Title: A question for the Canadians
SciFisstrs - March 8, 2008 09:32 AM (GMT)
As you know by now my daughter works for Build A Bear Workshop. When she came home tonight from work she showed me this paper. Down at the bottom it has some math problem for Canadian residents only. She asked if I could ask here what this means. She thought it was a joke. She said why would anyone put something like that on paper?
Anyways I tried to scan it as clear as I could. It's towards the bottom and I think it is clear enough . I put it as an attachment. If you click on it to expand and zoom in on it it ts readable.

I found this funny when I moved to Canada and first saw this. Apparently it is the result of some law. Here is a site with more info:
Why Canadian Contests Have Skill Testing Questions

My first thought was does it also say somthing about excluding Quebec residents?
Almost all contests have this "skill testing question" and many contests are not open to residents of Quebec. I knew it had to do with a law, but didn't know what exactly!

That is so bizarre. Enter a contest, must do math. Stupid people need not enter!

I know that when I was sweeping a lot online, anytime we came across a contest that allowed both US and Canadian entry, that the Canadian entries had to answer some type of skill test. Usually they were very basic ones and only there to cover that particular rule.

Never heard of this one and it is not a joke? :o

How about:
If everyone sends one book, how many will be duplicates, and how long will it take to read them all, how big of a Christmas gift do you have to give your postman, and what are the odds of your spouse leaving you? That's a four part question.
:giggle:

Wow what a strange law. I'll send the link to my daughter to see. I think she will think it stupid too.
Thanks all for the help

Not really "stupid"... more "profit minded". Remember, by removing the luck factor, it means that the sweepstakes sponsor can profit from the endeavor.
 Honestly, I was so used to seeing that "skill testing question" I didn't realize nobody else did it!

Ditto!
When GM was holding a "ring in to win" contest over a year ago, we were told by the car salesman what the answer to the "skill testing question" was so we wouldn't actually need to sit there and fill it out
