Title: Bookring Question
Description: What would you do???

redhot-brat - February 18, 2008 09:07 PM (GMT)
I am having a bit of a probelm with a bookring I joined. I received the book back in October. I read it , journaled it, and then contacted the next in line for their address. After 5 PM's and 3 weeks later, they finally got back to me to say they'd bought a copy, please skip them.
I then contacted both the books owner (to update her) and the next in line for their address. The owner got right back to me and said thanks for the update. The next in line however took 5-6 pm's and still no answer. I even tried the email they provided , (twice) cause they have had probs with BX-ing PM's in the past.
I contacted the books owner again and she said to just skip them and move onto the next person.
I then tried to contact that person and again after 5-6 pm's still no answer. There is no one else after them, accept the books owner. I sent her another note letting her know that none of the other people waiting are answering my pm's and perhaps they are not getting them. Even though she seems to get them okay, BX-ing PM's are sometimes weird like that.
I asked if she could please try contacting them and see if by chance that is the probelm, or should I just go ahead and send the book back to her? It has now by 3 weeks, and I have sent a 2nd copy of that PM to the books owner. I have STILL not heard back from her, or any of the 3 players between her and I.
I've had this book for 5 months now, I have no addresses for any of the above people, and really don't know what to do. Do I continue to just hang onto the book and hope one of them eventually contacts me? Do I ask around for the owners addy and send it back to her and let her figure it out? Do I keep repeatedly PM-ing all of the above until somebody answers me?
Any suggestions??? I've never had anything like this happen before, so I'm at a loss here. I've done everything I can think of to handle this book correctly. Now I'm just confused.

Kyri is in the same position as you with the Christine Feehan books that belong to taniazed in Australia.

In any case, I wouldn't worry about continuing to try to contact the other participants, you've did your part. However, you do want to return the book to it's owner, right? Have you read through the profile on her BC page? Often they'll leave info there about what's going on and possibly even an address. An ISO post in the bookring forum might turn up her or someone who has her address.

Edited, as it seems Cherie and I posted similar things within seconds of one another,

I have checked her profile for any details there, but according to it, all is as normal. I just tried one last time to contaxt her before I go into the ISO post mess. I do, of course, wish to return her book.

I'm trying to do the right thing with this, but just at this point am at a loss of how exactly to do that. Thanks for the suggestions Cherie & Gotham.

Yes what they said - it's difficult isn't it cos you don't want to keep hassling someone but  you need to get the book out! Hope you get it sorted sugarplum :)

Is this the owner, looking for you in BC forums?

A similar thing is happening with me right now. However, I've quit trying after 3 pms. This bookring was stalled with spaceystacey for over three years (since July of 2004!) and the other participants and the book owner aren't still active at bookcrossing. I may try an ISO in the forums, but really, I'm not too worried about it at all.

Deb, I know you have a Yahoo email address and as I know a lot of people who've had trouble getting journal entries in email too, also have Yahoo!

FYI, about a year back or so, Yahoo instituted a policy which they believe would help combat spam. When a mail message comes into their server for a user, the system will intitially decline that message. And yes, according to them, this is to help stop spam because a valid email message, the server it's waiting at will automatically try again. Now that's usually the case, but that combined with their overzealousness in marking things as spam as it is, I simply don't trust that I will actually receive all my mail through my own Yahoo account, especially if Goddess forbid it's not nitiated from one of the top 3 mail providers who's mail server is tweaked to handle Yahoo's eccentricies.

In any case, whenever people say they're not getting messages, or they're having problems getting stuff from BookCrossing, 75% of the time they're using Yahoo. Just thought you might wanna know that.

PS - Do remember to check out Megi's link above as it sounds like this may be very likely what's happening to you.

You're very diligent. :)
I send one PM and leave it a week, if I don't hear back then I put an ISO message in the forums and a message as a journal entry (so if they are keeping track of the book they might see it) - I'd probably leave it a couple of weeks. Then I think I'd probably keep the book a couple of months just in case.

Yep - The ISO for me in the BX-ing forums was for this book. I'm not sure why she didn't just use my email, it's right on my BX-ing profile page. I keep it there for the rare times I have had issues with the PM system over there.

Genearally I don't have issues and I haven't had any at all since I added Bookcrossing to my approved email list. I've been checking my bulk box just incase, but nothing there either.

I did reply to her ISO post with my email, so hopefully we can get things squared away soon. Thanks for all the help and suggestions everybody.
