Title: SFF Bookclub - Hosting Duties

shaunesay - March 1, 2008 01:04 AM (GMT)
Step 1 - determine interest! Check!
Step 2 - decide how to structure! Check! (we'll go with the different host each time selecting 1 book, however they'd like to, by their own choice, by a poll, etc.)
Step 3 - collect hosts!

We're on our way folkses! Please post here if you are interested in being a host, duties as follows:

1. selecting a book for the group - do this however you'd like, tell us which one, or host a poll of several selections, however you'd like to do it.

2. maybe toss out some questions of your own that you want to talk about in the book (I'll be posting the discussion threads and trying to keep us organized, so I'll post some generalized easy things like favorite character, favorite scene etc. just stuff to try and get some discussion going)

I'm thinking it's as simple as that! Who wants to be a host? You do not have to host to participate in reading and discussion obviously, and you don't have to have signed up initially either, if you see us reading something that sounds good and want to join in, by all means do! The more the merrier!

Hosts:
1. Shaunesay (hosted March/April with Ender's Game)
2. PepperVL
3. Elsi
4. Lexilewords
5. Kyrissaean
6. GateGypsy (hosting May/June with ???)
7. DragonGoddess
8. Xeyra
9. Wss4 (hosting July/August with ???)
??

another question for the group: do you like the two month general time period to find and read, maybe share the book with others in the group? Do you think it needs to be longer, shorter? Let me know!

PepperVL - March 1, 2008 04:04 AM (GMT)
I'd be willing to host, but I want a couple of people to host before me first! (I'm happy with position 3 or 4 or later... I just don't want position 1 or 2)

elsi - March 1, 2008 04:32 AM (GMT)
I'd be glad to host from time to time. I've got so much going on at work from now through mid-May, so it's probably best if someone else will lead the first round or two.

shaunesay - March 2, 2008 02:02 AM (GMT)
'allo!!!! where are all my people?! :whip: I *know* that more of you want to be host-type peeps! I just know it!

lexilewords - March 2, 2008 03:31 AM (GMT)
i will and I will try very hard to stick with books that everyone can find easily XD (so I guess I won't be choosing Joyce Ballou Gregorian's Tredana trilogy...aw shucks...)

yeah, we'll definitely have to stick to things that shouldn't be too hard to find, and be willing to share. so I'm sorry, but the latest $25 hardback of something is probably out!

Kyrissaean - March 2, 2008 05:27 AM (GMT)
OK, add me to the list of people willing to give it a go but too chicken to take an early slot! :giggle:

GateGypsy - March 2, 2008 07:44 AM (GMT)
I'll take an early slot! I'll be #2. ('cause I can't be #1 with school.)

This'd be my first time being the hostess/person in charge of stuff here, so I hope you all will bear with me

giz-angel - March 2, 2008 12:58 PM (GMT)
No point me hosting unless you all wanna read a nice John Wyndham???

It's not going to be a huge in charge thing, no worries... the biggest responsibility is just deciding what book you want to have the group read. There's no pressure on questions or anything like that, it was just mostly if there were certain things you wanted to talk about, which is the same for anyone on the book, whether they were the host or not. This isn't going to be rigidly structured at all, with hard questions like you'd get in English class about how everything seems to relate back to Man's Inhumanity to Man  this is purely for the fun of reading a book together and being able to talk about what you liked or didn't like, etc.

I don't know that I ever have read one, so if that's what you want everyone to read and it's pretty accessible...

It sounds like I'm getting to go first though, since no one else wants to! I guess that's only fair since it WAS my silly idea in the first place! ;)

shaunesay - March 2, 2008 02:41 PM (GMT)
We could also alternate if we wanted, since it seemed like a lot of people liked the nominate idea as well, we could have a host and then have everyone nominate or something... I dunno, we'll just have to see how it goes!

Alright, I guess I'll officially volunteer to go first, since no one else wants thats privilege! I've got a couple three books in mind, so I'll post a poll later today to see which you all want to start our club with! :)

And just a note, to me, it is perfectly acceptable to choose a book you've already read if you just really wanted to talk about it, or I wouldn't be worried if the book you choose to read a lot of people already have, as long as they're willing to talk about it again, that's fine with me. Honestly one of my choices will probably be like that, I've just heard a lot of good things about it but may be the only person that hasn't read it yet, I don't know! We'll just have to see! :)

DragonGoddess - March 2, 2008 02:56 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't mind hosting. Put my name on your list, baby!

I think its simply marvelous, but then I love those sorts of stories of a girl traveling to another land and finding out she is the heir to the throne (or some such thing). it reminds me quite a bit of 'The Secret Country' trilogy by Pamela Dean (which in turn reminds me of the Narnia books). Unfortunately the author died and the books have been out of print for almost as long as my sister's been born (15 years or so).

I only know about it because I stumbled upon the whole trilogy while at Goodwill one day (in perfect condition!)

Well, I guess you can add me as a volunteer to host too. As long as I don't have to think hard, I should be good to go. :P

nope, the hardest thing you'll have to do is pick out which book you want, or decide how we'll decide what book you want!

These kinds of books are excellent candidates for Interlibrary Loan requests.

It makes me ill that libraries cull their collections -- making it even more difficult to locate out-of-print volumes.

wss4 - March 2, 2008 06:49 PM (GMT)
You can put me down to host as well Shaunie. I am after all so good at deciding what book to read next. :P

:giggle: I resemble that! That's what polls are for! I've picked out the three I'm interested in submitting to the group, so I'll be putting my own poll up soon, maybe tonight to get us going!

I've actually got a stack of about 6 books on my dresser just of my own, not owed to anyone that I've picked out so I don't have to try and decide what of my own to read next, because I just have too many! So each time I pick one out, I go get a replacement and put it at the bottom of the stack (lately I've been playing a game with myself, I have to alternate between starting a new series and continuing an already started series within a genre). AND I have to choose one of the top three in the stack (location wise) to force myself to read all the different genre's rather than just all one kind!

This in addition to trying to give my owed books precedence! (something along the lines of must read/start 2 owed books before treating self to personal choice of book) so far it's working pretty well, I know sounds like too many rules, but I like playing games with myself that way ;) Doesn't always work, that whole reward system thing, but sometimes.

*slinks away, certain she's given herself completely away as being a freakizoid*

shaunesay - April 27, 2008 05:11 PM (GMT)
Gategypsy is going to be our next hostess, and I think she's going to be posting her poll choices this coming week sometime! :)

so get ready for round 2! I'm excited to see what she chooses!

Also, does anyone want to then volunteer for round three? we'll choose the book for that one probably the first week of July. Let me know if you are interested and if there is more than one we'll choose randomly.

Thanks everyone! I'm glad you all enjoyed our first book!

wss4 - April 27, 2008 07:43 PM (GMT)
I will volunteer for some time this summer. I still have not read 'Ender's Game'. lol

i'm not an orson scott card fan at all, so I was like 'seeyah next time discussion group'

shaunesay - April 27, 2008 11:54 PM (GMT)
ok, I'm glad that everyone that read Ender's Game enjoyed it lol! And I really do plan to put together some sort of index page for us, so we can easily go back and visit past discussions. That way whenever you get to one you can still go back and read and post, even if we're on past that one!

Wss4, sometime this summer would be July, or September, do either of those sound better for you?

Oh I intend to read it as I have the entire series. I just know that once I read Ender's Game I will have to go ahead and read the entire series so I was trying to meet some of my TBR owed commitments first. :giggle:

Shaunie, July would be best as I will be back to work by September. So it looks like I will volunteer for July. :P

shaunesay - April 28, 2008 03:15 AM (GMT)
Alrighty then, July it is! I've marked you down in the list on the first post, so you're committed now! ;)
