Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey through His Son's Addiction by David Sheff

Synopsis

Sheff's story is a first: a teenager's addiction from the parent's point of view—a real-time chronicle of the shocking descent into substance abuse and the gradual emergence into hope. Before meth, Sheff's son Nic was a varsity athlete, honor student, and award-winning journalist. After meth, he was a trembling wraith who stole money from his eight-year-old brother and lived on the streets. With haunting candor, Sheff traces the first subtle warning signs, the denial (by both child and parents), the three A.M. phone calls (is it Nic? the police? the hospital?), the attempts at rehab, and, at last, the way past addiction. He shows us that, whatever an addict's fate, the rest of the family must care for each other too, lest they become addicted to addiction. Meth is the fastest-growing drug in the United States, as well as the most addictive and the most dangerous—wreaking permanent brain damage faster than any other readily available drug. It has invaded every region and demographic in America. This book is the first that treats meth and its impact in depth. But it is not just about meth. Nic's addiction has wrought the same damage that any addiction will wreak. His story, and his father's, are those of any family that contains an addict—and one in three American families does.

No problem... X... you are in CA, right? US only?

oi-reader - March 21, 2008 01:53 AM (GMT)
I'd like to join, in Ohio and prefer to ship domestically.

candieb - March 21, 2008 04:33 AM (GMT)
You got it... I might move people around later too :)

oh, and I have to send an MBag out so if someone wants it International that doesn't mind shipping it back to the US, I'd send it to them when I do the MBag since I gotta go deal with the PO anyway :)

msjoanna - March 21, 2008 01:20 PM (GMT)
I'll ship it anywhere as I seem to have lots of international packages right now anyway.

Thanks for making a ring -- I put it on my wishlist after seeing your post in the "currently reading" thread.

ETA: I'm in New York.

Heh, yeah, I saw your date and I figured I influenced you... oh man, it was SO good... I'll see if anyone else wants in before mailing it out.

OH!!! ME, Me!!! That's a wishlist book! Pleases? I'm in Canada and will ship anyplace at all... Just don't make me first in line  I'm a little busy ATM.

candieb - March 22, 2008 06:34 PM (GMT)
Gate, I think you guys prefer US if we can swing it, so I put someone after you in the US :)

Megi53 - March 31, 2008 05:27 PM (GMT)
How did I miss seeing this? I noticed a big display of about a dozen copies of Beautiful Boy at my local Starbucks and it looked soooo good.

Please add me. I live in Virginia, would prefer US, but if you get in a bind I can mail overseas as long as it's after May (2 kids in college = strict budget).

Thanks so much, Candy! At #6 I should get the book well after May, so you can go ahead and put me down for international mailing in case another non-US reader joins.

Looking forward to this ring!
