I have a reveal -- a book that I only recently read and enjoyed very much. If it isn't to the liking of the winner, she may pick a replacement from my entire Available & TBR lists.

Lizabeth86 - February 20, 2008 01:38 AM (GMT)
I think I am going to ask for Elsi's reveal (I was going to ask before I even saw her recent post :giggle: )

From the back cover:

Risa Sheridan knows everything about gold-its mysteries, its allure, its perils. Her boss, Shane Tannahill-owner of the ultra-successful Las Vegas gambling mecca, the Golden Fleece-is addicted to the stuff. Now an ancient Celtic piece is being offered to Shane for his collection, with the promise of more to come, and the casino owner is hooked. But though she shares Shane's enthusiasm, Risa is wary - because something about this particular artifact is mysterious and troubling, something that says "stay away." It is a voice that should be heeded, because soon people are dying all around them. And whether it's an ancient curse that has taken hold or their lives or the simple, murderous greed of unscrupulous adversaries, there is suddenly no place in the surreal, blinding glitter of Vegas for Risa and Shane to hide...

My reveal is: "The Shipping News" by E. Annie Proulx

He is the definitive loser. The big "L". He's timid, an underachiever, drifts from job to job, and even lacks in the looks department. He seems to ache for love and let's his cheating wife walk all over him. He's Quoyle. No first name, just Quoyle. What Quoyle does have, is two little girls, who love him and a big heart that is tied up in knots and needs to be untangled.

When the wife is lost in an auto accident, Quoyle is on his own to try to rebuild his life, and care for his daughters. Drowning in his own misery, his domineering Aunt takes charge and whisks them all off to the home of the Quoyle's, a rugged little fishing town in Newfoundland. The town is one where everbody knows everybody and they all have tales of yore to tell. After Quoyle lands a job with the local newspaper, he soon becomes part of the big family of friends and neighbors, and learns to love again. The town has quite a few local characters that add quite a bit of humor and history to the story.

Proulx gives marvelous descriptions of the area and makes it very easy to visualize the surroundings. Each chapter opens with a brief introduction, usually of some intricate knot used by sailors and fisherman(most often from "The Ashley Book of Knots"), which seem to hold some life secrets and, parallels the life changing events Quoyle is going through. As the story unfolds, we can see the gradual progress of Quoyle's big heart opening up to love, and becoming the man he has inside of him.

The Eyre Affair (Thursday Next)
by Jasper Fforde

Pirouetting on the boundaries between sci-fi, the crime thriller and intertextual whimsy, Jasper Fforde's outrageous The Eyre Affairputs you on the wrong footing even on its dedication page, which proudly announces that the book conforms to Crimean War economy standard.
Fforde's heroine, Thursday Next, lives in a world where time and reality are endlessly mutable--someone has ensured that the Crimean War never ended for example--a world policed by men like her disgraced father, whose name has been edited out of existence. She herself polices text--against men like the Moriarty-like Acheron Styx, whose current scam is to hold the minor characters of Dickens' novels to ransom, entering the manuscript and abducting them for execution and extinction one by one. When that caper goes sour, Styx moves on to the nation's most beloved novel--an oddly truncated version of Jane Eyre--and kidnaps its heroine. The phlegmatic and resourceful Thursday pursues Acheron across the border into a Leninist Wales and further to Mr Rochester's Thornfield Hall, where both books find their climax on the roof amid flames.

Fforde is endlessly inventive: his heroine's utter unconcern about the strangeness of the world she inhabits keeps the reader perpetually double-taking as minor certainties of history, literature and cuisine go soggy in the corner of our eye. The audacity of the premise and its working out provides sudden leaps of understanding, many of them accompanied by wild fits of the giggles. This is a peculiarly promising first novel. --Roz Kaveney

French Kiss by Beth Roberts

This is the novelisation of the movie starring Meg Ryan (Kate) and Kevin Kline (Luc). Kate hates flying, but her husband to be is in Paris with another woman, and she's determined to win him back. On the flight to Paris, she is seated next to an obnoxious French criminal named Luc. Kate's introduction to Paris is a disaster. Luc pretends to be a gentleman, but he's really out to recover some stolen jewels. The results border on farce as Kate tries to win back her man and Luc his loot.
