Title: Please help me what to read next?

Marlene - February 3, 2008 09:46 AM (GMT)
Hi. This is what I wrote yesterday in the What are you reading thread.

Right now I am in the mood for books that draw me in. Books like The Guardian The Pilot's Wife, The Lovely Bones.
Not sure if I have anything like that on my TBR shelf.

Sometimes you don't even know you have gems on your tbr pile for years.
I remember when I picked up Angry girls eating Bonbons by Lorna Landvik. it had been on my shelf catching dust for a year, same with the Guardian and boy did I enjoy those books.

so more of Literature/Fiction genre

Maybe I should start a poll? or ask you guys to check my tbr shelf?
It is just 5 pages.

Books TBR in my possession

Sejent replied, she had looked at my shelf and came up with books I even forgot I had.

so I am going to make a poll and will also add an option, other.. please check my TBR shelf. I am trying to add books other people loved.

Hope you will help me out.
You can vote 3 times and I am looking for a great book.

I voted for Fried Green Tomatoes. Now mind you, I've never read the book but the movie is one of my all-time favorite movies. The movie definitely "draws you in" so I am thinking the book has got to be awesome since usually movies aren't as good as the books (with some exceptions)

I did try to read a few pages and had trouble . let me find it, so I remember why I had trouble getting in to it.
Yes I did read about 30 pages.

and you are welcome to suggest other books I have on my tbr shelf.

I voted for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil it's a true crime story (and I know how you love those) and it's set in Savannah, Georgia (about 2 hours from me). There are some real 'characters' in the book and I think it will certainly hold your attention. It's a great story with some really kooky happenings. Loved it!!!

My second choice would be Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. It's a great book, but there's alot left unsaid. You really have to read between the lines to 'get' it. That being said, it might be better for another time. The movie was filmed in Juliette, Georgia (about an hour from me).

It's weird that both these books have ties to places close by.

I think I'm partial to books with a 'Southern' theme.

Eta. if you vote for a book can you please tell me why? :)

Same! (except the part about being 2 hours away!)

My second would have been Cat's Eye (although I haven't read it) but Margaret Atwood is one of my favorites!

Marlene - February 3, 2008 01:34 PM (GMT)
Thank you. Really appreciate the explanation.
It seems you can only vote for 1 book. :erm:

giz-angel - February 3, 2008 01:49 PM (GMT)
I voted for Cat's Eye because it's the only one I have read and I love Atwood.

Front Street - February 3, 2008 02:53 PM (GMT)
Fried Green Tomatoes is a wonderful book you can lose yourself in. The characters will stay with you long after you close the book too. It will take you thru a total roller coaster of emotions too- funny as can be and you will cry our eyes out. Sorry- I think used every cliche possible here! But it is a once of a kind novel. I am jealous- I wish I could read it for the first time all over again.
My second choice would be Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil for the same reasons meshe stated.

I voted for this one too because I loved it when I read it some years ago. I recommend it, Marlene.

I voted for Cat's Eye because I love Atwood and have Cat's Eye sitting on my shelf.

My second choice would be Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which I read a few years ago and really enjoyed. The main reason I put it second is that, while I enjoyed it, it's gotten mixed reviews from other readers.

CdnBlueRose - February 3, 2008 05:20 PM (GMT)
I voted for Cane River - I loved it and it certainly drew me in! It was one I didn't want to put down and I didn't want it to end! :)

Ri - February 3, 2008 05:45 PM (GMT)
I finally settled on The Joy Luck Club because it is such a rich story (much along the lines of Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons in some ways). I am a big Amy Tan fan anyway.

My second picks were Cat's Eye (loved it!!), Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (I think you would love it!) and Jewel (has some very interesting characters!).

You have lots of great choices!

nwpassage - February 3, 2008 07:07 PM (GMT)
I voted for The Bestseller by Olivia Goldsmith. I really loved it when I read it years ago, and it's one of the few books I actually reread bits and pieces of from time to time. :)

It's really too bad Olivia Goldsmith had to go and die in a freak plastic surgery accident... I miss her books!

Marlene - February 3, 2008 07:56 PM (GMT)
Wow. If I read all this it seems I've had some great books on my shelves catching dust for years. :o :bananadance:

The explanation from Front street does sell the book. wow. I wish i could write like that. reviews and such. :)

So far it seems Cat's Eye, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Migdnight in the Garden of Good and Evil seem to be the front runner.

But reading the posts about The Joy Luck Club, The Bestseller and Cane River I wish I was able to read 3 books at once. :P

Holly. I did not know she died?
Because of plastic surgery? :o
Nw= Holly right? Or am I wrong and mixing you up

Eta: I see I forgot Interview with a vampire. It has 3 votes

Kyrissaean - February 3, 2008 11:28 PM (GMT)
I voted for The Joy Luck Club. It was a really neat book. The stories the characters tell about life in China were my favorite parts -- the imagery is so rich it was almost like watching a movie! And it's told in such a way that you get a feeling for both the area and the people.

At first I was hesitant to try Amy Tan, mostly because I thought of her as a bestseller because her books were picked by bookclubs ("Oh no -- not another Oprah book!" :P ) but after I read this I immediately joined a bookring for The Hundred Secret Senses.

I loved Fried green tomatoes! I voted for that!

I voted for this because I thought it was a great read.

I voted for
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
because I think you'd really like that one

These ones are also good:
Interview with a Vampire
Joy Luck Club

I didn't care for Cat's Eye - definitely my least favorite Atwood so far

Gothamgal - February 4, 2008 03:25 PM (GMT)
I voted for Fried Green Tomatoes, it's a cute book.

Plus, I bought it for my Grandmama while I was in California and she just told me she's reading it now.

If it's good enough for Grandmama

Cry to Heaven was fantabulous. One of my favorite books fo all time. (Hihi Marleenie! )

Fried Green Tomatoes was good, but I have to say I liked the movie better. That movie is probably in my top ten all time faves (which is saying a lot).

Loved loved loved Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Very Southern, and as someone else already commented the character development was superb. I was sad that movie did not at all live up to my expectations.

So, you see, I couldn't vote for just one.

I have an entry for Jewel on BC, here's the link if you want to check it out.
