Title: SFF Bookclub - Ender's Game - copy scheduling
shaunesay - March 9, 2008 03:32 PM (GMT)
We've chosen Ender's Game as our first read, so now let's figure out who has copies, who needs copies, and who can send to who!
Please post here your status, if you have one, if you need one, and if you're willing to send one when you're finished. Thanks!
Has a copy:
Shaunesay (will share either US or International)
Giz-Angel (will share in Europe)
Wss4 (will share in US)
blackteiwaz (has a copy in Spanish if needed  )
GateGypsy (willing to share, just won't be right away, due to time to read)
Xeyra (has PC copy willing to lend - will save until last if needed)
Elsi (has own copy)
Hobbit (getting library copy)
DragonGoddess (will share if needed)
Luckaye (library copy)
Needs a copy:
Kyrissaean (maybe getting library copy)
Sharing buddies:

I will have a copy courtesy of wss4 who mooched one for me. I am happy to share it with europeans - for the sake of speed - cos it may take me a while to read it, being a genre I am not that used to.
wss4 - March 9, 2008 03:52 PM (GMT)
I have a copy on Mt. TBR and will be happy to share when I am done within the US.
blackteiwaz - March 9, 2008 04:08 PM (GMT)
Great choice!
Not sure if this will be any help at all (probably not) but this is one of my favorite books and I have an extra copy in Spanish if anybody dares...
BTW: good luck finding the rest of the saga, you will want to read it after you are done with Ender's Game :giggle:
GateGypsy - March 9, 2008 06:51 PM (GMT)
I have my own copy of Ender's Game. With how long it will take me to get to it, I don't think I'll be able to share it, but I would definately be willing to pass it on to someone else when I'm done... it just may not be in time to participate with the discussion
I'll take a look at my local used bookstore, too, when I get a chance, to see if they have any copies of it and let y'all know.

that's fine, and there's no end time for discussion either, I've decided they can all be ongoing, we'll just pick a new book about every 2 months (so be thinkin' GG cause you volunteered to go next, remember! ;)), but discussion can be ongoing! I know I never get tired of talking about books I've read, even years later! I always like sharing something that's old to me with someone else, and get refreshed by their excitement in it!
Xeyra - March 9, 2008 08:21 PM (GMT)
I have a copy (and have already read it about three times) and I would like to keep it in my PC, but I'm willing to lend it to anyone in need of it. :)
elsi - March 9, 2008 11:17 PM (GMT)
I have a copy -- have read it at least once and will schedule a re-read. When does discussion begin?
elsi - March 9, 2008 11:39 PM (GMT)
Looking for some discussion starting points, I found the study guide posted on Card's own web site.
http://www.hatrack.com/research/teachers/2004-04-01.shtmlThere are a couple of others online, including the full text of the SparkNotes Study Guide at

This is the one our high school book club is doing so will be fun to see what you all have to say about it too!

Well, I was going to go ahead and post a thread in a few days, so that if anyone wanted to post as they went along, rather than waiting until the end they could do that. The people who don't want spoilers should stay away from the thread until they've finished!
How does that sound to everyone, ok?
And I will have a look at the links that Elsi posted and probably put them in the beginning of our discussion thread so we can find them easy! I was thinking about doing that myself, you just beat me to it! ;)
I had a bookmark here that said he won the Nebula award for it, was it in 1985 maybe? and then he won again the next year for the next book in the series!
Here's a link to the list of Nebula award winners if anyone is interested:
Nebula AwardsIt's looking so far like most of us will have our own copies so far, so we should be in good shape!
shaunesay - March 10, 2008 04:13 AM (GMT)
Here is the 2007 ballot that they will be voting on in April of this year down in Austin Texas, it appears that some of them are available as a PDF if you want to download? I didn't try it, so not sure.
http://www.sfwa.org/awards/2008/NebFinal2007.htmlI just won Odyssey in our first Sci Fi swappy! :giggle:
Oops, scratch that downloading thing, it asked me for a password, so apparently you have to belong to the organization to get those. Sowwy!
nimrodiel - March 10, 2008 02:09 PM (GMT)
If your library does audiobooks (I know mine does ones with online availability to area members), there is a wonderful unabridged audio with Harlan Ellison as one of the narrators.
I just finished listening to this last week (we're going to start Speaker to the Dead next), so I'm looking forward to the discusion.
shaunesay - March 10, 2008 02:30 PM (GMT)
I finally got through the author's introduction to it last night! LOL! I like it when author's do their own intro's or a long author's note at the end, as long as they're funny ;) I love Piers Anthony's author notes, he's just so crotchety and funny!
Anyway, I am now 3 pages into the story!
Xeyra - March 10, 2008 03:09 PM (GMT)
You've already started, shaunie? I must squeeze it into my pile soon!

I'm not sure 3 pages is ambitious enough to deserve the term "starting" lol, though I should get a couple more read tonight. I wanted to get done semi-soon though so I could share if needed.
Okay, 12 peeps voted for Ender, and so far we've only heard from 6 on their status. (I didn't vote, since all three were my idea! ;) )
catsalive - March 11, 2008 05:33 AM (GMT)
I thought this book was brilliant. I put off reading it for years as it looked too SF for me but it was worth the wait. I've already passed on the copy I read, but that's OK as you don't have any Aussie members.
I'll be following your progress with interest. :)

Sorry, I'm on a business trip and slow to respond this week but through the magic of the online card catalog, I've just reserved a copy at my library. Since it's currently checked in, I should be able to get it at the end of the week after I get home.
DragonGoddess - March 12, 2008 10:46 PM (GMT)
Have my own copy and it's quite worn from reading. I think I might have an extra if anyone wants it. Or I wouldn't mind giving away me copy either, as I really should get it in hardback for my PC.

Excuse me?! I am a 6th Generation Aussie, thank you very much! :P
I have it to pick up from the library - just have to get there!
Kyrissaean - March 13, 2008 03:30 AM (GMT)
I don't have a copy yet, but I was going to go see if they have it at the library -- they can probably get it on interlibrary loan if they don't. I just don't have any small cash on my at the moment to pay my overdue fines so I haven't gone in yet!

Kyri! :whip:
It sounds like we have a couple copies available for sharing, so we could probably send you one to save you the library trip if you decide you just can't go! ;)
msjoanna - March 13, 2008 05:09 PM (GMT)
I really enjoyed this book and the series. I'll be looking forward to following along in the discussion.
gailcm - March 14, 2008 10:14 AM (GMT)
I was wondering if I could join in on this? I have a copy of book (TBR). When does it have to be read by?

Yep anyone who wants is welcome. There's no set date you have to be done, we'll just plan to pick our next book in about two months, around the first week of May. But discussions on books can go on forever as far as I'm concerned! :D
wss4 - March 19, 2008 07:44 PM (GMT)
The copy that I mooched for Giz arrived today. I will be sending it out to her on Saturday.

You weren't on the list when I posted :P
shaunesay - March 21, 2008 02:50 AM (GMT)
how's everyone doing? got your copies? started reading? I got about 50 pages in, and then the week from hell hit at work so I've not gotten back to it yet. I'm struggling with Wicked by Gregory Maguire since I actually owe that one to geishabird, I just want to get it over with, and it seems like every time I look, I've got more pages left instead of fewer! I really want to just quit, but at 300 pages in, I hate to give up! PAIN! LOTS OF PAIN!
Hopefully now that said week from hell is just about over, I can perhaps get some more reading done before the month is actually OVER!
shaunesay - March 24, 2008 02:15 AM (GMT)
I haven't really seen anyone yet say that they definitely needed a copy, everyone seems to have a plan on how to get one if they don't already have one, is that true?
I'm happy to send mine along when I'm done, if anyone still needs one, please speak up!
I'm enjoying it a lot so far, it's giving me a lot to think about, so I'm glad we chose this one!
wss4 - March 24, 2008 10:32 AM (GMT)
I mailed Giz's copy on Saturday so she should have it within the week.
I have not gotten a chance to start yet as I am trying to get some owed TBRs out of the way and know that once I read this one I will want to continue on with the series. But will be starting it soon
shaunesay - March 27, 2008 03:11 AM (GMT)
Teachie has put a copy of Ender's in the SFF VBB, so if any of you need one, and you're in the box, be on the look out, you might be able to snag it!
shaunesay - April 1, 2008 03:19 AM (GMT)
I have finished it today, so if anyone does need a copy, let me know and I can send it along. Otherwise I'll be keeping it PC, as I know the husband will enjoy it too!
