Now you will have to buy some more bookshelves

Oooooooh I love BookOff!! There was one a couple of blocks from my job. Many a lunch hour was spent there and in the New York Public Library's book donation room. The great part about that was nearby publishing companies would donate their overruns to both places. With BookOff's dollar shelf I was able to get LOTS of brand new books! I still stop by everytime I go into the city.

Really? I bet you have more than I do since you live in Philly. I live in smallish medium size town in Alabama and the closest interstate highway is an hour away. :erm:

Jealous!!!!

as well as the loud welcoming shouts of the staff that spread throughout the store each time a customer enters.

uh, yeah, no.... I don't want my arrival announced to the entire store thanks... I always had issues with this when I worked at B. Dalton's, I hated that we were supposed to greet each customer... hello, we're bookworms, we don't TALK to people, we're INTROVERTED! So are our customers! And you're asking us to torture them. I got downgraded one time on a secret shop because I was on the phone when a customer entered (so I'm supposed to interrupt the customer on the phone, to talk to the customer in the store, that would really irritate me as the customer on the phone), nevermind that I then spent half an hour with the lady, making suggestions and such when she asked me a question. I'm so not cut out for service industries...

That aside, I'm sure I'd go to a Book Off if one miraculously appeared here. 866 stores in Japan, and Japan just isn't that big... I wonder how many Starbucks they have...

oh yeah, I remember your lunch book sale trips. Weren't you hiding things so you could go back and get them later?

Wow. That looks amazing!

lexilewords - March 9, 2008 02:17 PM (GMT)
Book off is possibly one of the best inventions ever. Not only can I get cheap English books (and often I get cheap hard to find ones...like the complete Roswell series for $1 each), but I can get cheap Japanese manga, Cd's, DVD's and ARTBOOKS. OMG every time I go in there I hit Artbook Gold...(I nearly died when I found the Tamura Yumi 'Basara' Artbooks, both of them for $10 each in PERFECT wrapped condition. They got for about $35 USED on ebay and they are very much out of print...)

Now I know where I am going the next time I am in the Costa Mesa area! I never knew they had one there!

yeah I totally hid stuff! Both at BookOff and at the NYPL! And I would always check the books that were shelved spine-side in cause I figured if I hid stuff, other people probably did too!!

lol I didn't mind them calling out when I entered - I never knew what they were saying anyway! What I remember is that they would always play pop/bubblegum music and if I was there long enough, the tune would get in my head and I'd find myself trying to sing along only to realize the words weren't in English! But...but... it was so catchy!!

Can someone tell me what Bookoff is? Discounted books?

I see that the one in NYC is just a 5 minute walk from Grand Central Station. I might have to check that out sometime I feel like taking the train into the city.

Oh sweet mother. As the introvert of all introverts, I don't think I have to explain how much I would HATE that. :o

You've ruined my budget. I'm heading to NYC in 2 weeks and now I have found a place to spend a lot of money!

xallroyx - March 18, 2008 05:30 AM (GMT)
I had to drive through Costa Mesa tonight, so I had to check this store out. All I can say is Wow! I only went down two aisles and filled up my basket. I got two bags of books and it was only $24!! Some good books on the $1 shelves. I will go there again!!
