Title: Wilton Cake Decorating Classes
Description: Has anyone taken them?

Gothamgal - March 24, 2008 03:18 PM (GMT)
I spent way too much money at Joann's Fabrics this weekend, getting cake/cupcake decorating supplies. And now I've decided to sign up for cake decorating I--their intro class.

Has anyone taken it? I'm going to be getting a class list of what we need and such, and I picked up the book and the kit over the weekend, but just wondered if anyone had taken the classes/what they thought of them/etc..??

I've never formally been taught, but I like doing it, and I think it might be fun to try and do some different things (a fondant class is being given just after the other class), and just be able to make things... As if I needed another hobby.

Right now, April is totally full. I have my normal RCBP stuff, I'm planning on doing some stuff for my brother's graduation and I have a Comic Convention to go to AND I'm doing Script Frenzy again. They say that the months where you have tons to do are a lot easier to work with than the months where you don't, but still!!!

Am I over committing? :giggle:

(The good news is, in anticipation of a lot of stuff next month, I'm trying to get more Mt. TBR taken care of. I have a list of Mt. TBR and have been reading off of it so that I can get it hammered out)...

I took the first one a couple of years back. I loved it. It was a great outlet for me. I would love to take more of them - repeat the first one actually cuz my roses and shells suck. It was a lot of fun though!

A tip - make friends with a few people in the class and when you have to bring in different color icing, everyone take a color and bring enough for everyone to share 'cuz otherwise, it's a PITA. LOL

I've been thinking about signing up for one, so I'll be very anxious to hear how it goes for you! Keep us posted!

Good Luck Nicole. I have decorated some of my boy's birthday cakes over the years on my own but never took a class before. They have them here at Hobby Lobby and I have thought about taking them before. I may one day do that. :)

Thank you ladies so much for the help. I'll definitely keep you posted. This is kinda weird to take, never thought I'd take it with the BF's sister (even though we're in the same department at work and everything), but I just figured I wanted to take it with someone I know...

I might even make a cake tonight and bring it into work tomorrow, as my 'before' cake... So I can gauge how to improve, LOL...

My mom took Wilton Cake Decorating Classes. She loved them. After taking these classes she has worked as a head decorator specializing in sculpted and wedding cakes. We lived in at the time. People came as far away as Louisville, KY to get one of her wedding cakes. She was also a Bakery Manager for many years for Publix Supermarkers in Georgia. Good luck with your classes. I'm sure you will enjoy them.

Oohhh I would love to take a cake decorating class sometime :)

I went out and bought a bunch of stuff. The class is $21 at Joann's because it's on special and I got a coupon for 10% off supplies last night. Once I complete the class I will get a coupon for $10 off the next class--and I'm hoping to take the fondant one next.

I picked up meringue powder, clear vanilla, icing colors, a pack of clown heads (weird!) and parchment triangles. Just have to pick up piping gel and possibly a cake tray that revolves so I can ice a cake.

I'm really excited, the BF's sister is too... LOL. They told me that I only had to bring our course book to the first class, but now I'm in a cake mood, so I might run home and make a mini strawberry cake or something.

While we were there last night there was another class that was just getting started and it seemed really cool. Everyone was happy and the instructor was nice and it seemed really low pressure, so I think it's just the thing I need right now.

I already talked to the BF's sister and it looks like we'll be doing the icing share thing, LOL... Very cool. We're also going to see if we can get the BF's grandma to come and watch, if only to get her out of the house. She originally wanted to take the class, but I think she doesn't want to commit because she's not feeling too well.

Yay! I'll have to take before and after pictures as well, so I can gauge my progress.

And to think, all this started with 6 dozen cupcakes.

I took a couple Wilton classes 4 years ago with a friend and we LOVED IT! Got hooked. Make all our kids birthday cakes and cakes for special occasions (baby showers and stuff) and even did her brother's wedding cake. I sign up for treats for the kid's school parties just so I can make fun cupcakes.

Have fun! :P

Ooh, those sound like fun classes! And for homework you get to make icing? Yeah baby -- that's my kind of homework! :bananadance:

Take pictures of your cakes so we can see too!
