Well I just learned how to use the new database and I noticed some participants have books listed on there as being owing for more than 6 months....

Please check it out and try to update if you can. If you have books that people have been waiting to receive for more than 6 months, please be honest. Thanks!

I have cleared the one owed to LML already and it should be removed now.

I just heard back from AM on the one I owed to her. It is a case of she said to nevermind sending it and I never updated my records to reflect that. She chose to not pick something else at the time, but we decided tonight to have her pick something in it's place which I will be sending out as soon as she tells me what it is.. I will have a mod update/clear it tomorrow. :)

Other then those the rest of my owed are within the 6 month (actually within 3 months) frame, so I am okay now? I think.

ETA: I will ask for Giz's reveal, which I have, so I'll be right back with it, as I know she's in bed at this hour.

The Sea by John Banville

user posted image

Synopsis
This title is the winner of the 2005 Man Booker Prize. When art historian Max Morden returns to the seaside village where he once spent a childhood holiday, he is both escaping from a recent loss and confronting a distant trauma. The Grace family had appeared there, in that long-ago summer, as if from another world. Mr. and Mrs. Grace, with their worldly ease and candour, were unlike any adults he had met before. But it was his contemporaries, the Grace twins, Myles and Chloe, who most fascinated Max. He grew to know them intricately, even intimately, and what ensued would haunt him for the rest of his years and shape everything that was to follow. Praise for "The Sea": 'With his fastidious wit and exquisite style, John Banville is the heir to Nabokov. "The Sea" [is] his best novel so far ...Banville's prose is sublime' - "Daily Telegraph". 'This is a novel in which all Banville's remarkable gifts come together to produce a real work of art, disquieting, disturbing, beautiful, intelligent, and in the end, surprisingly, offering consolation' - Allan Massie, "Scotsman". '"The Sea" is a beautiful novel, challenging and richly rewarding ...It is a comfort to know that we have a lord of language among us' - Gerry Dukes, "Irish Independent".

This book won the Man Booker prize 2005

The House at Riverton by Kate Morton

Summer 1924
On the eve of a glittering society party, by the lake of a grand English country house,a young poet takes his life. The only witnesses, sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, will never speak to each other again.

Winter 1999
Grace Bradley, ninety-eight, one-time housemaid at Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director making a film about the poet's suicide. Ghost awaken and old memories - long consigned to the dark reaches of Grace's mind - begin to sneak back through the cracks. A shocking secret threatens to emerge, something history has forgotten but Grace never could.

Okay. I hate shopping like that too. If you ahve to buy clothes for yourself. aargh.
Being confronted with yourself in mirrors of small dressing rooms. aargh Horrible.

I hope there is one shop where you can find a few nice things you can try one.

Good luck!!

Just checking in! I'm so tired I feel that I'm going to have to drag myself through the day.

Unfortunately, last Thursday, our au pair was rear-ended while stopped at a light. The good news is that everyone is fine. The bad news is that our van is really beat up. We have no other car that can transport all 4 of our kids ('cuz the oldest is still too young to sit in the front seat). So, today, I have to go rent a van, hope that the offender's insurance will cover it, and then drive around sorting it all out.

What a hassle!

Oh well, everyone was fine though. Thank God for that!

Hey! just peeking in during brunch

My book is one I really enjoyed.

Waking Beauty a Novel by Elyse Friedman

user posted image

Friedman (Then Again) offers up a spunky, spiteful revenge novel about Allison Penny, an ugly 20-something who suddenly wakes up gorgeous—a silly conceit counterbalanced by bulls-eye social commentary and sharply drawn characters. Allison's roommate, Virginie, and her boyfriend, Fraser, have long made Allison's life hell; pretty much everybody is inconsiderate of pretransformation Allison, including her own adoptive mother. Her only friend is Nathan, a video store clerk and aspiring film critic. Early chapters catalogue the injustices of a world in which unattractive people can't get ahead, while later chapters satisfyingly knock down the pins lined up earlier: Allison gets revenge on Virginie, Fraser, her mother and a supporting cast of shop girls, literati and other pretentious types. But she hasn't become beautiful just to get revenge, has she? "Did I have some sort of beauty duty to perform? And if so, what would it be? Posing naked for a PETA billboard? Administering blowjobs to ugly outcasts?" No, but there's a lesson here: "it's what's on the outside that counts." Beautiful Allison gets handsome suitors, job offers—even her mother's affection. But she's kept her sharp, sardonic view of all things superficial, and she still loves homely Nathan. Friedman thumbs her nose at many of the conventions of chick lit, and the nasty bite of her prose offers plenty of guilty pleasure.
P.S this copy is well read

Well am back from an expected depressing shopping trip!
I had to stop myself buying even more books in Waterstones (3 for 2)
I have come home empty handed so am going to raid the catalogue now - much easier in the comfort of my own home.

I did wash my car on the way home as it was filthy after driving through the sleet and snow on saturday, so feel I have achieved something - ha

Root - hope your car renting goes ok, sorry to hear about the bump!

Spiderchic have you thought of trying Cheshire Oaks, the outlet centre, or is that too far away from you?
Now we have our new shopping centre in Wycombe, the previous shops are turning into outlet stores for Country Casual/Austin Reed, Principals and Alexon. We finally have a decent shopping centre so don't need to trek to Oxford or Watford. :bananadance:

AceofHearts - March 24, 2008 03:41 PM (GMT)

Spiderchic, can't stand clothes shopping. But I don't think I would be brave enough to pick something from a catalog. It always looks better on someone else

So, this is my check-in, confirm, my reveal is out with BCID (I'm so proud of me)... and now I will look at the reveals and then be right back with an update.

ETA: at this stage in the game, I believe I'm going to ask for Rootmartin's reveal. I'll PM to let her know...

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.
