Title: Old Timey Kid Shows
Description: and collecting them for future generatio
lexilewords - April 15, 2008 05:03 PM (GMT)
I don't know about anyone else but I'm not really into the new 'kid' shows they have nowadays. In my opinion Disney and Nick have gone downhill with their programming, but I suppose that's generational right?
But for myself I want to collect the shows I grew up on--Fraggle Rock, Muppet Show, Darkwing Duck, Smurfs--for any kids I might one day have (or any kids my siblings will have). To that end my amazon wishlist is filled with tons of dvd sets for those old shows.
My mom recently, while buying me gifts for my birthday, saw all these old shows and critisized the fact that I wanted to collect them for future kids I might not even have. 'A waste of money and space' is what she said.
Does anyone else do that? I know my Aunt collected the disney VHS' for her future grandkids (and now the DVD's) because she was despairing of them having any taste in movies or shows nowadays, and my dad used to collect Looney Tunes for us (before mom sold them on ebay when they divorced).
Is it really that weird? I'm only 24 but thinking of the future like that? I do it with books too--I have a few boxes of kid's books and teen books to give to my daughter or niece one day so she doesn't grow up on silly fluff like 'Gossip Girl' and 'The A-List'.

I used to collect Disney movies for my kids, but I gave that up years ago. It's not stupid, though, because my own kids are crazy about some of the old shows. They LOVE Transformers, did a GI Joe stint, and are obsessed with Star Wars and Indiana Jones. I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of any right now. But the good stuff never dies.

I think the reason we keep seeing things like My Little Pony and Care Bears and Ninja Turtles resurfacing is that we like to share things from our own childhood with our kids. So no, not weird at all.

I've attempted to justify a purchase to myself that way, and gotten the "who are you trying to convince" answer! If you want it, buy it! So long as you can afford it! ;)
*has season 1 of muppet show, and wants more, would love to have Transformers and Thundercats too, but too expense to give in so far!*
and I keep picking up the kids books when I see them cheap on the sale racks, my faves anyway, things like Mrs. Piggle Wiggle etc.

I used to collect the Disney movies to. In VHS no doubt :giggle:
But as the kids got older I seen they weren't as interested.
I get a kick out of my daughter though. One weekend when Matt was camping she asked me if I wanted to watch a movie on the weekend. I said yeah thinking that we would be watching something that we haven't saw. When it was time to pick a movie she went and got out the tape The Great Mouse Detective That's her favorite movie. I guess it will always be

I kinda do that. I like to get dvds of old kids tv shows, to watch them myself but I do hold on to them for any kids I may have in the future.

we (myself and mr paganfrog) started collecting classic kid shows and movies long before the lil hopper arrived on the scene. now we collect them for all three of us.
we have alot of the classic disney movies (although some of what is classed as a classic disney is cack like mulan and lilo and stitch, which we wont touch with a barge pole)
we love watching old tv shows like bagpuss, mr benn, and camberwick green (all brit shows) and a very recent kids show that i consider will be a timeless classic like the good old shows is pocoyo.
i really do think its a shame that these days the stuff thats made for kids now is utter cack. kids go for this garbage becaese thats all thats all that they now because thats all that is thrown at them by the cretins that make this junk.

I don't think it's a waste. You'll be glad you have them if you do ever have kids.
Shaunesay, Thundercats, good one. I'll have to think about that for my son.

seriously. I don't even recognize the TV channels anymore. in this need to be as PC as possible they are making everything ridiculous. but then someone had that post about 'tag' being banned at her child's school (its banned at my day care center) which is also kinda loopy...

I did it, kinda I did it with Disney movies, and wished I had done more. My mom taped off tv, a tape with Strawberry Shortcake, The Smufs, and 1 afterschool special move Zac and the Magic Factory. I still love the tape, and Jordan (my 3 y/o) is always wanting to watch it.
She also likes my Fraggle Rock, and the old school (70s I think) Dr. Suess cartoons.
I agree, a lot of the shows now are crap... Except 1.. ok there are others, but one that has really helped Jordan a lot. WordWorld. It's on PBS, everything is made out of letters, like the duck, is actually drawn from a D U C K. They build words, like say they want a pie, they take P I E, sound it out shove the letters together, and it forms a pie. This show has really helped Jordan, she's not yet reading, but that's not to far off. She'll see a stop sign and say "S T O P that says stop." Even the other day in the Post Office, she kept asking me what a sign said, problem was there were signs all over the dang thing. I finally asked her what the letters were, and with out missing a beat said "E X I T".
Another option is I know sometimes they used to play old cartoons on tv. They may still have a time like on say cartoon network where they do, tape them off the tv. Oh, and also, check out the discount bin at WalMart, the crappy dvd section for like 1-5 bucks... that's where I found Jordan's old Care Bear dvds for only a few bucks. It's not a whole season, more like 3-5 shows, but still.

Not the least bit odd!!! I have been doing it since I was a teen, anyway. Hoarding Disney movies etc... and books, for sure, lots and lots of good kids book (I've got two sets of the entire Winnie The Pooh, and have bought The Little Prince several times because I keep giving it away  ) and as soon as the kids shows from my youth started showing up, I started buying them. I'm desperately seeking one of those Christmas Specials with the stop-motion puppets -- like the Rudolph and the Island of the Misfit Toys -- do you remember it? Only this one was about how Santa Claus came to be Santa Claus because he grew up fostered by magical creatures in the forest... a lioness named Shiegra... he's taken on a flight through the world by The Great Ak... egads. Anyways, if anyone has seen it, I want it desperately, please help me get it! Price is not an issue.
However, an interesting aside. The GateKeeper did that, too -- collected memories of his childhood to share with his kids. He actually has kids, so I can relay how this experiment has worked out.
It's been largely disappointing... I mean, as much as he loved He-Man, his sons really didn't. They would rather watch SpongeBob. (I don't mind watching SpongeBob, so I forgive them.) His 7 year old found my all-time favourite film (Labyrinth, circa 1986 with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly) too terrifying to watch, but he is scared of lots of things, so maybe when he's a little older he'll be able to appreciate the awesomeness of it :giggle: However, some things have remained awesome: Flash Gordon was a hit. Now that I'm on summer break, I will read The Little Prince with Alex and find out how he likes it. I also have the anime of it on VHS somewhere at my parents' house, so I plan on sniping that when we go visit this summer.
Even if the kids don't appreciate the wonderful, you can :giggle: It is genuinely interesting to re-watch something from your youth and see it through the lens of your years and find out if it's still wonderful, if it still speaks to you the way it used to.
Oh, btw, the kids liked ET, but not enough to finish watching it. Maybe it was too long?
