Once I had a book, I lost, I finally found it.. but I ACTUALLY got a letter from the District Attorney's office about my $40 fine! I paid it.. but all i could think was that these people are NUTS :bash:

It killed me to pay the $23 fine I had last month. I can't imagine they'd put someone in jail over $23 though. :erm:

I once had a $50 fine - I couldn't get anything out of the library for about 6 months until I could finally pay it. :scream:

I knew there was a reason for so many people to join Bookcrossing when we have such well stocked libraries. No fines for taking your time to send a book!!!!!!!!!!!!

That beats out the 2003 record according to a Guinness book I have here -- a woman from Florida spent 8 hours in jail before someone managed to post bail for her on a fine that was worth 78 british pounds, though I wouldn't know how much that was in American dollars.
