Title: New York, NY
Description: May 10-11, 2008

msjoanna - March 4, 2008 04:14 PM (GMT)
See below. We're now discussing the possibility of a get together May 10 or 11, 2008.

Two UK BCers have contacted me about a meetup in New York: Wildfloweres and yesterdaysgirl.

Seems like the perfect excuse to try again to get the local BOers together.

We need to pick somewhere wheelchair accessible, but other than that, things are flexible.

Relevant dates: March 17-30.

I propose Saturday, Mar. 29 at 10 a.m. -- location to be announced.

Any interest?

I like the 22nd, but the 29th is okay, too. It gives me plenty of time to work out my schedule at work.

AlterEgoZoe - March 4, 2008 07:02 PM (GMT)
The next time I'll be in the city is on the 23 for obligatory family dinner.

I was thinking of "not Easter" since I figured folks might have family obligations...

But if Easter works better...we could do that. It isn't my holiday....

 not mine either, but I am required to be there anyhow, you know? If there's another day, I can be there, I'll let you guys know. :)

I've just heard from the two UKers that the weekend of Mar. 22-23 doesn't work for their schedule, so it looks like Mar. 29 is the date, unless we want to do something during the week.

If you know other BCers or BOers who might be interested, please point them over here...

lexilewords - March 5, 2008 12:05 AM (GMT)
I'm pretty sure I can make it. I'll know once I get closer to the date (since it falls between paychecks but during the time when I get hit by two big bills.) :)

boogal - March 5, 2008 12:55 PM (GMT)
So is the 29th official?

hobbit - March 6, 2008 03:38 PM (GMT)
:peek:

By NY, I assume we mean Manhattan? I might be able to take the train in on the 29th if that's the date. Afternoon would be perfect as I could be home to go dancing in the evening. I can't join you if it's during the week.

I've never met any BO or BCers in person. I assume I should bring books?

I'll await further instructions.

msjoanna - March 6, 2008 03:47 PM (GMT)
I'm told that if we want to meet the UKers, we need to do it in the morning as they have to head to the airport in the afternoon.

I'm thinking brunch somewhere on the upper west side (which is where they're staying) around 10 a.m.

I need to go scope locations for wheelchair access.

chambejd - April 22, 2008 01:10 AM (GMT)
Did you guys end up meeting in March?

If not (or even if you did), would you want to try another get-together the weekend of May 11th and 12th? I'm coming down for two nights this time (Fri and Sat) so I'll have more free time to plan something. I've already made my boyfriend aware that I'll need some time for my bookobsessed friends. We'll be staying in the financial district (probably Embassy Suites Hotel New York City at 102 North End Ave.) but I am flexible about a meeting location as long as I can find my way. So, anyone up for meeting??

I dropped the ball in March. The UK BCers turned out not to be very flexible in planning and we couldn't set a time/place that worked for them, and I got busy with other stuff...and...erm... :erm: :erm:

Anyway, I'd be interested in getting together in May -- I presume you mean the 10th and 11th?

That weekend is Mother's Day, which makes no difference to me as neither my mother nor my mother-in-law are expected in town, but I thought I'd mention it. I have a baby shower on Saturday during the middle of the day, but would be free in the evening or any time on Sunday.

boogal - April 22, 2008 01:04 PM (GMT)
I'd be interested in getting together. Saturday evening sounds good.

chambejd - April 22, 2008 01:08 PM (GMT)
Yes, you are right, I do mean the 10th and 11th. That's what I get for being lazy and guessing at the dates!

Well I'm pretty flexible so hopefully we can meet up! We are actually coming down Friday evening and we will probably leave Sun. afternoon. I think we are going to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on Sat. morning but other than that we don't have any set plans. Hopefully some others can join us... :)

msjoanna - May 1, 2008 01:58 PM (GMT)
Just bumping this up...

One possible meeting place would be Max Brenner's chocolate shop:

See info here
841 Broadway (between 13th & 14th)

The reason to pick this place is that it's right across the street from The Strand Bookstore...giving us the possibility of at least browsing their outdoor carts with $0.48 mass markets and $1 trade paperbacks and hardbacks.

Note: I've never actually eaten/had anything to drink at Max Brenner's, though I've walked by this one and one of its other branches frequently.

chambejd - May 1, 2008 02:39 PM (GMT)
Max Brenner's and The Strand sound good to me. I'd love to try the Mexican Hot Chocolate. Thanks for suggesting a place! Saturday late afternoon/evening works for me.

boogal - May 1, 2008 04:18 PM (GMT)
 Sounds great!

hobbit - May 2, 2008 12:15 AM (GMT)
:o Bookobsessors planning to meet at a chocolate shop near a great bookstore on an evening when I'll be in Manhattan! OMG!

Sadly, the reason I'll be there is taking my son and student to a play (Young Frankenstein) for my son's 18th birthday and I'm not sure that they'd consider this a fun part of the the trip ... I will talk to them and see if we can come up with a plan that would allow me to join you.

chambejd - May 2, 2008 12:36 AM (GMT)
Hobbit, it would be great if you could join us, even if you don't get to stay long. Of course, everyone who will be joining us is welcome to look over my AVLs to see if there is anything that you want. I don't have many good AVL books but if there is something that catches your eye, please let me know!

CharmedKim - May 7, 2008 01:43 PM (GMT)
I just wanted to confirm that we're definitely meeting up on Saturday...

chambejd - May 7, 2008 01:57 PM (GMT)
I still want to do it. All we need is a time if everyone is good with the meeting location. Joanna, what time is your baby shower and what time would work best for you? Boogal, do you have any time restrictions? I'm pretty flexible but 5pm or later is probably better for me since we are going to be out doing some touristy things in the morning/afternoon.

I get out of work at 4pm so 5pm or later is good for me, too.

msjoanna - May 7, 2008 04:19 PM (GMT)
Shall we say 5:30pm?

That I could also do 5 if you want to meet earlier. I should be back in Manhattan around 4.

chambejd - May 7, 2008 04:36 PM (GMT)
5:30 is good with me!

CharmedKim - May 8, 2008 01:54 AM (GMT)
5:30 sounds good.

hobbit - May 9, 2008 01:10 PM (GMT)
Our play is at 2pm, and my son has agreed that it would be okay to stop by and try to meet up with you. We'll want to get something to eat anyway before getting on the train. We'd probably be getting over there around 5:30 or 6, depending on what time the play actually ends.

chambejd - May 12, 2008 04:52 PM (GMT)
I had a great time meeting you guys on Saturday! Thanks for making my trip to NYC even better! Msjoanna, CharmedKim (aka boogal), Hobbit and I met up at Max Brenner's and had great Mexican Hot Chocolate! Hobbit's son, Chinese exchange student and his friend also met up with us. I have photos but I can't post them from work. If someone wants to post them sooner, pm me with your email address and I'll email them to you!

Thanks for sharing! If I can get any of my teenagers to share with me, I'll be happy to send out the ones they took, also. (Although they wouldn't be very different from this.)

HoserLauren - May 14, 2008 09:32 PM (GMT)
Aww look at you guys!! :D

SciFisstrs - May 29, 2008 06:32 AM (GMT)
