Title: Bookbox for my birthday?
Description: Thought i'd see for the interest
lexilewords - February 9, 2008 06:19 PM (GMT)
Hey guys, my 24th birthday is coming up (okay two months away but still) and I'd thought it would be nice if I could do a bookbox for my birthday. Filled with my 3 favorite genres--regency/historical romance, paranormal and fantasy--for a total of 24 books (so original I know!).
I wanted to post here first since I've more or less talked/swapped/seen around you guys more then the wider group of people over at BookCrossing (some of whom seem offended that I would RABCK books, or swap/trade/send books thatI haven't registered...honestly my whole thing is that if I haven't read the book, which is the case for some Exchanges/VBB's, then I'm not going to register it. Its not mine to register after all IMO).
ANYHOW! I wanted to limit this to 6-8 people and I'm going to limit this to US only (it can be very expensive to send 24 books overseas to arrive and be sent back within a reasonable amount of time, believe me I've done it).
As fantasy pointed out a few posts down: I enjoy Regency Romances, this is the romance books that are set during the Regency Period of British history but do not contain sexual content beyond second base in detail (ie: they kiss and get into a passionate embrace but the scene fades to black). Georgette Heyer and Barbara Cartland are good classic examples of this. I also enjoy Historical Romances set during that time, the difference being 'Historical Romances' don't just fade to black they continue the scene till however the passionate embrace ends. Julia Quinn, Sabrina Jefferies and Lisa Kleypas are examples of 'Historical' Romance.
If anyone has a question beyond that I am sure I can come up with better examples and a more varied list.
Any interest?
I hope to have the finalized list done by February 29th and the box out no later then the 7th of March. The books do not just have to fit the romance category for paranormal and fantasy, and Young Adult is more then acceptable.

I've never done a real physical bookbox before. It sounds fun. :)

I have! I've only done one and it was last year. But I got a few good books out of it.
Lexie, what do you mean by regency romance? I've never been able to figure out the difference between regency and historical (if there is one).

Historicals can be set in any time period, including the regency period and generally have sex. Regencies are set during the Regency period of England and generally don't have sex. At most, they'll end with a kiss or something. Real regencies are getting harder to find as most publishers dont print them anymore. I think Zebra might still, but they might be the only ones.

Ah. Well in that case, I don't have any of those. I have Lisa Kleypas, Liz Carlyle, Julia Quinn types. And they all have sex in them.
Thanks for clearing that up for me! :)

It's entirely possible that Lexie really means she likes Historicals. A lot of people aren't clear on the difference. We'll have to wait until she checks back in to see which she means.

fan--thanks for clearing it up :) I actually enjoy both--my first romances were regencies by Barbara Cartland, Sandra Heath and Georgette Heyer. I'm reading Historicals now mostly b/c the publishers did stop producing actual regencies (in all honesty alot of the latter books from signet and zebra, right before they ended that category, were little better then Historicals in regards to sexual content), but I enjoy that time period so very much that I tend to just skim over the passages that involve sex.
Cee--I read all 3 of those authors you listed (I adored Quinn's Bridgerton Saga and enjoyed most of the Wallflower Quartet by Kleypas).

I need to check around and see what I have... when are you hoping to have a finalized list of participants?
As far as paranormal and fantasy, do you mean romances there too? Or just P/F in general? And would YA be acceptable?
I have a lot of questions, I know. I just don't want to join a box and realize I don't have anything to put in that others would enjoy.

I want to have a finalized list by the 29th of the month--and as far as your other questions, it doesn't just have to be romance and YA is more then fine (i find myself reading alot of YA Paranormals lately...). I'm going to edit my first post to reflect the answers to your questions so everyone else is clearer.
