Title: Things you wouldn't ever do...
Description: but still want to share!
shaunesay - March 2, 2008 05:03 PM (GMT)
So I've gotten a little more into wild releasing lately... a side effect of this seems to be developing a radar for benches wherever they are. Hubby and I are driving to the Post Office yesterday to check the box and mail out some books (yay KathyB! They're finally on the way!) and on the way is a cemetary. We've driven by this cemetary all the time, and I've always known there's a bench in there, but finally it registers... a bench... hmmm.... so says I to hubby... do you think it would be bad to release a book in there sometime... and he looks at me like I've finally lost it, so I quickly qualify, you know, something uplifting, Chicken Soup for the Soul books or something... Ok, no, I know, bad idea. I wasn't really serious, because I take people's feelings over that kind of thing very seriously and would never mess with someone as they're visiting a loved one's grave, so I dismissed it right away as a viable thing to do... however, the thoughts just wouldn't stop coming... how about a themed release? Tombs of Endearment, or the Chick and the Dead, or how about Halfway to the Grave? We were laughing so hard it hurt. He says actually, you should release Halfway to the Grave at the morgue instead... oh,you know it's bad when you have a hubby that starts "helping" on the bad ideas! LMAO!
Anyway... I'm sure that's a bit jumbled above, but it was just so funny I wanted to share it (even though I would NEVER do it, because I'd be too afraid of upsetting someone for real!)
I'm Shaunie, and this is how BC has warped... uh, I mean, helped me... ;)

Maybe you could leave a book about coping with loss or something?
Uh, that probably was just as bad!!
Sunlightbub - March 2, 2008 05:45 PM (GMT)
Bad Shaunie :whip:
 at hubby hlping with the ideas!

Thanks for the giggle. Perhaps on the bench you could leave a copy of One foot in the Grave . :giggle:

I've seen cemetery releases (on bookcrossing, I mean - I've never actually seen a book myself at a cemetery). I'll bet GoryD does 'em
What I'm *sure* I've seen is people releasing a book at the grave of the book's author (then it's not really offensive because most or all of the people at the grave are tourists and fans of the author anyway).

Well I actually left a book called Grave Secrets in a cemetery before. And my friends thought I'd finally gone over the deep end.

I might be in the minority here, but I don't see anything wrong with cemetery releases. I don't do wild releases anywhere for my own reasons, but the way I see this is that the real mourners are very unlikely to be noticing a book laying there, and TONS of people visit cemeteries and I would think it might make a good place for getting a catch out of it. I used to walk through a cemetery as a shortcut on my way to and from work for a period of time - I'd have been happy to find a book on a bench by the path. I'm also one of those who enjoys wandering through cemeteries anywhere, I just find them interesting. If I was in a cemetery during a period of mourning and saw a book there, I wouldn't personally find it one bit offensive, though I'm sure some people would - there are always people who will find any given thing offensive, right? So, for me, I don't think this is a bad idea at all! :)

I was glad to see your post Rosie because as I was reading through this, I was thinking, okay maybe I just don't get it but what's wrong with leaving a book in a cemetary? I don't see anything wrong or politically incorrect about it at all. But then again, I think I'm kind of known for my unconventional everything!
When we were in Charleston, Nou and I did a couple of cemetery releases. Okay so it's probably the best we had that had to actually do with a graveyard, which was actually next to the church. So perhaps it wasn't really a cemetery at all. Not sure if there's a difference between the two.

I have to confess, I have done a couple of cemetery releases myself.
I have a rather strange relationships with cemeteries. I actually love them :giggle: The one that my grandparents are buried in and relatives
of most of my friends and church members is just a mile down the road
from me and in the summer I often do my walking there while doing some
grave maintaining (I am known to plants flowers at varies stones that
don't have someone taking caring of them and thus keeping up with the watering
and weeding)
I find cemeteries very peaceful, and full of so much history.
I'm a strange little bird, I know.

Well, I've seen some things that you'd never thing were offensive, just send people off the deep end, so I try to be careful. I'm not saying it's wrong to do it at all, I just wouldn't want to upset anyone. And the themed titles were seeming a bit irreverent to me... but then I'm probably pretty conservative in a lot of ways.

 It's alright.. I think everybody feels different about cemeteries. Some people feel a reverence for them while others are creeped out by them and others feel right at home in them.

I fall in the first two... this particular cemetary is newer, and that causes me to be more cautious. Plus, a friend of mine has one of her children buried there (one of twins that didn't make it) and so having been to an actual ceremony there, I think that makes me feel a little different about it. Now, if it were an older, more historical and touristy cemetary, absolutely I might release something there. ;)

Although I don't maintain stones or do any planting, I feel the same way you do about cemetaries, Liz. Love walking around...

Just think of the JE's:
"I felt someone waling over my grave, so at midnight when we all get up and stretch our legs, I found a copy of "Sex and the Single Vampire" on my stone. I stayed up reading all night, and just laughed myself to death! Just before sunrise I left it over on Old Mr. Marley's grave. He was a lawyer when alive and he appreciates bloodsuckers." Posted by BookGhoul.
I love cemeteries. And if I was there visiting my family and found a book, I'd think maybe someone else found the area just a peaceful. I do think that some books, like slasher books, true crime, etc might not be appropriate, but other books would be fine. No King or Koontz.
