Title: SFF Bookclub - round 1 - book poll
Description: vote for our first book!

shaunesay - March 2, 2008 11:45 PM (GMT)
Alrighty, I volunteered to go first, since I had this brilliant idea  so here are three that I've either heard were really good, or been wanting to read for some time, they're all a bit older, so hopefully they'll be available at the library, somewhere online for free, or as a paperback edition at a used store. Of course I am also willing to share mine in a club ring here as well. Please choose the two that sound the best to you, and the one with the most votes will get it! I hope I've picked out some that sound good to you all! Voting will be open until I get up next Sunday Morning (March 9th) Please only vote if you are intending to take part in the club, thanks!

Good Omens - Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett

According to the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter -the world's only _totally reliable_ guide to the future - the world will end on a Saturday.

Next Saturday, in fact.
Just after tea.
Which means that Armageddon will happen on a Saturday night.
There will be seas of fire, rains of fish, the moon turning to blood and the massed armies of Heaven and Hell will sort it outonce and for all.

Which is a major problem for Crowley, Hell's most approachable demon and former serpent, and his opposite number and old friend Aziraphale, genuine angel and Soho bookshop owner. They like it down here (or, in Crowley's case, up here).

So they've got no alternative but to stop the Four Motorcyclists of the Apocalypse, defeat the marching ranks of the Witchfinder's army* and - somehow - stop it all happening.

Above all (or, in Aziraphale's case, below all) they need to find and kill the Antichrist, currently the most powerful creature on Earth.

This is a shame.
Because he's eleven years old, loves his dog even though it's really a Satanic hellhound under all that hair, really cares about the environment and is the sort of boy anyone would be proud to have as a son. He's also totally invulnerable, and a nice kid.

And if that isn't enough, they've still got Sunday to deal with. . .

* All two of them.

Bazil Broketail - Christopher Rowley (#1 of the Bazil Broketail series)

From an award-winning science fiction author comes a rousing dragon fantasy debut reminiscent of dragon mistress Anne McCaffrey's bestselling works. Aided by a hideous terror known as the Doom, dark forces have kidnapped the heir to the throne of Marneri. Now it falls to Battle Dragon Bazil Broketail and his Orphanboy Relkin to rescue her and save their world.

(I couldn't find much of a write up for this one, and the back of the book was too long to type in!)

Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card (#1 of the Ender Wiggin Series)

When humanity is under threat from an alien race, Ender Wiggin, at the age of six, leaves his family on Earth to journey to the Belt. There he enters Battle School, where his life is strictly disciplined by mind games and computer mock-battles fought in deadly earnest. Instinct, compassion and genius make Ender unequalled. But while he trains, the invasion approaches fast. And Ender will be pushed to the limits of endurance, for his is a unique destiny...

I chose either Good Omens or Enders Game. I have both of those on Mt. TBR. I have heard of Brazil Broketail and have it on my wishlist, but don't have a copy of it yet.

ETA-- I went ahead and ordered a copy of Brazil Broketail from BookMooch just to be safe.

shaunesay - March 3, 2008 03:45 AM (GMT)
I'm going to have to find me an Ender's Game if it ends up being that one, I could have sworn I had it already, but can't find it anywhere... of course, I have not yet scoured the boxes down in the dungeon, so it's hard to say!

Kyrissaean - March 3, 2008 04:17 AM (GMT)
I just voted for the two I don't (think I) have!

hobbit - March 3, 2008 03:00 PM (GMT)
I voted for Bazil and will go order a copy now.

I'm not a Terry Pratchett fan, so I'd probably skip it this time if we do that book.
I've read Enders Game, and would consider re-reading it - it was a fabulous book. I'll hunt through my shelves to see if I've still got it.

Bazil Broketail - Christopher Rowley

I have a copy of this book if anyone needs it. Just PM with your address! :D

Xeyra - March 3, 2008 04:44 PM (GMT)
I have Good Omens (in portuguese) and Ender's Game but I've read them both already. I wouldn't mind re-reading any of them, though. :)

Bazil Broketail looks great too, but I'd have to find a copy of that one. All in all, I'm cool with any of them! :P

GateGypsy - March 4, 2008 12:21 AM (GMT)
I read Good Omens (a bookring) recently, and I actually just recently acquired a copy of Enders Game, so that might work out

giz-angel - March 4, 2008 09:15 AM (GMT)
I've read Good Omens I voted for Ender's Game as it's already on my wish list

You may want to give Good Omens a shot.

Terry Pratchett writing with Neil Gaiman is a different voice than Terry Pratchett by himself (or Neil Gaiman by himself, for that matter).

Of course, I'm a fan of both of their writing, but...

You COULD always borrow my copy, but be warned it is well loved (it is one of my favorites)....or actually, I think I may have a spare. I try to keep extras and give them to people (I hooked a more than a dozen people to the Ender's saga at the bowling alley last summer!)

I haven't read Good Omens yet, but it is somewhere in the giant mess that is my mount TBR.

I'd have to hunt down Bazil, but would be willing to give it a go.

So, I guess I don't much care what we read! :P

Lemonitsa - March 5, 2008 04:18 AM (GMT)
I have not read any of the authors, so I won't vote, but I'll follow your lead. That way I can learn something. :)

Seriously.

I haven't read any of them either! So vote for the ones that sound the most interesting to you, that's what this is all about, trying out new stuff! ;)

a couple more days to decide, it's looking like a bunch of us might finally read Ender's Game though ;)

Or re-read it.

Last chance to vote everyone! I'll make the official announcement tomorrow morning and we can start organizing copies for everyone!

wss4 - March 8, 2008 10:42 PM (GMT)
Going to dust off my copy of Enders Game. :giggle:

The good news (or could be bad, depending on how much I like it) is that I have the rest of the series on Mt. TBR as well.

giz-angel - March 8, 2008 10:51 PM (GMT)
I can't mooch it and the only copy on ebay wants over £5 (about $11) in postage even though they are in the UK :o

So I may well buy a new copy :erm:

Although there is a copy on bookmooch if someone in the US would grab it for me and send it? It's a US only postage  I have plenty points...

luckaye - March 8, 2008 11:17 PM (GMT)
I have a copy of Bazil winging its way from Canada via BookMooch. I guess I will head on over to the library website and reserve a copy of Ender's game. I think I may have read it before, but it was many years ago! :giggle:

I found a copy of Ender today as well at HPB, so I think we should have plenty of copies hanging around to share hopefully.

Okay! Looks like Ender's Game it is! I'll post an organization thread for us so that we can see who has copies, who needs copies, and who can send to who!

PepperVL - March 9, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
I'm probably going to sit this round out, then.

I've read Ender's Game, twice actually, and while I enjoyed it, I currently have too much on Mount TBR to read it again. And both times I read it were too long ago for me to intelligently discuss it.

:(

I understand, hopefully we'll catch you next time! I figured people will participate or skip as the book sounds good. You can read through our talk thread anyway and maybe something'll jar your memory that you want to say then. ;)
