Title: Pay for Postage

lexilewords - April 10, 2008 05:21 AM (GMT)
Hey guys!

we're going through my grandma's stuff (trying to clear out everything and make room to clean) and there's alot of books. I mean like over a ton and more. We tried to selling them wholesale to a book guy but he wasn't really into them (not like first editions or historical or something) and my dad is basically saying we're gonna give them to the library or Salvation Army or possibly even just toss them because he isn't sure anyone will want to cart around so many books (at least a dumpster full just in the living room).

Mostly grandma has the following:

in paperback--old mysteries from before 1990 (Agatha Christie mostly) a bunch of thrillers/horror, and regular fiction. Sherlock Holmes, some old gothics...

in hardcover--reader digest collected editions, classics, italian-american books and tons of cookbooks.

there's also more in the attic, but right now we're worrying over th living room and study.

If'n you are looking for a particular book by Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes or what have you please let me know. we're not talking rare books--these are all books you can find at your local used bookstore or thrift store, but she has multiples of alot of them. Certain kind of cookbook also (she has an entire room of them).

Just ask that you pay shipping and handling fees (remember the hardbacks and cookbooks can get pricey Int'l so be warned).

Post here and let me know and on Sunday, when we go back over, I'll take a look and sort out what people want. I'm pretty sure we're not getting rid of them in the next week so you have about that long (I'll post here when the offer is over with).

The books themselves come in a variety of conditions--the paperbacks are older and yellowing, the hardcovers are near perfect except shelf wear. Plus everything has the smell of dust (most of these books weren't touched for DECADES).

PepperVL - April 10, 2008 06:00 AM (GMT)
I'm looking for the following Agatha Christie books:

Cards on the Table
4.50 From Paddington/What Mrs. McGillycuddy Saw/Murder She Said
Lord Edgware Dies/Thirteen at Dinner
Murder in Mesopotamia
A Murder is Announced
Death is not the Worst Thing
The Harlequin Tea Set and Other Stories
The Hound of Death
The Listerdale Mystery
Miss Marple's Final Cases and Two Other Stories
Murder in the Mews/Dead Man's Mirror
Surprise! Surprise!
Three Blind Mice and Other Stories
While the Light Lasts and Other Stories

The ones with two titles on the line are alternate titles for the same book. I'd be happy to pay postage for any/all of the above. :D

Good for you to post here, and Hooray for BOb! :whee: (I see Pepper's in this thread, so no dancing you-know-whats)

I do hope the library or Sally Army will take the books that we don't ask for. I know we once culled through a professor's books and tried to take his cast-offs to Oxfam, who said, "If he doesn't want them anymore, why would we?" :duh:

I'd pay postage for "Friday the Rabbi slept late" by Kemelman or "Robots of Dawn" by Asimov (but no hardcovers please - too expensive).

lexilewords - April 10, 2008 03:17 PM (GMT)
Pepper--if they are in omnibus editions, would that be okay (she has many of those for Agatha Christie), or would you prefer them all in individual editions?

Potok--there are alot of books that were/are considered classics, so I'm hoping that things do work out.

My Uncle suggested a yard sale, but it was voted 'no' cause everyone agreed it would be indecent to have a yard sale on grandma's property when she hasn't been laid to rest for more then a month...

PepperVL - April 11, 2008 01:06 AM (GMT)
I'd prefer individual editions, but if she has some of those titles just in an omnibus, that's fine too.

Front Street - April 11, 2008 01:30 AM (GMT)
A long shot but...
Betty Crocker's Barbecue cookbook?
I have been trying to find a copy for a friend.

lexilewords - April 11, 2008 01:41 AM (GMT)
Front--I'll check on Sunday, I don't have a masterlist (oh dear lord my arm would fall off), but I did see a collection of Betty Crocker's so its possible!

nursiegirl42 - April 13, 2008 04:44 AM (GMT)
I would love any slow cooker/ crock pot cookbooks and any cookie cookbooks.. let me know what you got and I'll let you know if its something I dont have already!

Thanks!

Apolonia - April 13, 2008 05:29 AM (GMT)
Maybe this is a dumb question, I am tired and it's late, but what do you mean by Italian American books?

Books in Italian, books set in Italy, books translated from Italian? Depending on what you mean I may be interested. I would also be interested in Italian cookbooks, and quick and easy or one dish meal type cookbooks.

appaloosatb - April 13, 2008 08:07 AM (GMT)
If you don't get enough of a response here, you could also try posting on Bookcrossing. For several years I rescued 30+ boxes of books about to be thrown out after a library book sale and had people send postage for random boxes of books. I always found enough takers. :)

I might be interested in a box of titles containing animals for the September animal release challenge. (Yes, I'm already starting to hoard books for this! :giggle: ). I'd prefer all paperback as they'll be easier to store. Nothing especially smelly due to my allergies, but yellowed/worn is just fine.

redhot-brat - April 15, 2008 03:00 AM (GMT)
I'd be interested in a box of cookbooks (or 2 depending on size). I love flipping through various cookbooks looking for new stuff. If there are any old ones (older the better) I have a friend that would love them. Old, yellowed, or dusty is fine as they will have some time to air out before they go to her.

If you want to give me a rough idea on the size of boxes you are using I'll decide how many I can afford. As far as the contents..... surprise me with a variety. :)

ETA .... If there are any large print books amongst the stacks I'll happily take them all , but will have them mailed to a different address. :) Thanks!

elsi - April 15, 2008 03:15 AM (GMT)
Lexilewords: I'd love to have some of the cookbooks. If there are any "series" books -- like the Southern Living Annual Cookbooks -- different books from the same publisher in similar bindings, I'd be particularly interested.

lexilewords - April 15, 2008 04:03 AM (GMT)
brat--my grandma has an entire room of nothing but cookbooks of various sizes, most of them dating before 1995 (and that's my conservative guess right there, I think most of them from the early 80's...). As for the box size, depends on what I have in my apartment honestly. I get alot of stuff from amazon so from there, though I have access to file boxes and various boot boxes.

elsi--I'm pretty sure she does have series books, I remember seeing Becky Crocker of course as well as Good Housekeeping. I will check more thoroughly when I go back during the weekend and give you a report :)

Apolonia--definately have those cookbooks you would like and as for what I meant by 'Italian-American' my grandma (and granddad when he was alive) collected books about Italian-Americans and their experiences. Memoirs, 'coffee table' books that sort of thing. All of my granddad's italian translated books were given away as no one else in my family speaks the language sadly.

nursie--I know grandma has a number of cookie books, not as many slow cooker (to my knowledge she never used one). but I will double check!

Appa--grandma was a big animal lover (mostly dogs), so I'm sure she has some. I will root them out! and as far as posting on BookCrossing, I'm working my way through here first, then dad's new book dealer dude is gonna buy a bunch and then what ever is left I get to deal with so I might just post to BookCrossing (and craigslist).

as for everyone else--I'm sorry I didn't go this past sunday. my dad had delicate family issues to discuss with his brothers and sisters and I was told, rather...tersely, that my business should be conducted at a later date by my Uncle Anthony. >.>;; apparently even though it effects me I'm not allowed in on the discussions, but whatever.

Tribefan - April 15, 2008 06:29 PM (GMT)
I would be happy to pay postage for any boxes of books you want to send my way! I am already starting to collect for a mass release for next Feburary and would love anything you are willing to send! Let me know how much I owe you and I will send it your way!

Marlene - April 15, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
I just ask but probably is a chance of a million

I am looking for this old book
Wanderers eastward, wanderers west by Kathleen Winsor (author of Amber)

Apolonia - April 16, 2008 12:22 AM (GMT)
I'll send ya a pm Lexie..

Daelith - April 16, 2008 03:51 PM (GMT)
Any Paula Deen cookbooks? I have both the Lady and Sons editions, plus one of her dessert books. Have to look at the titles. Also like the Southern Living cookbooks. I'd have to look at which of those I have too.
I like mysteries too. Just read my first Agatha Christie last year.
And like Appa, I collect the ones with animals in the titles too for the Your Such an Animal challenge.

Also, do you take paypal?

nursiegirl42 - April 16, 2008 03:57 PM (GMT)
I would love several of the cookie cookbooks.. they are my faves!
As for the slow cooker ones if there isnt any thats OK.

Thanks for the offer and look forward to hearing about what ones she has!

lexilewords - April 16, 2008 04:10 PM (GMT)
Dae--I do take paypal :) and I will look for PAula Deen and the Southern Living books! Are there Agatha christie's you want in particular or any would be fine?

Daelith - April 16, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
The only Christie I've read is Ten Little Indians (And Then There Were None).

I thought of some other authors I like she might have in the mysteries...Robert B. Parker and Stuart Woods

Looking for these books by Parker
Spenser series - Mortal Stakes, Judas Goat, Looking For Rachel Wallace, A Savage Place, A Catskill Eagle, Pale Kings and Princes, Crimson Joy, Playmates, Stardust, Double Duce, Paperdoll

Jesse Stone series - Death in Paradise, High Profile and Stranger is Paradise

These of Woods
Stone Barrington series - The Short Forever, Dirty Work, Two-Dollar Bill, Fresh Disasters, Shot Him If He Runs
Other books - Dead Eyes, Imperfect Strangers, Santa Fe Rules

Thanks Lexi

ETA: I'll let you know by tomorrow which SL cookbooks I have for sure since someone else was interested in those too.

ETA again: Okay the SL cook books I have are 1983, 1986 and 2005
Christmas SL I have 2001 and 2005
The other Paula Deen book I have is Lady and Sons Just Desserts.

lexilewords - April 17, 2008 03:52 AM (GMT)
okay I went to my grandma's today and here's the low down:

Cookbook wise--
there aren't any Southern Living Books or Paula Deen--there's Betty Crocker, Better Homes and Gardens and then everything else. Nursie I found a whole lot of cookie recipe books and I also found 3 slow cooker/crockpot books.

I found about a dozen 'multi-cultural' books and then a bunch of Italian cooking books.

Agatha Christie wise--
Pepper I found two of the books you wanted in individual books (both are hardbacks, but not heavy). I found 4 others in omnibus volumes, but 4 different omnibus volumes and they are pretty heavy.

Dae there were a number of Agatha Christie paperbacks that weren't listed on Pepper's list that I thought you might like, as well as two or three other authors who seemed pretty interesting. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but mystery isn't really my thing, I can tell you the authors if you like though to see if you would like them.

Animal Book Wise--
Appa I got you a whole bunch of animal books--coffee table, educational, stories and kid books. I can send you a list if you like.

As for everything else--there wasn't any Large Print (sorry Brat!), there was sewing and home DIY books, still alot of classics and tons of older paperbacks (Sherlock Holmes, horror, some Western Romance books) and hardbacks from Stephen King and Hitchcock. Plus ALOT of religious books (bibles, study books, reference books...) I know several of you have asked for just 'random' boxes of books for releasing, so after the Book Guy comes by on Sunday and decides on what he wants to buy I'll put together boxes for you guys. I'm assuming no one would like a box full of Reader's Digest Condensed Books right XD

Lexie

Daelith - April 17, 2008 01:34 PM (GMT)
That's fine on the Christie and other mystery books. No list necessary. If there's room in the box without just over loading the thing toss in a Betty Crocker or H&G cookbook or two to help you move them. I can always find a home for them or use them in release challenges. I'll pm you my address.

Thanks again Lexie!

terrafreaky - April 17, 2008 03:48 PM (GMT)
I'd like to sign up for a random box for releasing.
:)

nursiegirl42 - April 17, 2008 05:06 PM (GMT)
Oh I would love several of the cookie cookbooks and the slowcooker ones.. just let me know how much and I will get it to you ASAP!

Thanks bunches!

HUGGZZZZZZZ!!

lexilewords - April 18, 2008 05:26 PM (GMT)
Nursie --let me have your addy so I can send'em :)

Terra --I'll add your name to the list then!

Dae --thanks for the addy!

ps: none of these will have BCID's (I don't have the patience i'm sorry! ) so don't fret if you can't find one!

Gothamgal - April 18, 2008 05:51 PM (GMT)
We're always looking for books to release at the reading festival next year... And I know people were asking about nonfiction and religious, and I always read horror.

Once the bookman comes, let me know what you have and we can probably do something, if that's cool...
:P

Tribefan - April 18, 2008 06:19 PM (GMT)
Like gothamgirl said between the two of us and you I'm sure we can work something out to take those books off your hands!!

Do you have a printer to where you could just print out pre-numbered labels? I understand about not having patience though...

That's fine. I don't mind doing it myself. Besides I have some nifty new labels with Rotties on them that mississippimom made for me. :bounce:

redhot-brat - April 22, 2008 03:44 AM (GMT)
Bummer on no Large print, but I'd still be interested in the "Multi-Cultural" and Italian cookbooks. I'm always open to any mystery books too, though I think I'm good on Agatha Christie's at the moment.

If you want to set me up a box (or two if there's enough cookbooks) and let me know The cost ... I'll send it right over. Thanks. :)

PS. No BCID's is cool here too. I have the time to get them tagged.

no I'm sorry  getting to the post office has been difficult to say the least. I only have time on my breaks do such (at least when the PO is open) and this week since I went back to work the work kinda piled up on me. I will make more of an effort next week since I am only one portfolio behind, as opposed to 6 now. Its not more then $15 though I know that much.

Tribe, unfortunately no. my dad is...wary of letting me near his printer after breaking the last one and at work I can't afford to take the chance I would be noticed and written up.

Thanks

hey Front--no there wasn't any Betty Crocker BBQ books, Better Holmes and Gardens, but not Betty Crocker. I'm sorry! I looked twice just to be sure (since there were so many repeat books), but no luck. :(
