Title: Sharing my TBRs

catsalive - February 7, 2008 03:00 AM (GMT)
Everyone is sharing their books around so I thought I'd steal krin511's idea & do it too. It's nice to be able to stick a title on my next TBR.

Check out my TBRs (& AVLs too if you like), make a few choices, & I'll pick one out each month or so to send to a BC/BO friend.

ETA - I think I'll do it on the 15th of each month.

 So many good books that you've already passed along! I wish there was some way to make it so we were only looking at books that are currently in your possession.

Anyways, you've got amazing taste in books. I enjoyed reading the list, even if so many were already with someone else.

TBRs I'd be interested in:
The Lemon Table (Julian Barnes)
Five Quarters of the Orange (Joanne Harris)
Republic of Women (Merrill Findlay)

AVLs I would love (and would be willing to trade for seperately from your giveaway offer!)
The Bondmaid (Pearl S. Buck)

And a special request...
Good Wives (Louisa M. Alcott) <-- if this is the part where Amy goes to Paris and Jo moves to New York and meets Mr. Behr, I would like to beg a favour. I sent a copy of Little Women out into the world not realizing it was only half the story that I knew so well, and it ended up with wiccania ( http://bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/wiccania ) who REALLY wants to know how it ends... would you be willing to RABCK it to her, or send it to her in trade for something on my shelf, or let me pay the shipping somehow... because I feel so horrible that she only got the story up 'til Christmastime when their father comes home from the war!

Errr... for someone who hasn't read any regencies (that I know of), can you suggest some of the best? And how do I recognize such books?

Errr... for someone who hasn't read any regencies (that I know of), can you suggest some of the best? And how do I recognize such books?

oh elsi! this is gonna be a long response!

First to clarify here: Regencies are Historical romance novels set in a time from about 1811-1820 (some regencies are set as early as 1805 that I've read, but much of the time this is the backstory to the actual novel or its part of a larger Dynasty of Characters, like Julia Quinn's Bridgerton Family), in deference to the fact that the Prince Regent reigned during this period of British History and dictated many of the fashions and societal customs. Other notables usually mentioned in the stories in some form are Wellington, Napoleon, the Patronesses of Almack's, Lady Jersey and Beau Brummell.

True Regency Romances had almost no sexual situations--some heavy kissing, but either the lady would draw back, the gentleman would remember himself or the scene cut to black. In recent years, after the decline in sales and the big Houses (Signet and Zebra) shut down their exclusively Regency Romance lines, authors have been writing 'Historical Novels' set in the Regency period. Very few actual Regencies make their ways onto the shelves these days, unless they are reprints of older material (Alot of Georgette Heyer and Betty Neels has come out). These newer Historicals often feature sexual situations--mainly between the Hero/Heroine, sometimes between secondary romantic couples and occasionally between the Hero/Mistress.

When looking for the books look at the spine--almost all Romance Publishing Houses I know of label what period the book is set in. If it merely says 'Historical' then see if the date is listed somewhere inside--usually at the beginning of the first chapter.

I can suggest some of the regencies I enjoy quite a bit--as far as best, it seems that classics are the best to recommend. Georgette Heyer is of course the favorite--she has a number that are out right now in reprinted form from Harlequin and Signet. Wiki Entry To date I've only read 5 Heyer's, but as she was my first taste of the period I am continually seeking out more of hers (if you notice I tend to follow Cats around in the VBB and snatch her books :giggle: ). Barbara Cartland also has an extensive collection of Regencies, though they might be a little harder to find new since they're not being reprinted like Heyer's. Most used bookstores should have hers (if they have romance books--the two I go to the most have a large selection of Romances and at least two shelves dedicated to each author).

Newer authors I enjoy are Cindy Holbrook (her books tend to have a funny edge to them, 'The Wedding Ghost' from Zebra is funny), Donna Simpson ('Miss Truelove Beckons'), Sandra Heath ('Haunting of Henrietta'), Barbara Hazard ('The Scent of Lilacs'), and Shirley Kennedy ('The Rebellious Twin'). At least those are the ones I can name off the top of my head. My list is extensively long...

Historical Romances I enjoy in that period...I enjoyed Julia Quinn's Bridgerton Family Series (which ranges from 1805 to 1827 over the 8 books that chronicled the love lives of all 8 Bridgerton children...not necessarily in sequential order though), Sabrina Jefferies, Celeste Bradley and Julia London.

If you'd like a more complete list of my favorites then feel free to pm me, I can give better synopsises when I'm not bogged down by tiredness :D
