Title: the cat grabbed the red breast bird

Marlene - March 14, 2008 01:02 PM (GMT)
The little birdie I have been talking about who has been visiting my garden for years.
I saw the cat walking with something in her mouth.
I poured water over the cat.
Later she came back and wanted to get inside of the house.
Suddenly I thought OMG I hope it is not my red breast.
I looked and now I see a bird is lying under some branches. but the worst part she still breaths.
she is lying on her side and I am totally in tears.

I know I can't do anything.

I hate to see her suffering. . I had planned to pick thbe bird up thought she was dead. I know I can't go to her cause she will get scared
Him I mean. he has been a visitor of my garden for so many years now.
Sory I am hysterical and not funny

Oooh, this is terrible to hear, Marlene.

I used to have a per bird and it got out and suffered a similar fate at the hands of my cat.

A good way to think about it is that the cat is just doing what it's supposed to be doing. They have instincts and while they may not line up with ours, they're there.

My little amazing orange kitty killed a poor little mouse about a month ago and I couldn't look at her for a few days.

Yes but knowing that bird is there slowly ding. I am crying here like a babyl.

hyperventilating. Plus the fact that I am such a coward , just leaving it there.

cheesygiraffe - March 14, 2008 01:17 PM (GMT)
Marlene  :pat: The red breasted bird was your friend. I'd be very upset too.

Marlene - March 14, 2008 01:20 PM (GMT)
I ca'n't stop crying.
Just walked outside and it is 100% sure it is my friend the red breast. I gave him food yesterday.
I still have ,my blackbird but it just kjills me this.
Maybe stupid but it hurts like hell.
I want to stop crying. get my mind to something else.

Later I will remove the birdie. Otherwise they cats, will go and walk with him

You're not a coward, he's your friend.

I'm really sorry.

Sorry to hear about this, Marlene...... It would upset me too....

Marlene - March 14, 2008 03:37 PM (GMT)
Guess what?
I think he survived!!!!!!! :o
Right after I posted. boy I made so many typos) my coach arrived.
I told her that the bird was lying there (I had checked again and thought he had died)
I was in tears cause I had to remove the bird. She said she would pick it up.
Then we looked and to my amazement it was not where I had seen it last. lying on his back (side?)

I checked on the other side. it was under a tree, and then I noticed movement. something was there.
We had to go inside.. Then i looked and I thought I even saw him flying.

Too bad I had to do all kind of administration.
She just left and I looked he is really gone and I think he lives!

This is so weird. My cat if she catches something, like a little mouse, she kills them.

I hope my neighbors weren't home cause I was crying like a hysterical baby when I thought he would die.

He has been in my garden. (Only during winters for at least 7 years) and he and my black bird (who I see every day of the year) are really my friends.
(You said that right Gothamgal!! )

I am going back to the garden. The cats are not allowed out of the house today, just in case.
Hope i will see him and I am sure he lives and is okay.

I am so glad I could vent here. Thank you all.

Sometimes a bird if caught will go limp in the cat's mouth and "play dead"

We had a cat who would catch birds , look really proud, and when we took them from here they were usually ok...

Though she was never outside without supervision, so she never had the birds for very long.

I'm glad your bird friend is ok.

Marlene - March 14, 2008 04:50 PM (GMT)
Nim. I am so happy (still not 100% sure but hey he is gone)

The thing I am now so thankful for is that the cat (after I threw a bucket of water over her) came back to me without the bird and wanted to get into the house. At first I declined but now i am soo glad I did let her go back.

Otherwise this birdie would have been dead for sure.

MY God I am still astonished. :o this birdie is a clever one. I think you are right, he must have pretended he was dead cause movement causes the cat to play
(f course that is why he chose me to help him during winters and my garden)

I tried to find him but I guess I have to wait for tomorrow to be sure.

I should not attach myself too much to those wild birds. Every spring and summer life is also hard with all the baby birds who get's killed by cats or crows.

But these 2 are really part of my little family.

Can you imagine my amazement when I looked and there was nobody there. no poor birdie! :bananadance: :bananadance: :bananadance:

As a kid/teen we had a family of squirrel's that were "family" like that too. I reacted the same way as you when I caugt the cat with one of the young ones. My squirrel wasn't as lucky.

I'm so glad your story ended happier. Sorry you had to go through such a horrible time to get to the happy ending though.

I was just reading an article the other day about a town in the US that wants to make it a law that cats can't roam outside because they kill the songbirds.

I know what you mean about hating seeing it suffer but feeling like you can't do anything. Often times I make my boyfriend do the inevitable to end an animal's suffering, even it is a bug. Though, a couple of years ago I was in a store that had glue traps for mice (which are horrible! ) and there was a poor mouse that had obviously been trapped on the glue pad for a while (still alive). I was so upset but I couldn't leave it there to suffer so I took the glue trap outside and ran over the mouse and glue pad with my car to end its suffering. Mice left on those will gnaw off their limbs to try to escape before eventually dying from dehydration. Everytime I see a glue trap placed somewhere I step on it and through it in the trash. :soapbox: Stepping down now...

Marlene - March 14, 2008 05:34 PM (GMT)
I hate mouse traps anyways.
OMG I did not even know this Chambejd. What you did was so good of you. I don't know if I would have had the guts!

I ahte to see anything suffer, bugs, snails.
I safe flies sometimes from spidwerwebs. when they are just caught.

Well I went to the garden this morning cause I still was not sure if he really was okay.
I knew he was at least alive.

Guess what? He was there, waiting for his piece of nuts from me. :bananadance:
For me this is still such a miracle. That cat had it in her mouth not for just a few seconds. I am still so thankful that some instinct told me to let the cat come back in to the house even though i was so angry. Otherwise she would have finished him off.

Plus very grateful that you all were here for me and understood.

This is great news! Congrats Marlene! Your little friend seems very blessed.

Marlene - March 15, 2008 02:58 PM (GMT)
Yes!!
I am really crazy I guess cause now I am wondering, when the cat did discover it was my readbreast, was that why he left him alone and wanted to come inside?

CheriePie - March 15, 2008 07:26 PM (GMT)
Awwww, what a wonderful happy ending Marlene!

Kyrissaean - March 15, 2008 11:06 PM (GMT)
Yay for the little birdie! :D :bananadance:

I'm always worrying about my little outdoor "neighbors" too. This is terrible, but my neighbors across the street moved and I was happy to see them go. They're perfectly nice people they have the meanest cat! All she does is try to kill things all day long! And poop in the flowerbeds -- love planting a litterbox just for her to crap upon. So I hope they've moved someplace where that meanie cat can't catch things so easily, but at least she's not after my little guys anymore!
