Title: New furry Baby (Merlin has arrived!)
Description: And help with old baby

We have always been a one cat family, but when a friend was fostering four kittens for the pound, we just couldn't resist...
So we went to look a tthem, maybe 8 weeks old, weaned but tiny and all white with maybe some siamese- blue eyes, brown ears and tails. So we wanted a famale, but they all looked the same under the tail. It took DH about thirty minutes of playing to pick one (not the one I wanted, but one more playful.

So we get home and Sparkle, the most loving attentive cat I've ever seen, does nothing but hiss and growl at the kitten. And at home in good light, I think we have a male.

So- we can take this one back and trade for a female, but the boys (Dh and DS) like it. Not bonded, but are friends.

But can anyone here answer some male cat questions for me?

If he's neutered, will males still spray?

If I have a male and a female, will he bully the other cat? (It's ok if she bullies him because she's Primo Feline. :giggle: )

How long does it take for cats to get used to each other? Sparkle still hisses when ever she passes him if he's awake, but she's not stalking him or attacking him. (He's sleeping in the cat carrier for a few days, until we are confident she won't hurt him while we are gone or asleep.) Right now she's sitting outside the crate with her nose against the bars, and he's asleep. She's quiet, not making a sound.

Will they share a litter box ok? Sparks is very tidy in her box- pees on one end, poops on the other. (Yeah TMI- )

And we don't have a name yet, since we aren't positive we are keeping him. He does have a broken tail- just about a half inch from the end. Have no idea how that happened.

I've only had female cats so I can't help you with that but I'd get another kitty litter box. I noticed mine were never good at sharing it.
If you do keep him we wanna see pics. :D

It's best to let cats get used to each other gradually. You'll likely have an easier time since the new one is a kitten, but you're still going to have issues. Sparkle feels like he has intruded in her territory.

Keep them in separate rooms for a while, and only let them be together in your presence. Pay lots of attention to Sparkle, particularly when the new guy is around, and for a while try not to let her see you giving him much attention. It can take several weeks for them to get used to each other.

Bullying is completely going to depend on the cats personalities.

My male cats only go outside the litterbox when I'm a bad cat mommy and don't clean it out. If it gets too full, the one will go elsewhere to let me know that I REALLY need to get on that. And then, of course, you need to get it cleaned up with enzymes, or they'll keep going there. Once a place smells like cat pee, it's okay for them to use it (in their minds, anyway).

One litterbox can work for multiple cats (I have to make it as there's no room in my apartment for two), but the BEST thing is to have one more litterbox than cats.

It will take some work to get them to like each other, but it can be done. Heck, I introduced two adult males to each other, and while they're not bosom buddies, we all live peacefully (most of the time, anyway). :D

One litterbox each is definitely the way to start, and then you can always cut it back to one much later on and see if that works. They need to both feel secure (and clean!).
One of each sex should get on better than two females together, I've read.
And if you get him neutered before 6 months old (when the hormones really start to kick in  )he won't spray.
When we got the second of our two cats, they hated each other for 2 weeks and we were thinking of giving up the second one, but we woke up one morning and they were cuddled up in bed together. It was so cute, one tabby/white and one black - they looked like yin and yang. :D
Good luck with your cutie - and let us know when you decide on a name!

I read or heard somewhere that Siamese cats can have crooked tails. So if your kitty is all or part Siamese, the tail is probably just crooked, not broken. Cute kitty, by the way.

Awwww, I want a kitty - so cute!

I had a male kitten and a female adult many years ago. She hissed at him and pushed him around a little at first but never anything violent. It probably took a month before they were easy with each other, and several months before they were friends. But it did happen, and they were great together! They shared a litterbox with no problem although if you can manage two in your space, I'm sure it will help.

I also had a male that sprayed (not that one) but he was neutered a bit late. The enzyme sprays rock - I remember when they were first introduced and how happy I was to get something that worked. All the things they told us to try before that (vinegar, lemon juice, ...) didn't work.

Now i want another kitty(the hubby says no). My cat Romeo is male and we got him "fixed" at 4 months and he has never sprayed. We had got a another male kitten at one point and Romeo was very jealous and domineering for about 3 weeks then layed off. However i babysat a female cat 2 different times for my brother in law and they never got along. They all shared a litter box. Some cats are cleaner than others and will start going outside their box if it's invaded. You'll just have to see.

I took him to the vet today for a peek, and he's all boy. They said 8 months to neuter him, but I think I'll try for 6 months. They told me about the siamese kink in the tail too. I think he has a name now. He has an "M" on his forehead so he's Merlin. (I wanted Mad Max but DS said no. )

He howled all the way to the vet and back. I guess he's not a car cat. Sparkle is fine. She sits in the back window and looks out. He's been asleep most of the day. Exhausted by the car trip, I guess.

Thanks for all your help. They seem to be sharing a box OK now. Sparkle doesn't seem to mind, but I usually clean it after Merlin uses it. He's been wormed, but until his exam in a couple weeks, I'm being careful.

He has three little sisters, but I don't think they'll go media mail. :giggle:

k_kay- Hubby said no second cat.....Very firm. I told him how proud I was of him for not caving if he really felt that way, and the next day he folded like a house of cards. He asked me "When can we go see those kittens?" out of the clear blue sky.

Kitty update:
They are now the best of friends. It took three days and an hour long game of "Pounce" and now they are fine together. They are using the same litter box and trying to eat each other's food. :nono: I had a nap yesterday with big kitty on my lap asleep and little kitty on my shoulder asleep. Little kitty still sleeps overnight in the cat carrier because he can get into all kinds of trouble, but he's fine with it.

DH is worried about Mt TBR falling on little kitty because he tries to climb all over it.
