Oh my, the internet is wide and helpful but we might just ask the wrong questions

I do hope that someone here can help us with the following questions:

I know that New York is called "The Big Apple" but there is a second term for the city - which we are not able to find

In which district do yuppies live and why ?

There is a magnificent street in Manhatten where many foreigners live ??????????

Thanks so much for your help here !!!!

Sorry I have no clue. He must have a hard teacher... or at least an ex-New Yorker. :giggle:

I'm sure we have some New Yorkers here... at the very least Cherie lives um kinda close I think... at least a lot closer than I do.

I'm sure someone here knows the answers.

What about the nickname "Gotham"? (name given to New York City by Washington Irving in the Salmagundi Papers, 1807)

I've lived in NYC my whole life and still a couple of these are tricky.

I know that New York is called "The Big Apple" but there is a second term for the city - which we are not able to find

"The city that never sleeps." (I like chambejd's suggestion of "Gotham," too.)

In which district do yuppies live and why ?
Soho, The Village, Tribeca ???

There is a magnificent street in Manhatten where many foreigners live ??????????

Is there just one street?

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. :(

Hmmm, my guesses:

I know that New York is called "The Big Apple" but there is a second term for the city - which we are not able to find

I would have said this too: "The city that never sleeps." but I think Gotham City might be right.

In which district do yuppies live and why ?
My first thought was Upper West Side, but I'm not sure why I think that - maybe new money.

There is a magnificent street in Manhatten where many foreigners live ??????????

My guess would be 5th Ave, because of all the embassies and consulates. It strikes me as a trick question.

:ditto:

I might just go with Manhattan on that one. But I'm not sure that it's a question that really makes sense. If you want to get down to neighborhoods...there are so many...indeed, these days, you'd probably also include Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights in Brooklyn...

There is a magnificent street in Manhatten where many foreigners live ??????????

I might guess "Avenue of the Americas" since it's a street dedicated to the different "Americas" (e.g., South America, etc.) But this seems like a strange question also...

Austrian teachers are nasty! I am sure they made up the questions using info they only heard somewhere from a friend :giggle:

Thanks so much for your help!

We have a catalogue of about 15 such nasty questions. Some are easy with the help of google and wikipedia but some are just tricky (In which district do people of one kind live? -> China Town, Littly Italie, Harlem ??), like you said.
Luckily we have till Friday to find some answers and write a Fact Sheet

I apologize in advance, Riannone, I am absolutely not picking on you, but I cannot help but speak up about this question your son's teacher wrote.

I don't mean to be rude but your son should speak to his teacher about perpetuating stereotypes. There is a fine line between identifying the names of those areas (which came about through the congregation of various "immigrant" populations (I use that term in quotes because most people in America are "immigrants" of some kind)) and suggesting that there is racial segregation in New York. I'm sure it could just be translation or wording, but the questions sounds to me as if your son's teacher is assuming that only people of Chinese origin currently live in Chinatown, that only people of Italian origin currently live in Little Italy, or that only people of African origin currently live in Harlem. This may have been true at one point in history, but is certainly not true today and is only perceived that way.

There are absolutely racial/social/economic challenges in America (unfortunately) but the thought that your son's teacher is putting so blatant a spin on it is disturbing. The variation in the answers we have given about where "yuppies" live is another example; this is a term that went out of fashion (in the 80s, I think!) and is simply a way of putting people in categories that are just a fad and really meaningless. People who might be considered "yuppies" live all over New York, and Maine, and Ohio, and Texas, etc. To suggest that they all live along one street in New York City is a bit limited.

I respect your son's teacher's desire to educate her students about the geography and history of other places; but if he is studying New York City, he should be studying the geographic and historical importance of places like The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

:soapbox: If I have offended, I am so sorry. As a teacher, I am very careful not to allow my students to perpetuate stereotypes or make comments that encompass a group of people. It is so easy to allow ourselves to think this way. Your son's teacher could change the meaning of her question so much just by changing a few words so that it reads "In which district did immigrants and people of common ancestry once settle, thus giving the district its name?"
