Title: Need computer help PLEASE!

CdnBlueRose - February 22, 2008 01:04 AM (GMT)
Hope someone here can help me with this.... I need one of these types of documents: .doc, .htm, .html, .txt. and I can't figure out what program creates which. I'm doing a word processing document - and I have access to Office 2007, but the only info I've found so far tells me that a .doc file refers to a Microsoft Word document from prior to Office 2007...... Can anyone here tell me how to create any of those types of documents? This probably sounds so stupid, but I'm banging my head on the wall here and google searches just aren't pulling up the info I need. Thanks much in advance.

I've always created .doc documents with Microsoft Word, .txt documents with the notepad and .htm or .html with DreamWeaver. I didn't know that there had been a change of extension after Office 2007

I have no idea Rosie. I wish I could help you though.

.doc = Microsoft Word
.htm or .html = HTML file (what you read in your browser)
.txt = text file (notepad or the like)

I just remembered that, if you don't have Dreamweaver, but you have Office, you can install FrontPage and create .htm and .html with it.
You can also ask Word to save your documents as web pages, but we were told not to do that, since the code comes out filled with "trash".
Hope that helps. :erm:

Sorry I just reread and see that you want to create one of these types of documents, and weren't just wondering what they were.

So as was already stated, you can use Microsoft Word to create a .doc file.
A .txt file can be created with Windows Notepad (or another Notepad equivalent)

And HTML files, can also be created with Notepad but they have to have the special tags isn them that make them readable in a brower, so to have a more graphical oriented HTML editor, you'd want something like Front Page or DreamWeaver.

Like Blackie said, you can also output HTML with Microsoft Word, but I wouldn't recommend using it for more than a single page as it does add tons of extra junk which makes editing a huge PITA.

Thanks everyone! I have a Notepad so I'll try to create a .txt file on that..... if it doesn't work, I'll be back to bug y'all some more! ;)

P.S. This is for my resume - one place I'm dealing with wants it uploaded to them in one of those formats.....

Don't you have MS Word? You'll get a much better looking Resume using Word since you can have formatting and stuff, like bolding the Company names, automatically aligning all dates to the right, etc. You can't do that kind of stuff in a text file.

I don't have MS Word.... I found that I can download a free trial version of Office 2007, so I was going to do that, but according to the info I found, it doesn't do .doc files, so there's no point...... maybe I just don't understand.....

Rosie- go to openoffice.org and download Open Office for free. You'll have the entire MS office package (word, excel, powerpoint, access-but they'll have differnt names- "Writer" is Word) , except it doesn't crash and it's free. Open office can save as .doc- just use the pulldown "Save as type" menu when you do a "save as" and pick "MS word 97/2000/XP"

OpenOffice is great.

Okay, first of all, Office 2007 does save DOC files. DOC is specific to MS Word.

However, since you don't have it, I suggest using either the Open Office program that Janet suggested below, or you can also use Google Docs or Zoho Writer, both of which are online apps so nothing to download and install to create Doc files (aka Word files) as well.

(So note that in the menu, if you see Save/Export as Word document, that means the same thing as saving with a .DOC extension.

The thing about Office 2007 though is that the new version has a different file extension. If you create a document using WORD 2007 and save it will all the bells and whistles, it's saved as .docx, which means only a comp with word 2007 can open it. You also have the option to save it in "Word 97-2003 compatibility mode" which gives it a .doc extension. Its not hard, just something to be aware of, if you plan on sharing the document with someone else, who may not have 2007.

ETA: I wouldn't use Google Doc to make a resume as it doesn't always save the formatting correctly when it's imported into Word (like if you want your name centered, or to put the dates you worked at places aligned to the right side or something).

Ah! That explains the little blurb I did find about Office 2007 not using .doc! Thanks fantasy!

Ahhh that's why. Thanks for the explanation! :)

I kinda knew the 2007 format had some additional formatting from earlier versions, but didn't realize the actual extension was different as well, and that it wasn't directly readable with older versions unless specifically told to be. Bad Microsoft! :bash:

Do ya? I didn't bother cuz I'd heard and seen how Mac-like it is now, and how so many things are so different. So I didn't think I'd like it at all.

Unfortunately not working in the corporate world anymore, I no longer have access first-hand to all the technologies I'm not using at home. And I kinda miss that... :sigh: Oh well, will have my booty back in a sling once I get out west.

I dont know how much like a Mac it is, but its definitely different from the old versions. Lots of new features and I do find myself looking for stuff that I know is there but don't know where they've put it in this version. But it's soooo pretty, I can get over all of that.
