Title: Prayers, vibes, good thoughts for my nephew

cheesygiraffe - February 26, 2008 09:25 PM (GMT)
My 14 almost 15 year old nephew was just put in the hospital a little bit ago. He has a staph infection, they tried to treat with some antibiotics for over a week but it didn't help any. :sigh: Can you please send prayers, vibes, good thought or whatever works for you for him? I helped raise him when he was a little guy. So even though he's my husband's nephew, he's like one of mine.
Thanks everyone!

How is he doing Cheesy?

I haven't heard anything today. I need to call up there soon to find out. :erm:

cheesygiraffe - February 27, 2008 03:37 PM (GMT)
It looks like he will be in the hospital 4-5 days. Of course they've got him on strong antibiotics. Plus taking benadryl and they are going to give him a betadine bath later today. I'm sure he'll love that. It's gotten in his blood stream. It was suggested that I not bring up my boys to see him, even though they want to go. Being that staph is very contagious and what kid doesn't have a open sore on them somewhere.

I definitely wouldn't take your boys to see him. Hell, I wouldn't take little ones to the hospital at all. MRSA (the staph infection that is resistant to the antibiotic most used for staph infections) is very prevalent in hospitals. It's also being see more often in the community at large. It's rampant in our area. We've been very lucky though. Martin has had 2 bouts with it, but was able to be treated at home both times (I think the first time, the treatment probably wasn't sufficient). The 2nd time, he had a huge place on his face and it really scared me. He's on prophylactic antibiotics for 6 months after the initial treatment was completed to help prevent it from happening again. The part about it getting in his bloodstream is really scary. Hope everything turns out okay, and I'll keep sending all the healing vibes I can his way.

He got out of the hospital today. And I found out that it wasn't a staph infection after all. The doctor is saying that it was a stress related rash. Yes the poor boy is stressed out because his parents are divorced and they fight over him constantly. One min they both want him and they next min neither of them want him. :sigh:

It's great that he's home now. :bananadance:

It's a shame though they hell he's going through. Divorce is hard enough on the kids involved without the squabbling and nastiness of parents adding to it. I hope this will wake them up and make them put a little more thought into how their actions are affecting their son.

No kidding! In my classes back in the fall, they told us that one MRSA study found that it was present on all hospital KEYBOARDS! Not exactly where you think you'll get it from, and not where you're wearing your latex gloves...... Things like this make me think harder on whether I want to be in the medical field - I can be a germaphobe..... and there's so much that's scary these days...

Glad to hear he is home. Poor kid though. Shame that the kids have to be put in the middle like that. Hope things get resolved.

rannie - March 4, 2008 12:33 AM (GMT)
I'm so glad he's home and so glad he didn't have bacteremia - scary stuff, especially if it's a resistant strain. I hope his folks will remember to give him lots of love and keep him out of the warzone.

needmorezoloft - March 5, 2008 04:49 PM (GMT)
I'm gad he's home and ok. That staff stuff is scary. A family friend died this year from it. My parents went to see him in the hospital, and they had to strip, wash all their clothes first off, take a shower and disinfect everything. Jordan and I had to stay locked in her bedroom when they came home until it was all safe. (The dr.'s told them to do this, and to NOT touch him.)

Because it is/was still in the house Jordan and I didn't get to see his wife or go to his house.

I saw her yesterday when she came to do her taxes, so at least I've got to see her. I'm not sure if it was because of what he had or because of his wishes, but he was creamated. It was kinda werid with no service or anything.

He was ill before he got it.. and he got the infection at the hospital while having treatment for something else. I think he was gone in about a month or two after getting it.

Just scary.

I'm so glad it was only a rash Cheesy!!

Isn't it sad that such young kiddies already suffer from stress?
To be honest I find it shocking but I know he is definitely not the only one and it will probably be very common in about 20 years or so.

Cheesy peesy. How is he now?

I don't know. I hadn't talked to him in about a week. He was doing better last Sat. though.
