBR:
The Crimson Petal and the White - very long
Gone with the Wind - also long

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn or Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith
The Alienist or The Angel of Darkness by Caleb Carr
I Capture the Castle
The Little Friend
Slammerkin
something by Gail Tsukiyama (The Women of the Silk, The Language of Threads, The Samurai's Garden)
something by Haven Kimmel (A Girl Named Zippy, Something Rising Light and Swift, The Solace of Leaving Early, She Got Up Off the Couch)
something by Ian McEwan (Saturday, Atonement, etc)
Zorro by Isabel Allende (or a different book)
Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey
One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus
The Sea by John Banville - fairly short
something by John Irving
something by Joyce Carol Oates
something by Margaret Atwood
something by Margaret Drabble

Flesh and Blood or Specimen Days by Michael Cunningham
Brick Lane by Monica Ali
The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks
something by Susan Vreeland (The Forest Lover, The Passion of Artemisia, The Girl in Hyacinth Blue)
The Lady and the Unicorn by Tracy Chevalier
I'm really flexible about whatever we read and am just throwing out these suggestions to generate some more discussion.
giz-angel - April 24, 2008 09:38 PM (GMT)
I'd be up for a Sarah Walters :) Or Saturday - Ian McEwan
Sunlightbub - April 25, 2008 06:26 AM (GMT)
Quite like the idea of I Capture the Castle :) or indeed Slammerkin which I STILL haven't read!
Xeyra - April 25, 2008 07:40 AM (GMT)
I'd love an excuse to read The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, which I've heard is one of her best novels. :)
terra57 - April 25, 2008 09:47 AM (GMT)
I just ordered "Pomegranate Soup: A Novel" by Marsha Mehran because it looks good. Thought I would throw this one out at you.
Xeyra - April 25, 2008 09:54 AM (GMT)
We really need a poll. :P
camis - April 25, 2008 01:42 PM (GMT)
I'd give it a go as long as it was something I already had on TBR

I have a lot of these ones, chambejd.. These are the ones I have (for the most part)... :-)
The Crimson Petal and the White - need a reason to read it, length is scaring me.
Gone with the Wind - need a reason to read it, length is scaring me.
The Patron Saint of Liars by Ann Patchett--don't have it, but I LOVE this book!
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn or Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith--Have both of these, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my favorite books of all time.
The Alienist by Caleb Carr--Scary Length
The Little Friend--Scary length
Atonement by Ian McEwan--want to read it, never found the time.
something by John Irving--I love Irving and have a few that I want to read. Until We Meet again or A Prayer for Owen Meaney or Setting Free the Bears or The Water Method Man are the ones I remember that I have right off the top of my head.
something by Joyce Carol Oates--She is one of my favorite writers. Have a bunch of her books, so this could be cool (Blonde anyone? That's about Marilyn Monroe)
The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl--Older Mt. TBR, would love a reason to read it.
The Lady and the Unicorn by Tracy Chevalier--Older Mt. TBR, would love a reason to read it.
*****
Yeah, I think we need a poll, too. It might make things a bit easier.
TwiggySC1973 - April 25, 2008 03:14 PM (GMT)
Gone With The Wind- yes it's long, but it is a wonderful book and story. I've read it and Scarlett, and on TBR is Rhett Butler's People.

Oh yeah, please feel free to reduce my suggestions to whatever you want. I will not be insulted!
Kyrissaean - April 26, 2008 11:38 PM (GMT)
OK, having just voted in the thread with the poll, I'll add my thoughts on the books I've already read that are up for vote at the moment:
I Capture the Castle is lovely and charming! Austen-esque, but easier to read. I loved it! (And who knew? Turns out it's cult literature! :giggle: )
The Lady and the Unicorn was ok. Not my usual cup of tea, but it held my attention throughout. I listened to the audio version, which was well done!
The Shadow of the Wind might be a really good choice for a readalong -- I say that because it seems a lot of people either love it or find it completely disappointing, so it might generate a lot of discussion! I really enjoyed it, even though I felt like it was taking me forever to get through it. Excellent atmosphere and setting, interesting characters.... Glad my Secret Spooks partner last year had it on her wishlist so I actually got around to reading it!

I loved Gone With The Wind, too! I can't say I "hated" Scarlett, but I definitely didn't feel that it was entirely true to the characters/story. It was a fun read, though. I'd love to read Rhett Butler's People, but I'm waiting for it to come out of hardcover. Hardcovers, aside from being expensive, are heavy and clunky to mail, and aren't really paper-back-exchangable, and used bookstores don't really pay much for them because they have to sell them for incredibly cut rates to begin with if people are going to buy them. My local used store had a $1 blowout trying to unload their un-moving hardcover stock. Yes, I bought some. I plan on leaving them at my OBCZ when I've finished reading them, 'cause Crossing them in the mail would get very expensive.
Marlene - May 2, 2008 09:57 AM (GMT)
Gone with the Wind is so amazing. read it many a times during my life.
I read Scarlett just the one time. Like GG said, a fun read but not one I want to re read like with Gone with The Wind.
