lmn60 - February 5, 2008 10:14 PM (GMT)
Would my fellow Indecisives mind posting some information about their favourite genres, authors, etc here? Or would you rather we posted it directly to you, cheesy?

I've had a skim of the wishlists and know that some of the books listed will be almost impossible to source here in Australia, even with the assistance of bookmooch on occasion!?!

I'd like to find something that I hope the other reader will at least enjoy, even if it's not on their specific wishlist.

Just in case any of the rest of you have similar issues - here's my genre list:

I like 'quality' literature; 'cosy' mysteries and thrillers(definitely no sick shit); science fiction that isn't 'hard' and fantasy that isn't 'high'; biographies and autobiographies; and historical fiction. I'm not a big fan of chick lit, horror (I'm a wimp) or romances!

Looking forward to this round of the exchange!!!

Cheers

Lynn

cheesygiraffe - February 6, 2008 12:01 AM (GMT)
How about we post favorite genres so if we can't find a wish list book then we can at least hope to find something they might like.

lexilewords - February 6, 2008 03:38 AM (GMT)
Well that's easy enough for me...

Genres (with favorite authors)

Paranormal Romance (Katie MacAlister, Charlaine Harris, Lynsay Sands, P.C. Cast, Rosemary Laurey, Michelle Rowen, Annette Blair, Gena Showalter)
Historical Romance (Georgette Heyer, Brenda Joyce, Sabrina Jefferies, Celeste Bradley)
Fantasy (Mercedes Lackey, Isobelle Carmody, Joel Rosenberg, Ilona Andrews, Maria V. Snyder, Anne McCaffrey, Hilari Bell, Shannon Hale, Sharon Shinn)
Ancient Egypt (Academic, Mythology, Fiction)

Sometime hopefully in the next month I will be posting my current book list (as in what I own etc etc), so that will hopefully give everyone a better idea of what I like (since I say I like Fantasy--but I'm very particular. Or Paranormal Romance is a better example).

If all else fails ignore my Amazon list for my Cliff's list. My Amazon list is crazy long and includes alot of books that I am interested in, but is insanely long. My Cliff's are the books that I am in desperate wanting of and want the most.

Lexie

redhot-brat - February 6, 2008 04:44 AM (GMT)
:giggle: I still have the same month I had before.

Interests for me .........
Anything involving the paranormal - fiction or non-fiction (ghosts, vamps, weres, unexplained mysteries, witches, ESP, psychic phenomena, etc)
horror (sick shit is good too)
mystery & thriller (sick shit is good here too)
romantic suspense (like Iris Johansen, Heather Graham, Tami Hoag ~NOT regular romance)
True Crime
most things consider new wave or alternative (pagan, wiccan, astrology, dreams, herbalist, reiki, meditation, etc etc)
Some chick lit (look at my tbr for ideas)
erotica (soft or hard, gay, bi, anything in between is fine)
Photography
Nature

NON-Interests for me........
Romance
Most chick lit
most biographies & memoirs
most sci-fi & fantasy
most history

I say most on these as there are some exceptions .... most of those will be noted on my wishlist. My wishlist is pretty big and pretty diverse and I'm always open to try a new author. :D

Too late! I already packed up the latest Danielle Steele for you!!!

Xeyra - February 6, 2008 10:04 AM (GMT)
Okay, my preferences when it comes to genres/books.

FANTASY
It's probably my favorite genre. High, low, urban, whathaveyou, I am very fond of this genre and have a lot that I haven't read so if you don't catch it on my bookshelf, you're probably okay with sending me pretty much anything you might think I'd like in this genre. :)

HUMOR
Humorous books and authors are a-okay with me. I love Christopher Moore and Terry Pratchett but I'd love to know even more authors in the genre.

SCIENCE FICTION
Probably not the hard hard SF, or the really old ones, but everything else is game.

FICTION
Most fiction literature is a good choice with me. I don't have any particular genres in fiction I like the most. Pretty much anything you may have read that you liked is good for me. I always try to read a bit of everything and I'm always willing and eager to find new authors.

I'm not very fond of romances, historical or not, though I don't mind romance in a book. I just don't like that particular genre since I stopped reading Harlequins after my adolescent years. :P

True Crime or sick shit (is that the name?) may be an option but I'm not very familiar with the genre and it's not at the top of my interests.

I'm fond of chick-lit but it's not a genre I like to read in great quantities because otherwise I'll get saturated with all the thirty-something women trying to find themselves a man.

NON-FICTION
This can be a good alternative to everything else. I'm mainly fond of memoirs and autobiographies (semi or not).

TEEN
I'm developing a fondness for teen literature lately. Lots of youthful classics I never got to read during my teenaged years because they were never translated in my country.

That'll teach him to be contrary...

cheesygiraffe - February 6, 2008 03:50 PM (GMT)
Favorite Genres:

Paranormal - as long as there isn't too much romance.

Mystery - I love all kinds of mystery from cozy to sick shit. I've been reading a lot of cozy lately though.

Fantasy - Terry Pratchett and some of the paranormal borders on fantasy.

General Fiction - Jodi Picoult and other female authors similar

Nonfiction - humorous like Laurie Notaro, events like what Jon Krakauer writes about

Amish - fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, ect.

I don't like westerns, Celebrity autobiographies/biographies, Chick Lit, contemporary romance

Paranormals? :giggle:

Yeah....but it doesn't leave everyone much choice to choose from :giggle:

I think the best thing is to check my wishlist and search my bookshelf to see if I have read or have the book people would like to send.

I register everything and have a nice long wishlist so I think that is the best way :P

geishabird - February 8, 2008 04:13 AM (GMT)
I also have a very long wish list which I think will be easy for people...many of the books are older and well-known so they would be more easily available.

I can't really say that I prefer this genre or that one because I don't so much read genres as I do certain authors within genres. (I hate the word "genre" anyway...I would like to see bookstores just classify ALL fiction as one category. But I digress... )

But I can tell you what to stay away from:

Romance/chicklit/those mysteries with recipes and their ilk/slasher-horror-thriller type thingies/any book that they sell at the supermarket/paranormal-vampire-elf-zombie romances/sleazy true crime stuff/did I mention romance & chicklit? :giggle:

Honest, my wish list is a mile long...you'll be okay.

geishabird - February 9, 2008 01:21 AM (GMT)
Okay...today I received a package postmarked Windsor (Ontario) and labelled "Your Indecisive Book!" I started to open it, thinking it was just another late arrival from November...but then I thought, wait: except for the AWOL butterfly-noir, I've received all my packages, haven't I? So, is this an early April arrival?

Fess up or I'm opening it! :P
