Title: Purse I made

Danesnboxers - March 13, 2008 03:26 AM (GMT)
I finally got around to actually making one. Tell me what you think. I thought about selling them at craft fairs in the fall for $8. They measure about 7" tall and 12" wide. Closure is by velcro and there is a pocket inside to hold a cell phone & money, cards or whatever. Of course, a paperback fits just right with plenty of room to spare.

It's really cute! :D :bananadance: Great job!!

And excellent use of a pb to demonstrate the size. :giggle:

PepperVL - March 13, 2008 04:32 AM (GMT)
That is TOO cute!

Can I buy one?

Great purse, but don't you think $8 is kinda low? Maybe just me, but around here you'd pay more than that I think.

Marlene - March 13, 2008 11:49 AM (GMT)
Yes 8 dollars is really cheap for that.

You could also make them for Kids.
In fun patterns like..

Lol. listen to me. I have 2 left hands . I tried to but I never maanged to really be good in sewing and stuff like it.

redhot-brat - March 13, 2008 12:09 PM (GMT)
Very cool ! I agree though you could get more then $8 for them, especially at a craft fair. People are more inclined to pay the extra at craft fairs for "homemade" items, then they do at regular stores. :giggle:

cheesygiraffe - March 13, 2008 01:10 PM (GMT)
Very awesome Diane! I like it. My mother in law made me a purse a couple years back with giraffe fabric. It's cute. I've stained it though. So I don't use it much anymore.

TITurtle1 - March 13, 2008 01:18 PM (GMT)
Very nice! :)

I like the book just peeking out of the purse too... :)

HoserLauren - March 13, 2008 01:40 PM (GMT)
I agree! Up your prices Danes!! :giggle:
I would go for $15 at minimum

Yep that's the cheapest I've seen them sale for is $15.

Gothamgal - March 13, 2008 02:57 PM (GMT)
Yeah, This is GREAT!

However, I think that the $ amount is low--I mean, to those OTHER than bookobsessors, right?

This is really cool. And I might be interested, let me check a few things...

boogal - March 13, 2008 03:15 PM (GMT)
What a nice purse! :) I also agree with others about the price; it should be at least $15.

Danesnboxers - March 13, 2008 04:10 PM (GMT)
I'll probably do around $15 at the craft fairs cause you guys are right - people that go to them do pay more but $8 is going to be for others. When I get a bunch made I'll probably put some on ebay too and have $8 be the start.

morsecode - March 13, 2008 05:06 PM (GMT)
You definitely need to charge more.

I mean - Vera Bradley bags of the same size go for like $40-60

nursiegirl42 - March 13, 2008 05:09 PM (GMT)
$8 is cheap but you all have to remember we live in rural Missouri alot of people out here just dont have the money.. where are the craft shows you are going to have them in.. St Louis? if so you could ask more!

nursiegirl42 - March 13, 2008 05:10 PM (GMT)
I would pay $15 dollars if you could make me one in John Deere fabric.

Gothamgal - March 13, 2008 05:12 PM (GMT)
You may also want to consider Etsy as well as Ebay.

These look like great bags.

lizziwhizz - March 13, 2008 08:21 PM (GMT)
I second the vote for etsy instead of ebay. ebay buyers are looking for a bargain; etsy buyers are looking for quality handmade goods.
i also second nursiegirls comment about rural craft fairs. what some of us think of as a craft fair is different than others. a craft fair for me in rural maine is a church basement where the handbag might sell for $8, but only if I throw in some dinky freebie, too. The aesthetic of handmade is not appreciate the same way when Walmart is not far away.

If you detect bitterness it's because I make handbags and other things and have given up on craft fairs in my area. The last two years I did it I barely covered my table rental and my crap was fricking gorgeous and underpriced. (sorry to toot my own horn  ) I sew for myself and for a few gifts now and have given up on the idea of selling.

Anyway nice work Diane! It looks great and 8 bucks surely wouldn't cover the labor you put into it, I'm sure. Keep up the good work!

Diane

I emailed.

And I agree, you should charge more... though I see your point about ebay... you do have to start low there.

(And I won't object if you only want $8 from me, though I'm certainly willing to pay more!)

You should post a pic or two of your stuff here!

Or at least link to an etsy page in your sig!

ladyjanet - March 13, 2008 09:33 PM (GMT)
These are great! How can you get everything in such a small bag? Oh gee, maybe if I carried less junk... :giggle:

I use a messenger bag or backpack. I pulled $15 in quarters out of the bottom last week. Maybe I need one with wheels.

No probably Union IF I can get a table. It is so popular you have to wait to see if someone decides not to be in it. I haven't checked there may be a waiting list too. I'm going to check out Bourbon too and maybe St. Louis. I haven't decided if I'm going there.

You'd only have to pay me $8 and on payday I can go get some John Deere material (that's the 7th).

Holy Moly it must have been getting heavy.

Thanks for the tip about etsy. I'll have to check it out. I have about 8 orders to fill first from MBS'ers and here.

Hope nobody thought I was posting to get business. although I do appreciate it. :P I just value you guys opinions

Oh! Get enough for me, too, please!! My sister would love that! Great idea, nursie, and great purse, danes! I'll pm you!

jennannej - March 14, 2008 12:36 AM (GMT)
Gotta have the room for a paperback! ;)

I love the style, nice job. The fabric isn't really my style though. And $8 would be *quite* reasonable.

giz-angel - March 14, 2008 09:38 AM (GMT)
I think that is so cheap and so CLEVER - I am a cack hand

But I saw purse and you KNOW I was thinking something to put coins in.... then I saw this amazing BAG

Marlene - March 14, 2008 09:53 AM (GMT)
I am not a handbag person but this one seems like a nice not to big bag.

Don't think my idea was very well liked?

Here all the young girls want to play adult and have bags. ;0

nursiegirl42 - March 14, 2008 03:22 PM (GMT)
Awesome Danes.. any John Deere fabric would do if it would help I can even go pick up the fabric and I could bring it to you Im reasonable... I would like "cute John Deere" though... maybe one with pink in it if not something cartoony maybe I dont know I havent looked at John Deere fabric lately but since we live on a small farm and we own a John Deere tractor I just love that stuff!

Thanks soo much!

I could pick up enough fabric for Chambejd's too just let me know I have to go to Wal mart today and probably Saturday or Sunday too.. I am truly willing to get it.. I can drop it off to you on Monday on my way to STL so let me know!

Marlene, I think it's a great idea to use material for the teens too. I'm just using up the free stuff I have first.

I also had a suggestion to make eyeglass holders but I haven't started that yet.

catsalive - March 15, 2008 04:01 AM (GMT)
That's a fabulous bag, Danes. I love the big squashy ones. Great for fitting in a book, as you say. I'll order one in red or purple or blue or green - a bright one

I don't know how much these things cost in the USA, but I'd buy one for $8.

Marlene - March 15, 2008 09:47 AM (GMT)
Well if I would live near you I would have ordered one for myself babe. Really love them and this is an honour cause i am anti handbags.

SciFisstrs - March 16, 2008 05:23 AM (GMT)
Oh I love it. Great job Diane.
I collect purses. I'm always changing, and looking for something different.

Could I order 2 Diane? One for me and one for my daughter. I know if she sees me with one she'll want one. Such a copy cat she is :giggle:
