OK I have done this part and I found it - well slower but important to the story.

Nothing much happened in this part, yes, though I agree it was important, in terms of Rose finally speaking about what Ruby already had mentioned (their impending death and her child), which is a big step for Rose, I think. I also find it interesting that though she claims at the beginning she wants to write the book in a somewhat chronological way, she jumps quite a bit throughout it. So does Ruby. They're everywhere with their thoughts/writing, be it the past, present or future.

Am I the only person who liked this section more than the first section?

I thought the first section was a little too driven by enormous plot devices and wasn't getting deeply enough into the characters...this section, while moving slower than the giant leaps of the first section, is doing much more complicated character development.

In particular, I like the way that Ruby is unfolding as a separate character with her own, more complicated than Rose realizes, thoughts. I like that Nick has become three-dimensional as well.

I have more to say, but I'm late already leaving for work. Perhaps I'll have time to come back later today...

Joanna, I agree with you. I don't think I ever said I didn't like this chapter, just that it didn't move along in terms of actual story events like the first and third, but there was a lot of character development and important insights, which I loved.
